He came out and was real friendly. He talked and talked to me. He told me that I needed to repair the line because it was 30 years old. I have cast iron pipes and he said that after thirty years they start to crumble. He convinced me that the lines needed to be repaired. They would have to dig up my yard. He dug up my trees that gave me privacy. He said that maybe they could get by with digging up half of one. He makes me sign this contract for nearly $18,000 to dig up my front yard. The trench was four feet deep. He would dig up the pipes and replace them with plastic ones. He was stuffing the contract up my nose. I kept thinking about where I was going to get the money. I thought at the last minute that I better put in on my credit card. I had to pay half up front and the rest after it was complete.
The next morning, my driveway was full of all the equipment. He said that they were going to have to dig up all of my plants. I said "NO!" I begged him to only take the one out. He said he would do the best that he could. I had a doctor's appointment that day. I gave him instructions to only tear out the one. I left. I came back at about three in the afternoon. He had dug up all of the palms. There was a four feet deep by three feet wide trench almost all the way to road. He said that they were going to have to pull up the sod. He said that they would put in on a tarp and water it everyday. I look and it was all upside down with the roots exposed. When I pulled it, he called me over and said that he ran into a big concrete box. He said that he couldn't dig through it and couldn't go any further. I found out that it was an old sess-pool. I looked for the crushed pipe and I didn't see any pieces anywhere. I told him that I wasn't paying $18,000 until I saw the crushed pipe. He turned white as a ghost. I told him that I didn't want a new pipe. He let me know that his boss is on his way. He called over for his guys. They packed up everything and left. The boss came and had all of the paperwork in his hand. He was so shaky. He said that he was going to come back with his boss the next day.
By then, my son had sent over his friend that owned a Handy-man business. I found a plumber on Angie's list who came out and looked at it. He sent his snake is backwards through the clean-out by the street. Why didn't Roto-Rooter do that too? He came out with all kinds of things. He then sent his camera in and it was clean all the way to the bend. If the pipes were crushed, he wouldn't have been able to do that. He told me that my problem was the City's problem. I called them and they sent men out right away. They were fully equipped. They found a great big blockage and cleared it out. I told them my Roto-rooter problem. They said that people should never call them. They should always call the city first.
Roto-rooter came the next morning. You could tell the guy that sold me everything was nervous. The big boss told me that he could refund my money and call it a day. I had already cancelled my credit card. When they came in the morning, my car was parked behind their digger. They were not to happy about that. I told them that they could have it after they filled in all of my holes and replaced my trees. They told me that they were not in the tree planting business. I told them that they needed to replace my sod. They told me that it was just crabgrass. I paid a lot of money for that grass and it was not crabgrass. They drove away and that's the way they left me.
Imagine my surprise when we got up the next morning and the toilets backed up again! I called Roto Rooter back (no local people, they're in Chicago) and they were immediately helpful and said they'd send somebody out. A different man came, and said that he would have to charge us $255 again because it's not guaranteed! The man that came yesterday said nothing about it not being guaranteed, but the only way to have a guarantee is if you pay at least $160 more for them to call a camera tech to send a camera down the line! My husband was very angry and after the technician call his boss, they agreed that he could give us 30 minutes to try and snake it again, but we would have to sign a waiver that if the pipes were damaged, it wasn't their fault! Anyway, he snaked it and had us run the showers and flush the toilets to check them (which was something the previous technician didn't ask us to do) before leaving.
Although I really appreciated the tech, Michael, that came today. I was very frustrated by their lack of responsibility in doing a good job and guaranteeing their work! Although Roto Rooter is very convenient, I doubt that I will call them again.
Blockage was cleared completely. Nothing different that would be done.
