Showed up at 8am and started work right away. Did want check in hand before starting work.
Driveway looks good so far, and the sealant doesn't seem to rub off on shoes / feet.
I contacted the Lakeville location, due to the better ratings but found out later that the work was deferred to a Bloomington franchisee, which does not seem to have a presence on Angie's List.
My initial experience was positive. Got a call back shortly after leaving my contact information on voicemail and had someone come out to give me an estimate and his crew came out to perform the work the same day.
The price was a little higher than other estimates but due to the positive reviews I read, figured it would be worth the difference.
When the work was completed everything looked pretty nice and I was fairly happy with the results.
Shortly thereafter the problems began:
I did pay on the day of service, my check was deposited two days later and had cleared and a month later received a past-due notice.
Within two months I noticed that the sealcoat started to deteriorate amidst the snow melt and several snow removal events. By the beginning of spring all of the sealcoating had washed away and am back to where I started last fall. With lots of residue at the bottom of the driveway and in the street.
I have made several attempts to contact Richard but to date have not heard back to date as to how this will be resolved. I happened to speak to him once and he knew exactly who I was, as he mentioned my address without me providing it. He indicated that he would be out later that day to take a look. Have not heard from him since. Left several voice messages without response.
Besides the durability issues, the coating started to stick to shoes and boots, damaging floor mats and leaving tar-marks on floor tile which was nearly impossible to remove.
Due to the durability problems and unprofessional follow up I cannot recommend this company or it's franchisee and would recommend picking a different company.
Update: Strike 2: (6/5/13)
Several weeks ago. Seal King's crew happened to knock on our door, indicating that they were there to take care of the driveway. We had to send them away because it was an inopportune time. Additionally this was hours before a severe rain was expected, followed by many days of rain. We had not been contacted as requested to arrange for a time or to go over the issue. The workers were sent away with a message for the owner to call us to set up an appropriate time. To date (6/5/13) no phone call or any attempt of communication has been received.
Overall Experience Rating: F
Update:
Received a call (vm) on 6/26/13 from Richard, indicating that his crew would be in the neighborhood that day and was wondering if they could take care of the driveway that day. I did call him back shortly thereafter and agreed to have them come out that day. When I asked Richard what the reason was for the deterioration of the sealcoating, he stated that when the sealcoating was applied, the mixture was too thick, causing it to break down shortly thereafter. He had experienced the same problem at his own residence. Never received an apology for the inconvenience or lack of professionalism.
Later than expected that day, a different crew than the one that originally applied the sealcoating showed up and performed the work. They did a nice job, however caused some overspray on the newly painted house. I had taped off the edges of the driveway over my new concrete and probably should have taped off a larger area, including the bottom of the house. Who would have thought.....
Overall Experience Rating: raising to a D (will adjust again in a few months, depending on the durability of the latest application of sealcoating).
Update: 6/12/2014:
Unfortunately the sealcoating did not last through the last winter. We are back to a bare driveway.. all the sealcoating has disintegrated and ended up in the street. New laws were passed requiring seal coating companies to use materials that are supposedly less harmful to the environment with concerns for runoff into public waters, Well what they have seemed to have accomplished is come up with a guarantee to get even faster runoff. I may have just have them deliver a couple of buckets of sealcoating so I can dump it into the street which would save me the frustration of thinking that my driveway is sealcoated, only to find out that months later it has to be sealcoated again. Either this company uses inferior materials or politicians have taken the consumer to the cleaners once again, forcing lesser quality of life and unforeseen consequences that are worse than the problem they attempted to resolve. Needless to say, Seal King won't be doing my driveway anymore and may have to look for a place where I can find some good quality sealcoating material.
pretty good before winter was even over. Forget using any sort of chains on your snowblower - they'll go right through the coating (our previous coating didn't do this). I understand that this coating will wear over the course of a few years - but I'm disappointed in just how much it has worn in the short time since we had it applied.
We're having a pool put in now, so there's been a lot of heavy equipment moved over the driveway, so I didn't expect the coating to survive that process very well, so no sense in going back to Seal King at this point to see if they'd do anything for us. I don't know if there's some option to have an extra-durable coating applied or whatever, but I'd probably go that route if they offered it.
Again, no issues at all with the people or process or application, just didn't have good luck with the product this time around. Even though I said I would use them again, I'd probably shop around a lot more next time and compare the products they use.
Seal King wasn't the cheapest service but they weren't too high either..I spoke to neighbors who used them and they seemed satisfied which helped me choose them. Other companies had cheaper prices - $99 for everything, but I ran across negative reviews for each on AL from a couple of years ago and thought, why take a chance?
Seal King's crew arrived on time, did the job and left. Everything they said they would do they completed and I was able to pay over the phone while at work so it was a good deal for me. I would use them again.
