Small roofing repair
Description of Work: He contacted me the same day Angie’s list sent notice. He was able to come down that day and give an estimate. He mentioned he could complete the work the next week. He was able to come to fix the roof on Friday that next week. My only slight issue was the lack of communication. For example, I asked when he would come to fix the roof and he replied by the end of the week. No defined time or date. I just happened to be at home when he arrived. Other than that, I was worried he may not show. Also. I needed an invoice and that wasn’t submitted. At the end- the work via pictures shown was excellent.

See above - Job went great
Description of Work: High Tops did a great job taking down my old roof, repaired the wood underneath due to weather damage, and then put on a new roof. The work was done on an enclosed porch that was three stories high with tough access. They did the job effeciently and on time and Dan was a pleasure to work with. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM!

Don't bother calling.
Description of Work: I read the reports of unresponsiveness - should have paid attention. They came out and looked at the roof. Said they would make some measurements and provide quote. Imagine my surprise when he gets in his vehicle and drives away. I guess business must be so good that they don't need mine. Estimates are coming in at about $10k.

Response from High Tops Roofing
I usually provide estimates on the upon meeting the client and assessing the work needed. The estimate is customized and printed out in the clients driveway. sometimes I have problems with software/hardware and it is not possible to provide an estimate on the spot. This was one of those occasions. the estimate was supposed to be mailed out to the customer but apparently it never made it off my desk. Next year I will have a back up computer and printer to avoid this problem. sorry Member

Ist sub contractor that Dan the owner hired - put the concrete siding on upside downon north side of house. Had to all be removed-and was no longer useable because it cracks when taken down. Needed more material and cost additional money. 2nd sub contractor no showed. 3rd contractor arrived- took more than 10 weeks to complete the job. We had a new baby and I was home with both of my children - the sub contractor would knock on the window and tell me to make him some coffee. They put the shingle siding inline and did not stagger on the front of the house- if want it done right we need to hire it out again. The subcontractor came back wanting thousands more than the agreed upon price once the work was done. We paid High Tops Roofing - Dan Finnegan the agreed upon amount in full and the subcontractor would not accept payment from Dan - he wanted more money. Dan Finnegan and High Tops Roofing kept our 5,000 dollars and has refused to return it even though the subcontractor recieved payout from the lien on our property and Dan is no longer responsible to pay him. Dan was rarely here to check on the job and was not able to work well with us or his sub contractors.

Response from High Tops Roofing
The homeowner put an addition on his home and acted as his own general contractor to save money and have more control over his job. The homeowner was an acquaintance from school and because of this I gave him very good pricing. The homeowner hired is to do roofing, fiber cement siding, ,fiber cement soffit, fiber cement fascia, and seamless aluminum gutters on his home. The total cost for the non roofing items was around $5900 for labor only (this was very cheap for the size of his home). Generaling was not the home owners specialty and his Lack of experience showed. The problems were evident before we got there. The roof went without a hitch because it was a full service job for us (we were hired to order material and install it). The only issue with the roof was it was delayed by the homeowner because the homeowners carpenter either walked off the job or was fired for not doing quality work. Not coincidently the carpenter was hired on the cheap but was expected to do perfect work. The problems for us arose with the siding. The homeowner decided to order the material himself to save money and asked that I quote only labor based on his measurements. I told him that it was unlikely that his measurements were correct but he was adamant about the square footage. My guys went out there to double check measurements and they figured that the job was about 30% short. I informed the homeowner about this again and let him know that if the job goes over he would be responsible for the added material and labor. The homeowner verbally agreed. We were delayed with the start of the siding job to the customer’s dismay but it wasn’t holding up any other trades and it was partially because we had to start another job before theirs due to his roof delay. I still kept in contact with the owner about our delays and when we were getting started. We finally started the job and the first of many problems we encountered was with the trim. The homeowner ordered ¾” thick trim instead of 5/4” thick. This trim was ½” too thin which made it level with the siding. It not only looked bad but it made it impossible to get a clean bead of caulk where the siding met the trim. This was because the siding was level with the trim at the point where the 2 pieces of siding overlap leaving nothing for the caulk to adhere to. The homeowner is a perfectionist and was very unhappy about it. I told him that my guys did their best with the materials he ordered and it was impossible to get a clean bead under the circumstances. Our next issue occurred when the homeowner informed us he ordered pre-fabricated gable kits. The kits were fabricated to match up with the pitch of the roof. 2 major problems arose in that the kits were not on the plans and the original carpenter did not install the roof pitch correctly. The kits were labor intensive to install if everything had been perfect but the inaccurate pitch required us to re-fabricate the kits to the pitch made by the carpenter. Other walls were not straight too and this led to more work for my men and a less perfect looking project. The final issue we had was with the shortage of siding. We needed about 30% more. The homeowner reluctantly purchased it and we were able to finish the job. When I asked that the homeowner to pay more for the job he told me that too much siding had been wasted, that I should have installed plywood behind the trim to make it stick out further, and that he was not going to pay for the gable work because he wasn’t happy with the siding on the front of the house. I told him that the total cost of the contract is less then I owe my crew for labor. I told him to work it out with my guys and that I don’t need to get paid anything. I also informed him that I am willing to work for free but I am not going to come out of pocket because I was not responsible for many of the issues. He told me to get a lien waver and he would pay me for the original contract. I did this and I subsequently tried to settle with my guys. They rejected the check and chose to put a mechanics lein on the home instead. Mechanics liens are notices that the homeowner may be sued for up to 2 years after the date they are filed. they are invalid after 2 years. A little over 2 years later I got a call from the homeowner claiming that the mortgage company paid off the contractor without their knowledge. She then asked for their money back. I knew that if there was legal proceedings happ4ened in the last 2 years I would have been called by an attorney or the homeowner. I was also pretty sure that mortgage companies do not pay off contractors without consent of the homeowner. To complicate everything the crew that did this job owes me money for not completing a job previous to the homeowners and not repairing a job after the fall out from this job. I have doubts that this story is valid and I will make an open request to the homeowner to come up with valid paperwork that the sub-contractors were paid. If they can come up proof I will settle with them less the money I am owed by my subs. If not then they got a very good deal. $5900 is about ½ the price it should have cost to complete their project.

He responded, came out, and gave us a quote. He was very professional. We didn't use him because we liked the suggestions of another roofer. There was nothing wrong with what he did, but he seemed to offer another alternative for fixing the roof.

The roof was 23 years old and I had developed leaks. I also knew the wood under the shingles were bad since my neighbor told me and several roofers who looked at the rook also commented in their quotes. I called many roofers but felt comfortable with High Tops. I dealt with Dan Finnegan who was very professional, he answered all my questions. The crew was very nice, did a great job and cleaned up well. The new roof looks great, no more leaks and I'm happy. I would definitely recommend High Tops.

Great crew, great work and great cleanup. Double-layer tear off went quickly, no nails or debris left behind. Price was about right for the size of our house. Crew did a nice job repairing mistakes (neglect) of previous roofers (twenty years ago or so). Daniel was prompt and courteous in answering questions and keeping us abreast of scheduling changes due to weather. I would definitely hire them again for any siding or roofing repairs.
