I am very satisfied with the overall experience although I felt that the price seemed slightly high for the product plus labor. I had another plumber replace my leaking water heater on the same day for half the cost of installing back-up sump pump but the labor there was much more intensive (cutting and re-joining gas and water pipes to the water heater, hauling way old water heater etc. vs. cutting and re-joining PVC pipes to the sump pump). This might indicate that the material cost is greater for sump pumps than a new water heater. Having your own plumber install a similar pump bought from Home Depot would cost about half, but I paid a premium as Danny Lux (sales) convinced me why his pump was better quality. Danny was pleasant to deal with, answered my calls promptly, and took the time to explain the process. Greg, the installer, finished his work in approx. 1.5 hours but stayed longer to answer my questions and also took time to give me detailed estimates on other jobs I am considering. He was punctual, professional, and indicated that I can call him anytime if I had more questions. I will certainly use them in future if I can negotiate a good price.
Description of Work: Install back-up sump pump and replace primary sump-pump.

Expensive Mistake. Not only were some parts of the job done poorly and incorrectly, another part done completely differently than quoted and billed, but the owner, Jeff Sloss, refused to remedy the situation in the rudest way I have ever seen a company treat a paying customer. Among other things, they charged me $500 to dig up the exterior of my foundation to thoroughly repair a crack, but instead performed a $100 epoxy injection repair from the inside. No problem with the repair so far, just the bait-and-switch and the cost. I know how much they cost now because I bought two kits myself for $150 total, and repaired a few other cracks. I was also left with a brand-new, too thin, bouncy and squeaking cracked slab for $1500 that cost $3000 to repair, and a flooding back yard. The comments from the company that fixed it for me explain everything: Interior work:The previous contractor had left a high level step and slab in the storage area where a floor was put in place. The high level was a result of insufficient removal of sub slab dirt prior to installing washed stone and what turns out to be a 1.75" thick slab [where 4" was specified and paid for] . I have a picture of the slab removed (along with a tape measure) [showing the 1.75" thickness] ... There was drain tile installed but not at the lower level of the basement tile installed by the same company. (this is not necessarily a problem, but the thin concrete was sure to separate beyond a normal hairline crack) [especially considering that it already bounced and squeaked when walked on] . Remedy:We removed the slab in question, took picture of a lateral angle for thickness, lowered the drain tile, installed drainboard to grade and layed a 10 mil vapor mat followed by a 4" concrete slab. We did so after removing enough dirt below to lower the floor by 4 inches, even after pouring a 2.25" thicker slab. Ejection line, bubble pot.:The distance left by the previous contractor between the home and the bubble pot placement was not in itself a problem. The problem of a large area of standing water was caused by two factors. 1. The bubble pot placement was in a low lying area at the center of the yard. 2. The downspout extension was also left flowing to the same area. Remedy:We were able to tie in the downspout as well as run the bubble pot to an area beyond the negative slope of the yard, therefore eliminating a mud producing/grass thinning, pooling area. I expect to be contacting the same company that corrected Basement Flood Protector's work if I need anything else done that they do, or if anything else goes wrong with BFP's equipment or work. I have no expectation that Basement Flood Protector would stand by anything else any more than they already did, and I could do without the abusive rudeness. If "Basement Flood Protector" is their name and it's all they do, as their commercials say, you'll be as surprised as I was to receive brochures and sales pitches for insulation, attic fans and all kinds of other non-flood protecting products and services. I recommend you avoid those, too, and save the cash and hassle.
Description of Work: I was quoted for a sump pump with battery backup including an ejection line and bubble pot, main basement perimeter excavation and drain tile installation, exterior excavation and crack repair, and a smaller storage room excavation that included new drain tile, a new 4" concrete pad and a small epoxy injection crack repair.

