The installers arrived the next day at 10 AM. The installers names were Brandon and Anthony. They were very polite and introduced themselves. They also put plastic booties on their shoes before coming into the house. They took them off when they exited the house and put them back on when they entered the house. They must have gone in and out of the house about a hundred times and they did it every time. They laid out tarps along the entire path that they would be using in the house. They were exceedingly careful when moving things in and out. They cleaned up after themselves when they left. Everything was immaculate when they were done; there was not a spot on the carpet, a scratch on the hardwood, nor a ding on any wall. They also hauled away all of the garbage (including the old furnace, AC, and humidifier). They took about 10 hours to do the job. Brandon explained to me that things were taking longer because the furnace was located in a closet. This meant that there was only enough room for one person to be working at a time in the cramped space. Brandon gave me multiple updates throughout the day. He showed me the final product. He answered all my questions politely and throughly. He was also training Anthony and I could hear that he was being polite and courteous with him as well. I was very impressed.
I would definitely call Lifeline again for any HVAC issues.
The service technician, Corey M., was very helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. Long story short, this may have been one of the most frustrating installations he's had to perform, but he stuck with it and made sure that our new hot water heater was installed well and working perfectly.
We didn't have an issue with our old hot water heater, except that it was apparently a "ticking time bomb" as it was 23 years old. On the advice of our heating system service provider, we decided to proactively replace it and got it quoted through a number of places. Lifeline came out to be just slightly higher than the lowest quote, but I was sold on having Corey do the work based on the other places we had come out. Corey arranged to match the lowest quote, so I feel like we got both a decent deal and the best possible installation service.
The removal of the old heater was apparently a bit of a pain, as it was heavy and filled with years of sediment (Note - you can prolong the life of your water heater by flushing it every year or so, particularly if you have hard water). Corey and his coworker hauled it out of the basement and out to the garage. Unfortunately, I noticed after Corey left that in that process part of our finished garage floor chipped due to the dragging of the heater. I'm not super happy about that, but overall it doesn't change my review of Lifeline.
Getting the new water heater installed and hooked up to the gas line wasn't so bad. But the water hookups required some fancy plumbing calisthenics to get the copper inlet and outlet lines to line up. Our basement is pretty shallow, so there wasn't much room to work above the heater. Plus, we opted to have the optional (although seemingly required) expansion tank installed as well, which left even less room to work.
...which leads to the big issue and the debacle that made this job take probably twice as long as Corey had planned. The new water heater was about 1-2 inches taller than the old heater and the old flue pipe only had a very slight pitch to begin with. There was no way to use the existing flue pipe as it was. By this time, the installation had already taken about 6 hours, and Corey figured another 3-4 hours to finish. As it was 8pm on a Friday night, we opted to have Corey go home and sleep so that he could finish in the morning. I certainly didn't want a fatigued person to rush a job that has gas and carbon monoxide risks. On Saturday morning, he ended up having to notch out the brick where the flue pipe meets the chimney to raise the pipe up by 2-3 inches. This was a big job and certainly wasn't part of Corey's original plan. But as I mentioned earlier, Corey stuck with it and remained professional throughout the whole process.
