Tom, the heating and A/C service manager, and Kristi, the vice president, helped with our installation from beginning to end. Tom was incredibly wonderful with communication, explaining every detail patiently, and always trying to give me a heads up if anything was a little different than planned. I had called A.W.E. to help with our steam boiler system. Another company (Four Seasons) had installed a new steam boiler in our house, and the boiler had caused corroded steam pipes in the basement to burst, resulting in extensive damage to the house. My first thought had been to repair or replace the boiler and to fix the corroded pipe. However, Tom and Kristi explained quite patiently to me that because of the age of our house and the fact that multiple visible steam pipes were extensively corroded, it was not a wise idea to have a new steam boiler in our home. They explained that any new steam boiler is stronger than an old steam boiler (ours was at least over 20 years old), which most likely had been winding down for some time. They explained that when the new steam boiler pushes hot steam through the system, corroded pipes are likely to rupture. They also explained that many of these pipes are inaccessible behind walls, and if there is extensive corrosion on visible pipes, there is almost certainly corrosion on the inaccessible ones. Finally, when the necessary chemical flushes are done to clear the system of mud and debris, these chemicals can actually remove the debris that was patching holes in corroded pipes and thus facilitate bursting of pipes. We are obviously not experts in the field, but all of this made a lot of sense. It would have been easier for them to try to fix the boiler and the ruptured pipes, charge us money, and then throw their hands up in the air denying responsibility when things continued to go wrong. Instead, they turned down the job and its money because they felt repairing or replacing a steam boiler in this situation was very unwise for us. After a lot of thought, we asked A.W.E. what they would recommend, and they suggested that we try to figure out a way to install forced air heating and A/C in our house. Tom spent hours at our house, and likely hours in planning on his own I'm sure, figuring out how to make things work. He ended up using vents we already had for our existing A/C system, modifying them to make them better, and installed two separate furnace and A/C units on the first floor. Because we had never had a forced air heating system before, the spaces where the units had to fit were tight, but they made everything work. Our son was also a baby at the time, and the crew tried their best to do quieter work when the baby was napping. They also tried to be considerate with cleanliness during the project, as we had four children running/crawling barefoot around. I have been so cautious with praising them given a past terrible experience with the other heating and A/C service. I have not posted for several months, just in case things fell apart. But, it has been 3 months, and things have not fallen apart. We have very good heating and A/C on our first floor. We have fairly consistent temperatures; I would say that there is surprisingly little temperature variation between the rooms now, considering how old and drafty our home is. The Nest thermostats work well. The service technicians seem to adapt to my type-A personality and my many questions, and do their best with timeliness and cleanliness. For the most part, the techs always are polite to me, even at those times in the past when I was upset. I am sure A.W.E. is not perfect, as no company is perfect. But, it seems to be me that they are more honest and have more integrity, and try harder to do right by their customers, than any other heating and A/C company that I have ever encountered. I really hope that they stay true to themselves and continue to do the best they can, as they surely truly did with us. We are so thankful for them and to them.

"We cannot thank you enough for the review! We are SO grateful to have been able to help you when you were at your wits end! It's times like those that make us so grateful that we do what we do in the industry. There are so many companies out there that just aren't transparent to their clients, as you experienced. Our goal, as a team and as a company, is to educate our clients on what to expect from a company! There is a level of trust and honesty that we have that we will continue to "stay true" to but most importantly we will always stay true to our clients! You had a horrible experience with a company that came in and just swapped out your boiler for another, without looking at the full job. You also had a unit catch on fire previously to that installation. We just wanted to be that company that you could count on not only to give you every option possible for your home, but to ease the stress of what you had been through....and we THANK YOU for trusting us fully! It's situations like yours and clients like you that make us keep going in the industry. We are family and we certainly do care about you and your family! Thank you for taking the time out of your VERY busy schedule to post this. We will forever be grateful to you! THANK YOU FOR BEING OUR VALUED CLIENT! Kristi Grimm Vice President"

We called the company for service on the old furnace and AC unit.  The unit was old and we knew we would have to replace sooner rather than later.  The technician that came was professional, explained fully what was happening with our unit.  When we asked question s about a new one, he gave us facts and prices without any pressure The work was scheduled quickly.  The technicians came and worked all day to make sure that the unit was installed correctly and that we knew how to operate everything.  There was even a follow up call to make sure that we were satisfied.

