Jewelry Sales/Design/Repair
The backstory: Years ago my engagement and wedding rings suffered at the hands of an incompetent jeweler, there were several issues and I had basically accepted that my rings were forever scarred. Then, when I needed them sized down and took them to a jeweler who said the setting was broken and the diamond was in danger of falling out I decided to wait until I could find a really good jeweler to handle the repairs.
I reached out and, being in Lincoln Square, the well-established jeweler right in the square seemed the best choice. I took my rings in there and asked about the repair/sizing costs and the stiff folks behind the counter gave me a number far larger than I was comfortable with so I decided to ask around. Three separate people recommended Nina's, and the yelp reviews backed them up so I decided to take a chance.
First impression: the building is kind of a hole in the wall, it needs some work for sure and it almost scared me away, but I went in anyhow. The store isn't flashy inside but after speaking to Ray for awhile I realized that the store isn't flashy and the building isn't the best on the block simply because they focus on what they do well - which is jewelry, and, more importantly, they don't gouge their customers. You're going to pay for your jewelry or repair, you're not paying for their new paint job. Folks, the number I got for the repairs/sizing AND having my rings re-dipped to be white gold again was 1/4 the price of that other shop's basic repair/sizing. I kid you not, 1/4 the price.
I agreed to let Ray do the work and he was very thorough, discussed a new setting with me that would hold up to my abuse, even though it was "a little more expensive" (I'm thinking $50, he tells me $15). I agree that the new type of setting is best and Ray gets to work. He even calls me before proceeding when he discovers my diamond has a tiny little chip on the corner, which will be covered by the new setting but he wanted to make sure I was aware of it (I was, it happened when I broke the original prong). About a week later I go pick up my rings and they are beautiful. Ray went above and beyond, they're polished, the mess that the previous jeweler had left behind has been fixed, the attention to detail is amazing, the new style setting is perfect, I can honestly say that they look as good as (maybe even better than) new.
I won't hesitate to go back, and I'm telling everyone I know about how wonderful this place is. Seriously, my rings are perfect now and I'm beyond happy!
