$1,650
I contacted Madelyn from Murco on Monday, May 19th at 2:33 p.m. within minutes of the listing being posted. Madelyn confirmed via email at 2:42 p.m. that the kitchen was still available and that I was the first one to contact her thus making the kitchen available. I then followed up with a phone call in which we exchanged information, agreed to the sale for which she sent me a follow up email with the invoice for the kitchen. Madelyn was going to contact me within an hour to confirm when I could get into the home to remove the cabinets. Once we had a time scheduled she would charge my credit card and I would be free to start the removal process. I called her twice and emailed her back trying to get her my credit card information to complete the sale. To be completely clear, this kitchen was advertised for sale at a listed price of $1,650 and the invoice they sent me was for the same price. It was not listed as an auction or up for bid.
I found it odd that after constant communication on Monday, I did not hear back from Madelyn Monday evening or Tuesday morning to finish the deal and charge my credit card. On Tuesday afternoon at approximately 1:05 p.m. I received a call from Jodi, the owner of Murco. Jodi called to let me know that because they had several people contact them overnight regarding the kitchen, the already agreed upon price was now going up. Even though thier website and craigslist add specificially stated first come, first served and the sale price, they have decided to turn this opportunity into a bidding war to try and make more money off of the sale. Jodi told me that they have already had offers above $2,000 and that I was welcome to make and offer or bid, but they would not be selling me the items for $1,650.
Jodi claimed that there was an error in communication between her web site posting, Madelyn and herself on how this sale should have been handled. She also tried to blame the contractor for raising the price after the fact. But I hightly doubt they were able to list the items for sale without consulting with the contractor before setting the inital price. I believe that she was greedy and unethical and chose to make an extra $300 - $400 instead of honoring her word, website marketing, and invoice that her company had sent out.
Response from Murco Recycling Enterprises, Inc.

"As a licensed auction company, we are hired to broker used building materials on behalf of the contractor and/or owners. For 25 years, we have worked to avail hearty homeowners the opportunity to acquire used building materials for pennies on the dollar. Recently, we have also begun outright sales (in place of traditional onsite auctions) of entire kitchens such as the one you were interested in. In your case, there was such a tremendous response of people wanting to buy that the owner urged us to pursue a higher price. This was after we began our marketing. It is not our normal policy to increase pricing once we make a project public, but we had to respond to the owner's wishes. We were hired to work by him, and our loyalties and efforts are on his behalf. There is no doubt that we made errors. We had internal miscommunications regarding this deal and ultimately I take responsibility. When I spoke with you I apologized. I offered to help you find another kitchen. I stand by that. To avoid any further issues of this nature, we have developed a new standard procedure for how we handle certain online sales and offerings. It reads below: "Murco reserves the right to impose a 24 – 48 hour hold for priced online offerings. The hold begins with the first bidder “in” at the listed price. Should no other bidder come forward within the timeline specified the first bidder is awarded the bid. Should other bidders come forward during the hold period, they have the option of bidding higher than the listed price. Multiple interested bidders within a short amount of time are subject to auction. High bidder wins. Should no subsequent bidders choose to bid higher, the materials will be awarded to the first buyer in at listed price." This policy is clearly spelled out on www.murco.net in our Terms and Conditions section. We also now outline this rule on the page where the materials are being offered, so as to make the purchase and potential bidding procedures transparent. Selling kitchens outright online is a relatively new practice for Murco. Our lack of communication and your resulting disappointment is something we do not intend to repeat. Our goal has been and always will be to improve people's lives and living situation through reuse. Thank you for your review. It has inspired us to reevaluate procedures that were unclear to buyers, and to make sure that we do disappoint in the future."

$3,000
Amazing. I kind of can't believe something like this exists, let alone that it's run so well and seamlessly. Jodi was responsive, clear and transparent, the crew she recommended was fantastic. I'm looking forward to going to one of the actual demolition sales once I improve my reciprocating saw skills.

THIS IS A GREAT COMPANY. THEY PROVIDE EMAIL NOTICE OF THEIR UPCOMING AUCTIONS FOR HOUSES THAT ARE ABOUT TO BE REMODELED OR DEMOLISHED. IT'S A GREAT WAY TO GET HIGH QUALITY BUILDING MATERIALS FOR YOUR OWN REMODELING JOB AT A GREAT PRICE. WEB-SITE IS VERY HELPFUL.