"***We have never serviced this client*** This client had called us back on November 18, 2015. He purchased a $79 water heater special through Angie's List. We do not service the Oak Park area and the client was informed of that was was advised to contact Angie's List for a refund. We advised our rep from Angie's List and apologized for the inconvenience. As to why he feels the need to rate us an F in all categories is beyond us at this point as our Client Care Specialist advised the information to the client on the same day at 10:45a which was 1 hour and 45 minutes after the client contacted us. It's unfortunate that this client gave all F's as there is nothing that we did wrong. We will ALWAYS own up to any mistakes but in this case, we believe that it is no fault of ours. We were responsive, quick to advise the client that they are out of our service area and also contacted Angie's List for the client."

Overall, I would not recommend anybody to use AWE in the future, I certainly will not.  I provided an F overall because the main purpose is for the provider to provide a reasonable service.  I had waited two weeks for this diagnosis due to rain delays and my experience is as follows.  The diagnostic went okay, the technician seemed to be detail oriented.  I got concerned at the end when he called another technician to verify/confirm his diagnosis.  After the call  I was told my system is low on R-22 Freon, and they recommended adding 1-2 Ibs.  This is when things went south.  He pulled out his price sheet and suggested the following services:  Recharge and Balance Freon - $242, 1 Ib of Freon - $99, Freon Sealer - $323.  I have had multiple homes where I required A/C services, and never was I charged a Recharge and Balance Fee (hook up the hose) when Freon was required.  I declined the services, communicated my dismay for charging to recharge the system.  I then called another provider that stopped by, did a diagnosis, provided 1 Ib of freon for $99.  AWE uses a bait and switch strategy to gauge customers for add-on services.  I will not be a returning customer.
Response from AWE Air Water Energy

"Thank you very much for your feedback. Unfortunately we have absolutely no record of any of this situation. We have a client with the same name that we performed an air conditioning cleaning on 6/4/16 but it shows that the client paid the $79 and technician documented exactly as follows.......CYCLED SYSTEM ON TO TEST OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT, AT THE FURNACE, CHECKED BLOWER-OK AT THIS TIME. CHECKED WIRING, NO LOOSE CONNECTIONS. CHECKED CONDENSATE LINE-NO CLOGS AT THIS TIME. AT THE AC, CHECKED PRESSURES, FOUND UNIT TO BE LOW ON R22(CLIENT DECLINED), CHECKED HIGH VOLTAGE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM-ALL WITHIN RANGE AND ARE OPERATING AS DESIGNED. CLEANED AND CYCLED WHEN COMPLETE. Client paid $79 on a visa card. Depending on how low on refrigerant that the unit had, we always offer a balance by subcooling, unliake MANY other companies. Here is why.... It increases the efficiency of the system since the amount of heat being removed per pound of refrigerant circulated is greater. In other words, you pump less refrigerant through the system to maintain the refrigerated temperature you want. This reduces the amount of time that the compressor must run to maintain the temperature. The amount of capacity boost which you get with each degree of subcooling varies with the refrigerant being used. Subcooling is beneficial because it prevents the liquid refrigerant from changing to a gas before it gets to the evaporator. Pressure drops in the liquid piping and vertical risers can reduce the refrigerant pressure to the point where it will boil or "flash" in the liquid line. This change of phase causes the refrigerant to absorb heat before it reaches the evaporator. Inadequate subcooling prevents the expansion valve from properly metering liquid refrigerant into the evaporator, resulting in poor system performance. We are aware that this is not easy to understand by many clients that are not in the HVAC industry, and that is why we are the company that we are. We do not force any client do agree to anything that they don't feel comfortable doing. If a client declines, out certified technician will document, as ours did, and move forward with the cleaning. Our company does not do a halfway job in the industry. We perform a precision cleaning and it is thorough. In the HVAC world today, we have realized that MANY clients have, and continue to be taken advantage. We will NEVER just go out to a client's home and dump refrigerant in and leave. When there is refrigerant missing that sometimes means there's a leak if it's anything over 2 pounds. WE will also offer leak searches if we are unable to visibly find a leak and those are priced high as the do take anywhere up to 4 hours + the cost of refrigerant. We certainly feel bad that this client feels the way that they do and we are always open to hearing from clients. In this case, there has been no complain filed with our office."