Response from Basement Flood Protector Inc
This is a purposely misleading and malicious review. The member made a crucial mistake in not providing important construction information that affected our work, and consequently wanted us to do a week's worth of rework for free. This was not our fault and the member is now blaming our workers for his mistake. Also, the member's must not understand the quote given to him. It's not confusing, crack repairs are $400-$500 with a lifetime warranty. We've never done crack repairs for $100. His accusations about me personally are out of left field. I was very accommodating and now shocked at his "Jeckyl and Hyde" about-face. Also, BFP does not, and never has, offered ventilation or insulation services. He is apparently confusing us with another company. I will be discussing this review with an attorney to determine if legal action is recommended. I love Angie's List but it should not be allowed to be used in a manner that purposely distorts facts and undeservedly soil a good, hard working company's reputation. The member's review is affecting my highly rated business in a negative manner. We care about every one of our customers and have performed thousands of jobs without this kind of treatment, even when mistakes are legitimately made and corrected. We don't claim to be perfect, but in this situation, our reputation is unfairly being attacked and we won't stand for it. I also hope somebody from AL will be contacting us to discuss.

I called for service on my primary sump pump. I have a back-up but wasn't comfortable depending on it because I couldn't activate it by lifting the float. Dan said they were very busy today due to rains yesterday, but he said he would do his best to fit me in the schedule. Within 10 minutes, he called back and told me that Steve would be here within 2 hours. Steve came and was able to replace a faulty switch and get the pump working again. He also checked my battery back-up pump (still in good shape - watch this green circle - when it turns yellow you need to call) and showed me how to activate it (float must be submerged - push it further into the pit). He also added some insulation to dampen the vibration of the pump discharge pipe to make it quieter. Very pleased!

First and foremost, John Burns (our salesman) was simply outstanding. He struck the perfect balance of offering his knowledge on what he would do and what our budget allowed. We never felt as if he was trying to sell us anything we did not need. If you are looking for a company who knows everything about waterproofing basement with top notch implementation, look no further than Basement Flood Protector. John's knowledge, dedication and professionalism were unparalleled. We have dealt with myriad contractors in the past for different projects who start off great and then hopelessly fade as the project progresses. John was the antithesis of all of those past companies. He promptly answered all questions at all hours of the day. We often felt as if we were his only client! I can't intimate enough how impressed we were. The crew was just as terrific. They were fast, efficient and clean. Mind you, we had quite a bit of work done, including breaking up a portion of our concrete basement floor. When I returned from work, I asked my wife "were they here?" I honestly could not tell. They had to run our bubble drains underground approximately 15 and 20 feet and we could not tell where they had dug up the lawn. They did a fantastic job replacing the grass and not upsetting the surrounding area. At the risk of sounding effusive (probably too late), this experience renewed our faith in contractors. I will recommend them to anyone and will use them again without a doubt.
Description of Work: We hired Basement Flood Protector to do quite a bit of work in anticipation of finishing our basement. They replaced our sump pit with a much larger pit. They replaced our existing sump pump with a more powerful model. They fixed several leaky cracks in the walls of our basement. They installed well covers. They installed two "bubble drains" on two of our downspouts where using regular longer downspouts was not a feasible option.

Basement Flood Protector Inc were very responsive to my initial request for quote and scheduling the appointment. John Sloss was very courteous and helpful in explaining the different services and recommending the best option for my situation. The appointment was scheduled and not only was Roger timely, he was very courteous and the actual install took less time than originally quoted. There was a minor mix up in replacing the original sump pump but John corrected the situation quickly and was very flexible with the reschedule. I judge a company not just by their products and services but also how they react when there is a mistake. The way they handled themselves showed true customer service and I couldn't be happier with the end result.

I found the owner of the company to be a pester. He was constantly leaving voicemail messages on my voicemail, wanting to do the work. I was gathering other estimates. It was just to point where I went to Angie's List and I saw his reviews. There was one review I read about the way he generally is. I felt he was really h****** me as a client. I don't think he got a review as good as another company did. I ended up going with another company because of Angie's List recommendation. I will never recommend him to anybody. His quote was in the same ballpark as other quotes I have gotten. He did call me back right away.

