AMERICAN MATTRESS

Do not go in the store. The salesman was extremely pushy. I did not intend to buy a mattress that day. I had looked at quite a few mattress places, and there was a big box store that I wanted to look at to see how much their foam and latex mattresses were, before I bought a mattress. I really wanted a foam or latex mattress, but none of the mattress stores that I looked at had one that I liked and could afford. I told the salesman that I was looking for a mattress for under $1,000 that was fairly firm. He gave me two different spring mattresses to try. I liked the first one at lot better. The second mattress was way cheaper, but was not nearly as comfortable. The mattress I liked was on sale 50% off, which was a pretty good deal, but I was not ready to buy a mattress right then. I wanted to see if I could do an internet search on the mattress, and see if there were any reviews on it, or if I could buy it for less somewhere else. The salesman asked me how I liked it, and I told him that I definitely liked the first one, and I might get back to him to purchase it. He then told me that he had a coupon good for an additional 10% off. When I still said I would think about it, he told me that he might be able to get me an additional $50 on the mattress. He called the district office, and they brought the mattress down to $799. I again told him that I might be back. He told me that the store closed at 6:00pm, which only gave me a little over 1 hour to purchase the mattress, and he told me that the price was only good for that day. He then told me that he was perplexed because I told him I liked the mattress, and he knew that I would not be able to get it any cheaper any where else. This guy would not let me out of the store without buying the mattress. I really wanted to replace my mattress now, and so I finally relented, and bought the mattress. The price included delivery and haul away of the old mattress, but he talked me into buying a mattress protector, which was an additional $55. They delivered the mattress four days later, but they told me that they would be there between 3:00pm-6:00pm to deliver the mattress, and they showed up at 1:00pm, when I wasn't home yet. The mattress is OK, but I still would have preferred a latex or foam mattress. I wish I had never set foot in the store. I went to lots of mattress stores, and this was by far the pushiest place.

The initial sale went smoothly enough, with an expected amount of attempted manipulation and pressure. They canceled the scheduled delivery date because the bed did not arrive on time--that happens. For the second scheduled delivery (carefully scheduled, I wrote on my calendar while we were on the phone), it turned out that the sales person (Tom) did not enter the appointment in the computer, so he essentially canceled the second date too. What really turned us sour on this whole experience was dealing with Tom on the phone, who contradicted us and talked over us to the point that we finally hung up on him. He had to call his buddy at another store to save the sale, which they did just barely do. The salesman from the Skokie store was appropriate and fairly helpful on the phone. We finally got the bed delivered. The delivery guys said there was only one way to set it up, not high and low settings for the box spring frame as Tom had originally told us. And the finish on the bed itself is not NEARLY as nice as what is depicted in their catalog. I would not work with them again, and I most especially would not deal with Tom in the Evanston store.

I bought a mattress on sale on Dec 31st 2007 and was told to come back on Jan 4th 2008 to pick it up. When I called to see if it was ready to be picked up, I was told that it had been sold to someone else and that no more would be available. Then they offered me a more expensive mattress at a 'discount.' The whole experience felt like a scam - a clear case of 'bait and switch.' On my first visit I was told that I couldn't take the mattress with me at the time because it was the only one in the stock room to show to customers. The sales guy John Blais said he'd have one transferred from another store for me. When I called back, the person on the phone made no effort to disguise the fact that they hadn't ordered me one. He went immediately into a sales pitch about the more expensive mattress. I declined to buy from them and won't go back to their store.
