I e-mailed the owner, Jack, a couple weeks ago to get information on pricing for a 1800 sq. ft. modular home. He called back shortly and was very good about explaining things to me and we made an appointment to see a modular home his company had built. I was shocked that it felt like a manufactured home inside. I was grateful for the couple that they had an option that they were happy with and that they could afford to build, but I couldn't help thinking how hard it was going to be to resell the home. Then his sales manager in our area invited us to see an upgraded home in our area on his lot. It was upgraded with 9 foot ceilings, and nicer cabinets, but I was still amazed that it still looked like a manufactured home. Later in the week I e-mailed plans to their custom plan designer and he was very accomodating it getting pricing for me. The sad thing is all expenses in, when you put in enough upgrades to make the home feel conventional, you are paying the same price, no matter what they tell you in the sales meeting. We had a local builder give us the same estimate. In the end we decided not to build and go with an existing home. I do have to say that the sales manager was excellent, in that he was polite, and answered all of the questions we need to get to the bottom of to make an educated decision. He may not have sold a home, but he did the Christian thing and was honest in his dealings with us. The designer was also very amiable and prompt in answer questions. I was frustrated that I no longer got e-mail responses from the owner, nor did they give me references after asking for them several times. I had gotten references from two other builders in my area who promptly gave me over a dozen, and they were all good numbers with good reviews. To me, that says a lot.