The experience was awful and my advice to everyone is not to use them because they're not honest. I initially called AWE because they were offering a $99 a/c tune-up with a free 1 gallon of Freon in the local mailer. They first came out on May 5th to do the tune-up and they immediately found that I needed to have both switches, on both units, replaced at $200/piece. The technician then mentioned the service contractor agreement, that they offer, where I could get a few dollars off each part and at first I accepted. The technician installed the switches, and Freon, and was gone within 45 minutes of arriving. After he left, I read the fine print, on the back of the service agreement, and it contradicted a lot of things that the technician said, so I immediately called the office to cancel the service agreement. A few weeks later, 5/30. the air conditioner completely stopped working. I immediately called and the first questioned I was asked was if I had a service agreement with them. As soon as I said "no', the technicians whole demeanor changed and he said they "weren't" going to come out tonight because they "didn't have flashlights." The person I spoke to then said I would be one of the first phone calls in the morning - it's now 9:50 a.m. and I'm still waiting to hear from them.
Response from AWE Air Water Energy

"This is a first time client with a unit from 2003. Client called in and scheduled a cleaning of 2 air conditioners that offered up to 1 POUND of refrigerant for FREE, not 1 gallon. It is clearly stated on our coupon that went out last month so there is nothing that we hid there. Our service technician went out to the client's home and saw that MANY repairs were needed as it looked as if the unit had not been cleaned in a very long time. When units are not maintained annually then it is HIGHLY likely that many issues arise, in which case was happening and we were lucky to catch. The unit was 1 pound short on refrigerant and client refused repairs on the downstairs unit. We will always offer our MVP to clients, especially when our certified technicians see that the units have not been maintained. It's to save our clients money and maintain equipment so that we can catch situations as they arise. The client did call and cancel the agreement and was refunded the amount, less the discounts given to him that day. As for the comment made by our technician, it is never the first question asked. We ask that question no matter what and our technician doesn't know as he doesn't have records from home. We NEVER run an ac service call after dark as it is dangerous for our technicians as well as our clients. As for the complaint on the call, we did contact the client later than usual because of coming off of a very HOT holiday weekend and we were swamped. As much as we realize how frustrating that is to say and for our clients to hear, we do try our best to keep up with it. When we did call the client, he said "just ***** forget it" and hung up on our Client Care Specialist. We never received a call from the client any sooner than our phone call in the afternoon. If this was a huge issue we always expect our clients to call in and speak to a manager to resolve. Client did not do so, just went on social media to complain. It is unfortunate that we are not always perfect but we have a reputation that we always stand behind our service and do what it takes to get 100% client satisfaction."

The tech believes that the issue could be 1 to 3 things.  We could have a bad thermostat, circuit board or blower motor.  He is coming back after the holiday weekend with parts ordered to troubleshoot.  I like AWE service and technicians but back when I originally bought my Lennox over 7 years ago, I figured I was buying quality and it would last quite a while before major repairs were needed.  We have even had to have AC coils within the furnace replaced.  I am not sure if I would buy a Lennox again.  Not really AWE's fault and I have friends and family with Lennox that are good so not sure what to think.

Response from AWE Air Water Energy

"Thank you so much for your review! As you know, over the years, we will go above and beyond for our clients. As much as we would like to think that our manufacturers make perfect parts, it's not always true. However, as a Company, we will strive to be sure that we do the best that we can to be the go between. We will always have our Rep from our manufacturer look at the unite, after our Service Manager, and if it is their fault, they will handle. And unfortunately this happened over a holiday weekend when our supply houses and manufacturers are closed so the part takes longer to get. We did get the client on the schedule as soon as possible. The client only agreed to a 5y part/1y labor warranty and no extended warranty so there are charges that incur. We offer financing for service and will work our clients as we never want to be a financial burden to them. We are working with our Valued Client and will continue to resolve the manufacturer's issue and get our client cooling. We thank you for your continued support and for continuing to be a Valued Client!"

DO NOT USE these people.