Member, I believe you have the wrong company. I am the owner and I have never spoken to you. If you did speak with any of my employees, and they followed up with you, you would know we are extremely non-aggressive and will not pursue work if the homeowner says "no". In fact, we are one of the only companies in this business that will not do all the typical arm twisting and "used car salesman" technics. People commonly will say how refreshing this is. On the other hand, if a homeowner return calls or doesn't say no, then we will certainly be diligent about offering our best-in-the-industry products and services to them. I hope your next experience is better, whoever the company might be. Thanks! Jeff. www.floodnot.com home of the iControl... The only INTERNET CONNECTED sump pump equipment.

After a terrible experience at my other home with a different company, I called Basement Flood Protector to clean up the other company's mess. They were terrific - prompt, professional and knowledgeable. They determined right away what the other company did wrong and installed a new pump and backup system. I never had a problem again. Its now 3 years later and I just moved, and had water as a result of the July rainstorm. I called John at Basement Flood Protector and he was able to come out right away and install a new pump and back-up system. I have supreme confidence in this company.

I called the company in June and asked to have someone come out and figure out why I was getting water in my basement during heavy rainstorms. They were able to schedule an appointment within a week and their representative, John Burns, was prompt in his arrival for the scheduled appointment. John was friendly and courteous. I explained to John that in the last five years I had only had water in the basement twice, both during severe rains. I had photographs and video of the most recent incident to assit John in understanding exactly what the problem was. John watched only 30 seconds or so of the video (not seeing all areas of the basement affected) and stated that he did not need to look at the photographs. John proceeded to inform me, at the kitchen table, that the problem was water seepage from the ground and that I would need an interior drain tile system installed along with a new big bottom basin pit & sump pump. John did an excellent job of explaining how water seepage worked and why an interior drain tile system was the answer. The problem was, John had not yet even been in the basement. He had already come to the conclusion that the answer was the installation of a drain tile system and sump pump & pit (at a cost of $4,600.00). We then went into the basement where John opened up the sump pit, saw one drain tile going into the pit and said that was evidence that there was currently no interior drain tile system. John then walked around the inside of the basement with me and showed me where water had come in through cracks in the basement floor and cove joints. We never walked around the exterior of the home looking for possible contributing factors. John's professional opinion was that the problem was the lack of an adequate interior drain tile system and that, for $4,600.00, he could have one installed and fix the problem. Over the course of the next week or so I had several other companies come out to give me their opinions of what the problem was. All of these companies looked at both the interior and exterior of the home to a**** the problem. All of them immediately found that my sump pump was not working. It also was discovered that there was an entry point on the exterior of the home where, during heavy rains, water was making its way into the basement behind the siding and along the top of the foundation wall. Additionally, one of my underground downspout extensions was plugged at the exit from overgrown sod. All of these issues were contributing factors to water seeping into my basement during heavy rainstorms. John (from Basement Flood Protectors) had not discovered any of these issues. I should also note that my home is only 7 years old and it was the opinion of the other company representatives, who came out, that my home already has an interior drain tile system. In the end, I went with another company and solved the problem for a few hundred dollars instead of spending $4,600.00 on an interior drain tile system that wasn't necessary.
Description of Work: Representative came out to locate the cause of seepage in the basement during heavy rainstorms and provide an estimate of the cost to correct/repair the problem.

