I had lost my ergonomic pillow and was in a hurry to replace it or I wouldn't have paid Romaine's steep price tag. The lost one had cost me around $30 some seven years back. This new one was $100. But it was Tempur-pedic. I figured it would work much better. When it turned out to be so firm that it literally hurt to sleep on, I took it back. Two days had passed. The seller explained that although the item is guaranteed, just as he'd promised, a guarantee doesn't mean you can have your money back if it doesn't work. What guaranteed does mean, I'm not sure. The eventual outcome wasn't horrible: The seller never budged on the no money back policy. It's written (in tiny print) on their receipt. I'd missed it, but it's there. It's also under glass on the counter. I'd missed that too. Instead they gave me two items that each retailed at the shop for what that Tempur-pedic pillow had. On Amazon those items list for about 50% the Romaine's price, so in effect the shop gave me the means to get my money back if I'm willing to do some work. For me the moral of the story is: you bet, shop local. It's the right thing to do. It costs a bit more, but more of the money stays in your community. Local retailers tend to mean well, and they'd like you to be satisfied. However!!! Not every local retailer believes it's his job, even at twice the price, to provide the same quality of service you'd get from an online retailer.
Description of Work: Was helpful and friendly and entertaining and sold me an ergonomic pillow which ended up not working out.

We purchased an Englander King sized mattress from Romaine's approximately seven years ago. One of the main things we were looking for was a great warranty, since a good mattress is costly. The one we chose had a 15 year warranty. After seven years, the mattress was so 'broken down' we woke up in pain every morning. We called Romaine's to inquire about this, since we had a 15 year warranty, and they said they would come out and pick up our mattress, take it back to their store, re-stuff the pillow top, and deliver it back. So they came out and did that. It felt great for about another month. Then it was back to the way it was, broken down, and feeling as if you are sleeping in a hammock, and waking up in pain. We decided to go into the store to talk to them. They said that's what we should expect with a pillow top mattress! That we should expect to feel as though we are in a hammock! We said that's not why we bought the mattress! If we wanted to sleep in a hammock, we would have bought hammocks! We were in a lot of pain, our mattress was broken down, and we wanted them to honor their warranty. They said we had to be able to measure 2 1/2 inches in the lowest part of the mattress that was breaking down, in order for them to honor their warranty, and they'd never seen that in the whole history of their store. We were able to measure just under that, but clearly the mattress was not fit to sleep on, when examining the mattress, even the untrained eye can tell that the middle-side of the mattress had no support left at all, and was completely broken. They said all they could do was to give us a "great deal" on a new mattress!!! Why would we buy from them again?! They wouldn't even honor their so-called 15 year warranty on our first mattress! We shouldn't have had to buy a new mattress; they should have honored their 15 year warranty when this mattress was clearly broken and unable to be slept on! So since they wouldn't honor their warranty, we ended up buying a new mattress, from someone else, and will never shop at Romaine's again, nor recommend them to anyone!
