Our AC went out when I was feeling under the weather and we had Northern Air come out and look at it due to the owner of the previous company we were using retiring. The engineer they sent was professional and prompt. It was $109 for the troubleshooting call, which was not applied to my repair later (many contractors I have used in the past apply the troubleshooting to the repair if they can't fix it in one trip). I thought it was a bit high, but I've seen worse. Then engineer quoted me $937 for the repair and due to the AC being out, a hot week on the horizon and generally not feeling well I agreed. After the work was done, a friend from out of state was in town who is in this industry. I mentioned the job to him briefly over lunch, and he said that was high. And not as in a little high, as in double what it should have been. I figured I could look at the invoice and justify the cost. But - I couldn't. Why? Because the invoice was not itemized, which is the first time I've seen a contractor invoice in this way. Very sketchy way of doing business. How much did I pay for each part? Who knows? How much was the repair work? No clue. Looking up the parts, one of them goes for $200-400 in general online and the other goes for about $60-70. That's what I could find as someone not in the industry, so they could probably do better. Lets just say, at the high end, the parts are $500. That leaves $437 in labor. He must have been out there all day, right? No - my security system tells me he was out there for far less than an hour doing the repairs. So, $400/hr in labor I guess? I filled out their web form yesterday asking for itemization or justification of this price, as I'd like everything in writing from them now and wanted them to email me. I mentioned in that form submission that I'd be writing reviews if I didn't hear back. One business day later I did not hear back from them so here I am writing a review. The technician was prompt on the first call and was very knowledgeable. However, I did have to call about a week later to remind them they still hadn't completed the job, and then they came out the next day. I have a feeling had I not done that it may have been forgotten about. So - good technician, but due to non-itemized invoices and potentially double the price of what the job should have been I'm going to choose a different company for any future HVAC work, and I recommend you do also. I posted this same review over on Google Reviews and the owner replied with "You called for service and we sent a competent technician to accurately diagnose the issue. We then quoted the total repair cost. You agreed to the total repair cost and we then obtained the parts, returned and performed the repairs, and then charged the exact same total price that was originally quoted. Thank you." Note he didn't deny overcharging or not providing an itemized bill. He also somehow got the review removed on that platform. I reposted it. Hopefully I can figure out under what means he was able to delete it so I can change whatever parts of the review violated terms over there. But since he's into reporting reviews, be skeptical of his high rating over there.

We always check before the heating season and cooling season. We don't like to get caught off with something not working for a long time. It hit us with our electrical stuff, but now we don't think we'll have that problem. It took them half an hour to an hour, just the typical time.

They come in twice a year and get all of our equipment ready for the next season. We are really happy with them. I think they are pretty good on price, we have had other people that have charged more and we weren't as happy with their service. They give good  quality service. They are responsible. A couple of times times they have had to make a return visit because they didn't have a piece that was broken in their truck. They are right on top of it. The workers are really nice.

The blower was not working in our furnace. The person who came was very nice and professional but he did not have the part to fix it. He said he had to go and pick it up. I asked what the cost would be and he said the amount plus his time. He did not say that the time to pick up the part would be included in the cost. I don't think that is right at all. How am I to know that he went and picked it up and came back. I did not argue and paid the entire amount which was $630 for a blower that seems very steep. He was at my house working for 45 minutes but we got charged for 2 1/2 hours of work! I had the work done back on 1/9 and don't typically write reviews but as you can see this is still bothering me. Next time be sure if the travel time is included in the cost of the service......
Response from Northern Air Systems Inc

"Mrs. [Member Name Removed], We do try to maintain a wide range of repair motors on our service trucks, however we didn't have the OEM replacement for your furnace which has a specific mounting frame. Gary found it best to obtain the proper motor and did need to travel to the far north end of Gurnee to get it. As you stated in your review, "I asked what the cost would be and he said the amount plus his time.", the time to get the part for your furnace is time spent addressing your job. We came to your home, diagnosed, retrieved the motor, made the repair and tested the operation of your furnace in a total of 2.75 hours. I do understand your concern that the tech went directly to and came directly back from the supply house without other stops on the way and I can assure you, that's not how we operate. Getting your job completed as efficiently as possible was Gary's intent. Thank you for the review. To discuss further contact me at 847-223-8877. Bob Ropke - Owner"

Furnace stopped working in the middle of January. Had to call an emergency service on a Sunday. Mike came out within couple of hours, quickly identified the issue and replaced the faulty thermostat. He even apologized for having to charge extra since this was a Sunday service call. Very happy that I called these guys.

I called the Northern Air Services emergency call number on a Sunday evening after we returned from a trip and the house was cold.  They informed me there would be a higher rate because it was a Sunday evening, which I much appreciated, rather than being surprised after the fact.  The tech showed up in less than an hour, as promised.  The tech diagnosed the issue, and was able to solve it without use of any new parts.  The tech explained everything that was done, and made some suggestions for the long term.  Overall an excellent experience across the board.

My air conditioner stopped working in July. I found Northern Air Systems on Angie's List. Contacted them that day, they called me back and were at my house within a few hours and fixed my system. So happy with the service and would highly recommend.

Scott was great! My husband made the call and on the same day he was able to come out. He was efficient, quick, and gave helpful advice for future work and maintenance. The price was very reasonable and we will definitely call to have furnace looked at before winter! Thank you to the team!

I highly recommend Northern Air to anyone who needs a new furnace or air conditioner.  The entire experience was excellent.  Bob started with a comprehensive review of what was needed, and in addition to the new equipment, added a return vent to the basement.  This is a terrific improvement and is something the other vendors did not include, which sets him apart.  All questions were thoroughly and promptly answered.  Installation was smooth and done in the estimated time frame.  Chris was really great, going above and beyond to move things around to make room for that new vent!
All the way through to the home inspection, Bob and his team provided outstanding service.  For example, Bob spent a lot of time with me going over the new, high tech thermostat, which included downloading the app to the phone and computer, and programming the summer and winter settings.  I can't say enough great things about our experience with Northern Air.

We have had Northern Air maintain our furnace and air conditioning for the last 6 years. They come every June or July to check and clean the unit.

Within 2 hours of calling Erich had the unit cleaned, checked, part replaced and running like a charm.  I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants reliable servicemen and quality workmanship.

We selected an option for repair, and Scott was able to repair it same day which was above our expectations.  In order to expedite the repair, the ex-owner actually ended up going to a store and picking up a part we needed after simply calling in to the office and asking if he could help in any way.  This saved us about $100 and an hour in repairs, and ensured we could get it done same day.

I would definitely recommend Northern for HVAC issues.  Great to work with in every way.

Response from Northern Air Systems Inc

"Our history shows that we've worked at this property 3 times since 2012. Two times in 2012 before I purchased the company and once in 2013. We do charge labor to replace any required parts and we do of course warranty the work we do. For us to replace the disconnect switch would run approximately $100. I do apologize for the lack of communication in getting your call scheduled and confirmed. It's something we were aware of and have worked very hard at correcting. Thank you for your feedback. The installation and followup from Bob's team was great. First we talked about the options and choices I had for furnaces, AC units and water heaters. Bob's team was clean and the installation went very smoothly. After installation, Bob himself performed the final check on the installation, ensuring that I was happy with the installation and service given. Great job!

We had an emergency on a Sunday and the guy came out right away to shut off the radiator and diagnose the problem. They had to order a part, but were able to fix the issue when the part came in about a week later.