Response from Basement Flood Protector Inc
For nearly 40 years my family has worked tirelessly to offer service with integrity, honesty, and at fair pricing. And we do this with very minimal errors or problems. This is nearly impossible to do in the industry we operate within (just look at the poor ratings of any of my competitors). I do not employ, nor will I tolerate, any employee that would knowingly encourage a customer to do unnecessary work (this seems to be what the member is implying). Our salesman, John, not only spends the time in people's homes to go thru many options, and receives many compliments because of his excellent explanations of possible solutions, he often returns to people's homes to go over what was done and provide further instruction when necessary. He does this without additional pay, and often without me even knowing about it. He is a very conscientious, hard working, and humble family man. While it is possible that circumstances changed between the time John inspected the member's home and others did (John remembers that there was no water in the sump pit when he was there, indicating the pump must've been working), there is also another possibility. It is entirely possible that John made a mistake. I know mistakes are completely inexcusable to some people, but we are all human and occasionally get something wrong. Since I know John is well trained (which we take very seriously), experienced, and would not purposely mislead you, I will conclude that John made a mistake, and I apologize. He would never try to sell you something he didn't think you need. His assessment to you was likely based on your description to him. (I often provide possible answers and solutions to people right over the phone based on customer's verbal descriptions). If you sincerely believe his intention was to mislead and rip you off, then your review is legitimate. But I humbly ask that you reconsider and please remove the review, and not tarnish my company's (or John's) excellent reputation because of an honest mistake. My employees and their families work very hard for and DEPEND on our reputation. And as far as I can tell, John's mistake did not result in any harm. As a consumer, I understand dealing with contractors and it is very easy to go back and find fault with ANY assessments in hindsight. Again, I apologize for John's mistake, whether it was an incorrect assessment OR being guilty of not being thorough enough. We want members to know that it IS entirely possible this could happen, but it is NOT our method of operation. Members can see from all our reviews that we rarely get a grade other than "A". I am glad that you did not spend any more money than necessary to correct the problem. That is definitely our goal for our customers. I would have liked the opportunity to discuss this with you before a negative review was posted. Please feel free to call and ask for me.

We were very pleased with the service and had used them before in a previous home (condo building). I would highly recommend the company as their pricing is fair and the product is very high quality. It was great that the company offers a variety of products at different prices so that the system can fit the needs of the home/building. Also, the installer also did an excellent job with the setup and cleanup after completing the work.

Jeff called within a day of my request for an estimate. He explained the product options and referred me to the website for more details and pricing. Tim came out within two days and installed the system after assessing the old system in the basement. It took him about two hours to complete the job. He was professional, explained how the system operates, and was very upfront about the price before he began any work. Basement Flood Protectors did a great job helping me to determine the best backup system for my newly finished basement. They didn't try to oversell me, which is nice because they do have a lot of expensive systems as well as their standard offerings. The installer arrived on time and quickly set to work removing my old hardware store backup pump (by this time it probably wouldn't have even worked had I needed it) and putting in the new Basement Flood Protector Black Label system. He also cleaned up a bunch of hanging wires from my main pump and tested the overall system. I hope I never have to use the system but I feel confident that it will be there if I need it.

Service and responsiveness was excellent. I spoke to Jeff on a Thursday and he was able to schedule an installation within days, even though the installer already had a full schedule. Roger agreed to come out at 7:00 AM in order to accommodate my schedule. He was right on time and the installation went great.
Description of Work: I needed a new battery backup sump pump system. After researching different systems on the market, the Red Label system offered by Basement Flood Protector was clearly the best system for the price. All the components are well made and the battery that they use does not require any maintenance (unlike other systems on the market).

My sump pump died and the Flood Protector battery ran down, so my crawl space was flooded and the water was just about to come up over into the family room. I called for service, and Roger came within 3 hours. Roger came, pumped out my flooded crawl space, put in a new switch on my main pump, recharged the battery on my Basement Flood protector back-up. Just to be sure that was the problem, he left a new battery and came back 2 days later to check the charge. When my battery was good, he told me I did not need to purchase a new one. He recommended and installed a new warning light that runs into my laundry room where I can see it, instead of in the crawl space. He was professional, caring and very nice, and did what needed to be done. He was careful to keep my family room clean, which is a challenge since the crawl space entry door in right there. The price was more than fair, and he could have sold me a new battery, but he told me I did not need it. I would highly recommend this company and kudos to a terrific employee!