I called AWE Air, Water, and Energy to clean and service my two furnace / air handler units and see if they could install Wi-Fi thermostats. I was told that they could and that the cleaning was normally eighty nine dollars ($89) but that they would do them for seventy nine dollars ($79) each. On May 10, 2016 the two young servicemen from AWE showed up. I showed them the thermostat for the first floor unit that and was told that I need a five wire line to run the Wi-Fi thermostats. I later found that to be untrue as Bryant Wi-Fi thermostats run on four wires. I had bought ones that would have required the five (5) wires but they did not tell me that the correct thermostats, the only ones that would work on my “communicating furnaces” are the Bryant ones. I then showed them the second floor thermostat which the technician removed. He said that they would have to rerun a five wire cable for that one also. He then plugged the thermostat that he had removed from the wall back in and it did not work. The system had been working fine before. Then both technicians went into the attic to find out what had happened. It turns out that they had blown a fuse in the process. It turns out that Bryant furnaces have to be turned off before the thermostats are removed or reinstalled. I would have thought that they knew this before they begun.  It was then that the technician told me that they were a Lennox and not a Bryant recommended company, and then he said “but we can service all brands”. They found the problem and fixed it and then serviced the units. As they were servicing the units they informed me that they did not have the filters that are meant for my unit but will put in the one they have and “it should be fine.” They also recommended that I have them service my humidifier while they were there for an additional seventy nine dollars ($79). I agreed.

The servicemen came when they said that they were all done and handed me a bill for seven hundred and one dollars ($701). I asked them why it was so high and they stated that there was a three hundred dollars ($300) charge to repair the problem -that they had caused!

I reluctantly paid the bill and they left.  Before they left the one technician apologized for the mess but said that they had cleaned it up as best as possible. After they left I looked and noticed that they had tracked the blown in fiberglass insulation from the attic all thru the house. Then some-time later my wife discovered that there was broken drywall in the ceiling of our foyer right by the furnace. It turns out that one of them had slipped off the walk way boards in the attic and damaged my ceiling and never told us about it!

I called AWE and explained the issue and was told a supervisor would be out to inspect the problem but could not get there until tomorrow between twelve noon and two pm.

The supervisor, Ken finally arrive d at 3:15pm and looked at the problem and then asked to look in the attic. He spent quite some time looking at the insulation and the furnace. I asked him what he was looking for and he did not answer. His demeanor and attitude were not one of being cooperative or apologetic. When he was finished I explained that we were hosting our grandchild’s first year birthday party and needed to have this fixed as soon as possible. I asked him what the process was moving forward and he said that he will talk to the “powers that be” and get back to me. I asked him if they were going to take care of this as I had called the person that does our paintwork and was waiting for a price to repair it and wanted the go ahead to schedule it as it usually takes a couple weeks to get him out as he is good and busy. He said that they had been in business 100 years and that they will take care of it but will want to send in a painter to give them an estimate. I explained that I had been in my business I had to deal with the insurance industry and know that I do not have to accept the lowest priced estimate and that as long as my painter s price was reasonable and charges were customary that they would be obligated to pay. Ken said he would talk to the “powers that be” and let me know. I asked for a time frame for that to happen and he said he did not know.

I called my bank and discovered that AWE had submitted my check earlier that day and that it was “pending”.  I decided to stop payment on the check until all the issues were resolved.

The next day Ken called and said that the powers were away at a conference and that he would not be able to speak to them until Monday.

I received the estimate for the repairs to my ceiling by replacing the broken drywall and repainting the entire ceiling (which is in a two story foyer which requires scaffolding) will be five hundred and twenty dollars ($520).

It also turns out that the technician installed the incorrect filters which I then had to order and have installed by another company at a cost of eighty five dollars ($85) for the filters and twenty dollars labor ($20) totaling one hundred and five ($105). I also paid the company an additional one hundred and nineteen dollars ($119) to check and verify all was working properly.

