The workers showed up promptly the first morning - two guys that looked barely out of their teens and one somewhat older who introduced himself as the supervisor. Since I have asthma, I asked that they try to keep the dust down and I was assured they would. When I glanced down later, the only dust barrier they were using were a couple of old shower curtains I had left for them. Grit was everywhere upstairs, and then bugs of all kinds (spiders, beetles, gnats, etc.) began migrating upstairs, on walls, furniture, carpet, even my bedspread. I made a trip to Walmart that evening for bug killer, and I spent hours killing and cleaning up. It was a while before I felt safe enough to sleep.
I was startled awake the next morning by the jackhammer drilling in the basement. Of course I asked for an explanation. The supervisor stated that when they had arrived that morning, they had knocked and rang the doorbell front and back and had knocked on the windows, all with no result. They then discovered that I had forgotten to lock the back door so they decided to walk in and start working. I found that the doorbells did not work, but I have a real problem with these guys just walking in my house. This made me so uneasy, I had all the locks changed ($45 we had not planned. My phone was next to my bed, volume on high, but I guess this alternative didn?t occur to them.
The job was ?complete? on the third day. I was not able to inspect the basement until the next day, and I was really shocked at how bad it looked. The vinyl barrier was puckered and the tape was slapped on like an afterthought. The worst was the area we wanted to remodel. We had not planned to add paneling to the outside walls (from the photos in their brochures, the walls seemed acceptable even with the tape running through the middle. We couldn?t add paneling to the walls because the vinyl barrier had been stretched around the corners in a curve eliminating all ?corners?. The drain trough was also curved and did not meet the corners correctly.
After discussing the issues with the crew?s supervisor (Steve Jones), he came out and performed a ?little? remedial work. He spliced extra material into two of the corners to make them square so now we were able to install paneling (another $400 we had not expected). The other two corners were not easily accessible so those had to be skipped for now.
All in all, we spent a lot of money for a job of inferior quality. Our "finished" walls were a far cry from the one in the brochure provided by Midwest.
"As a company, we are discouraged to hear that a homeowner is unsatisfied with the work that we have performed at their residence. We addressed mold and drainage issues at the home as stated. The walls in the basement are a block foundation that contained mold so it was recommend to rid the wall of mold with a mildewcide on the walls and subfloor, scrape and remove loose paint and delaminated areas of masonry block face and to fill cracks and plaster block faces as needed. It was also recommended to do full wall vapor barrier with our waterproofing system to protect against moisture, mold, humidity and potential wall leaks. It is a durable 16mil, Class A (fire Rated) vapor barrier wall covering, but is not considered to be a "finishing" product like paneling or drywall. It is also an option to the homeowner to do the full barrier. An EZ Breathe ventilation system was also recommended to the homeowner at no additional charge (we often do this with full systems) to improve humidity levels and air quality through out the entire home through air exchanges, however the homeowner decided to not take this option. During our jobs, we always use vacuum systems with our jackhammers and hang plastic to keep dust at a minimum. It is stated in our proposals that some dust should be expected from the work, dust clean-up will be done by broom only and that we will tarp, but not responsible for dust. Our crews try to do as thorough of a clean up as possible, but particles in the air can settle after we have left the job. Dust does not usually make its way in to the upper level unless there are open vents. This may have been something overlooked by our foreman and will be addressed to all of our employees at our next meeting. Our project manager made several personal trips out to this job during and after the work was done for quality management. The homeowner seemed pleased when the job was finished and signed off on our completion certificate. The certificate is to be signed ONLY when the owner certifies that all materials have been furnished and installed by us and that the work has been completed and performed in a professional manner. There is even a notice to the owner to NOT sign until they are satisfied that we have done so. The homeowner then voiced concerns to our company a few days after the job about the barrier and corners. Our project manager Steve Henry returned to the job site after speaking with the homeowner about all of her concerns and made the adjustments. Our manager had the homeowner go in to the basement to make sure all of her concerns were addressed before he left the property and it was assured to him that he had. It was mentioned an issue with bugs and spiders, however It is highly unlikely that the work we performed caused an issue of allowing bugs and spiders to enter the property. The work may have disturbed the current environment and caused them to move elsewhere, but this is complaint that we have never had brought up to our company in our 35 years of business. Every basement or crawlspace we perform work on is a different and unique situation. Our brochure pictures are taken in the most perfect of situations as is any advertising picture to promote a product. We strive to perform all of our work in a professional manner and as perfect as possible in the current basement condition. After our project manager left the day of making the adjustments, we have received no other calls of complaints from the howeowner. The system has been tested with flash flood type rainfall and we received no call of water intrusion or issues with mold, which was our main purpose to eliminate at this property. We understand the homeowner has asthma and wanted to make it a healthy living environment for her. This review has been given over to our project manager to further address the concerns of this homeowner. We want to make sure we have done everything that is possible by our company to set things right."
I think they did a very good job. They cleaned up after the job. Overall experience, I am grading them an A. I am also going to use them in the future.
"Upon first review of the home, it had an existing basin and system that was not installed by our company. We added an additional basin and sump pump, complete with a discharge line. We were then called by the homeowner awhile later and stated that he was getting water in at the seam (where the floor and wall meet). Our production supervisor explained that it was a system issue (not installed by our company), but we would be happy to send out a technician to observe and see if an adjustment could be made to the existing system. The following day, a foreman arrived at the property and spent a few hours chipping out the concrete and installing a piece of cove plate, which is designed to resolve these types of issues. The discharge was also adjusted upon the homeowners request. No service fee was charged and upon leaving the homeowner was thankful and satisfied to our knowledge."
