I've always had good luck with mechanics, but Jerry (the owner) is a gem in the rough. Among small businesses, Avery's is my absolute favorite and he's been my mechanic for about 7 years. There is no one more honest. I'm a bit ashamed that I haven't thought to submit a review sooner.
If you are looking for a sparkling clean shop with guys in fancy uniforms, this is not the place for you. There is no waiting room with a television or complementary coffee or a free car wash. If you're looking for the ease of being able to turn your car over to a mechanic with decades of experience and know the repair will be done correctly and you'll receive a fair bill at the end, you've found it. Jerry, by the way, is a pleasure. He'll talk shop with you and a bit of neighborhood gossip once you get to know him.
Avery's is the kind of place where being a regular customer is fantastic. The tailgate lock on the truck was broken recently. Because our truck takes some abuse, I knew it was one of those kind of repairs that even if it is fixed good as new, it'll break again. I expected it to cost $200 or so, but instead, when I went to pick up the truck, Jerry said, and quot;Ah, no charge, no big deal.and quot; He had cleverly put some bolts in and now it's solid as a rock and looks great. It's better than new. It will never break. I was so happy that I left cash on his desk.
His honesty is refreshing. I wanted a hitch on the truck, he directed me to go to U-Haul because, as he said, that's all they do and they can do it cheaper. Years ago, a car needed - I think it was extensive transmission work. He directed me to another shop because of the same reason.
But don't get me wrong. He's done all of the standard repairs you have from owning a car for years, as well as things like brake work, engine work and I'm sure many things I've forgotten. He used to do repairs for the cars the railroad police drive, which take some abuse, so I know he's dealt with things far more challenging than I've given him.
I feel like a shill writing this, but I can't say enough good things. We've considered moving and when we do, we always half-joke, and quot; How can we move away from Jerry?and quot; Having a shop like this makes life just a bit easier.