I have not received any further communications from AWE. I will wait to see how AWE proposes to resolve these issues.
Response from AWE Air Water Energy

"Unfortunately this client has gone to every social media outlet possible when we are thoroughly working with client and have offered to pay for the damages since the moment that our technicians went out there. We advised that we would like 2 quotes and the client has refused to do so and went all over social media, bashing us when there has never been a time that we denied that our technicians made the mistake. 2 of our senior technicians were at the client's home and were in the attic. One of the technicians foot accidentally slipped and damaged the drywall of the ceiling. We admitted to it, asked for 2 quotes, client got one and refuses to have another painter that he doesn't know. As of Friday 5/27/16, client was asked to send us the quote from the painter. He said he doesn't have one and it was only a text message. Our Office Manger advised that we would like a quote and then we will be happy to pay and we have yet to receive the quote. We have NEVER denied the issue, the payment or anything. Unfortunately this client likes to complain on BBB, Angie's List and everywhere else even after we agreed from day one. Although we also appreciate feedback from our clients, this is an unnecessary complaint and we will not stand behind it. The ball has been put in the client's court and as soon as we get a legitimate quote from his painter, we have said that we will pay. We look forward to getting the quote."

Response from AWE Air Water Energy

"Thank you very much for your review. We are a company unlike many others out there. We care about our client's health and indoor air comfort. When out technician was out there for the cleaning, he only recommended replacing the units because they are 18 years old. The furnace was very rusty. The air conditioner contactor was burnt and the fan motor was rusted. We will always give cost of repair options but when the repair price is almost 1/2 of the cost of a replacement, we will recommend replacement. The average life expectancy of a new system is 10-12 years. Anything over that we do not recommend replacing parts but we will always abide by what our client's want. When will units go out?? On the hottest or coldest days of the year and we do not want our clients to experience that frustration. We are always happy to work with our clients but we always need to give all options.    They are great. We are on a maintenance plan with AWE ( a great value !) . They come twice yearly to inspect, correct , adjust and replace if necessary , the filters for  the  furnace and air conditioner.  They are prompt , professional and personal. they are clear on what is in need of repair/replacement and also ( I like this) they will offer that it "nearing" the replacement date -but does not need to be replaced now. I trust them . I have several experiences with them and they have always treated me with integrity, professionally and with the highest technical skill.  They are  professional repairmen/technicians  and not " salesmen" . ANd they are very good at what they do. Great company for all HVAC and Plumming needs . Highly recommend ,,,,and have for the past 4-5 years.
We had the pleasure of dealing with NIck and he , like all the AWE tecnnicians, was great  to deal and work with .

"Thank you so much for your review! We are so very happy to hear of your continued satisfaction with our entire company! That is what we are striving for and we are SO happy that you see how we stand out from the rest. We couldn't do it without loyal clients like you. We are large enough to take care of all of your home comfort needs but small enough to care! It's all about our clients, every day. We also appreciate you seeing the importance of annual maintenance as it is what helps with finding any issues before they happen, keeps up warranties and keeps the unit running to manufacturer's standards. We thank you for your continued support and for being our very VALUED client!"

Plumbing
I have mixed feelings. They got the job done, but they said that they would not give us a warranty because they found almost like a ball of hair. So, they said that they were not sure where it came from and they would not warranty their work which kind of made us scratch our heads. We still went with them. There are no problems yet so they got the job done. I would shop around because they were a bit on the expensive side. I was happy, but they were on the expensive side and they would not warranty their work.
Response from AWE Air Water Energy

"Thank you very much for your feedback. We appreciate any and all feelings that our clients have. We only warranty work when it comes to installs, service or replacing parts, in both hvac and plumbing. We can't warranty hair in a drain as that is something that will happen again and doesn't warrant any warranty. I can assure you that the majority, if not all, companies would not warranty that kind of work as well. I can also assure you that we are priced very competitive in the industry as we have been in business for + years and remain competitive for high quality work. The only thing that confuses some clients is the fact that we don't chanrge by the hour. We are flat rate and that allows us to service our clients fully and have no hidden charges. It is a huge advantage for our clients and builds trust and reliability between us. When you have a company that has 100% client satisfaction, premiere service, A+ on the BBB and Angie's List as well as many other awards won that are based off of our client's feedback, we must be doing something right. I assure you that we didn't get to where we are by taking advantage of our clients, nor will we ever. We will never be the "low cost leader" because we strive for perfection and happy clients. Again, thank you SO much for your feedback and I certainly hope that you call us for all of your other in home comfort needs. We Care. It's Personal."
