Residential Soundproofing Floor, Wall and Ceilings

I contacted Dave Snyder from Chicagoland Rennovations to ask about soundproofing my ceilings. He answered his phone promptly and then asked how he could help me. I explained that I was interested in soundproofing my ceilings because I've got an unusually noisy upstairs neighbor.
The first question Dave asked was how big the area is and I gave him the room measurements. He said he'd figure up a price. I asked what he was figuring a price on, when we hadn't discussed what he was going to do to solve the problem. Dave asked, "what do you care about more, the price or the results?" I said both were important to me.
I wanted to know what method he proposed for soundproofing ceilings because I have done some study on this issue and know that some suggested methods simply won't work in my case. Dave said that he wasn't going to explain the process because it didn't matter. I went along for about a minute until he said the price would be $8,500!!
Of course, I deserve to know what the process will be and how my money was going to be spent. He said that he had no obligation to provide that information; that it was proprietary and he didn't want his competitors knowing his business. I assured him that I'm a homeowner who has no interest in brand names, but I would certainly need to know if they were going to drop a new ceiling, tear out my existing ceiling or if they were just planning on slapping up another piece of drywall with green glue or mass loaded vinyl in between. He refused to give me any information upon which to determine the value of the work.  When I told him I didn't think that was fair of him, he hung up on me. 

Horrible, horrible, horrible. I don't care if he is the best sound-proofer in Chicago, I would never ever give this man any business.

I called David. He asked me what the problem was & what the sq footage of the room was. He said he’d calculate a price. I asked him to wait a second & to tell me about the methods he planned on using. He asked me what was more important - the results or the method. He quoted me $8000 but wouldn’t give me any information on the method. I told him that I wasn’t spending $8000 without knowing how he how he was going to achieve the results. He was just incredibly unprofessional. He absolutely refused to discuss the details of what he’d do for me. There are many ways to soundproof & I would think he’d need to know more about my situation to know how much he would charge & I also deserve to know what I’m paying for!

I thought they were great. They knew what I needed and they let me help design it. I did a first round of soundproofing, but by the window I had flanking noise so they had to come out 7 inches over the window but he eliminated the problem.  I had a screaming baby on the other side of my bedroom wall.  I would recommend him for soundproofing definitely as he knows what he is doing.  They did the work in one day.  Their quality is excellent.  I just had them out here for another estimate.  I would absolutely use them again in the future.

I received 3 estimates, Chicagoland Renovations was the last estimate. He was also a Supreso Drywall distributor. He was professional, neat, and on time. He came out with Hugo and completed the job the same day. I will definitely use him again.
