We had Gulf Coast Shutters provide us with grommet system hurricane screens for our first floor windows and hemcord system panels for our second story windows. The estimate and installation process went very smoothly. The installers were experienced, and very professional (thanks, Danny and Devin!), and made sure we completely understood how to put up our screens and panels. We would do business with Gulf Coast Shutters again but fully expect that we're good for the hurricane season now.

We purchased hurricane shutters from Gulf Coast twice for various parts of our gulf front home. First time was for roll downs on the back and sides of our home in about 2010. The purchase price was approximately $34,000. They were very professional and fairly responsive, offered service contract but seemed to have a hard time getting organized to come do the service work. In 2013 we decided to add accordion shutters to our porches for extra protection and called them. They did a great installation with a great product, $23,000 purchase. BUT you will NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN. They DO NOT service their product, they are ALWAYS "backed up". You will find it extremely difficult or impossible to find someone else to do repairs or service for you in an emergency. Other companies do not want to service someone else's work. In Fall, 2016 we called them to come do regular service on all units--not free, we expected to pay, some wouldn't roll down, some locks on the accordions were frozen, we were just trying to maintain an expensive purchase, they said they would come in about a month, put us on "the list", NEVER came in 2016. In June, 2017 I called about a roll down that was off track sitting on floor and the service I never got in 2016. They do not answer OR return calls as their phone message says they will. I left a message, after three days I started calling every hour. Finally a live person answered, said I was "on the list" for repair (from my not returned phone call--how was I to know they got the message?), "no we don't set appointments, you are ON THE LIST (oh okay that "list" again) and it will be about a month since we are backed up." Wouldn't tell me how long the "list" was, or approximate date in time, said they were "backed up and it depends on the weather." She was very curt almost rude and annoyed, it is now three months and we have not seen them or heard from them. My neighbors who spent even more than we did with Gulf Coast can't get them to come for service either. With the approach of Hurricane Irma, he couldn't even get his shutters to roll down. DO NOT buy from these people, great sales, great product ------ABSOLUTELY NO SERVICE AFTER THE SALE, NO CUSTOMER CARE. They only want the sale. If you live ocean front, service is as important as the sale due to salt and corrosion. I am waiting for service, over a year now and counting.......Do not buy from someone who will not set an appointment for service, they do set appointments for sales, go figure. I would NEVER use them again, and would say don't walk, RUN AWAY from them. When the company was first begun, original owners seemed to care, but struggled with finding enough competent service staffing, current management apparently doesn't even try.

"We strive to provide quality service for our customers. We are sorry that you feel you did not receive exceptional service and will take the appropriate action to make corrections where needed. The owners and staff of Gulf Coast Shutter genuinely do care and provide service to our customers well after the sale. We appreciate your business and want to try to support you the best way that we can. We will review our policy and the scheduling of service work to see if we cannot make some changes to improve the process."

As for the sales experience, they followed up diligently but I happened to get an email that the sales guy accidentally cc'd me on instead of only sending to his office mates which contained some false statements made to his boss that were a bit offensive. Maybe it's just the nature of the sales game saying what the boss wants to hear. If I hadn't seen that email I probably would have rated this company better. Who knows, maybe the sales guy learned a lesson in email etiquette from this experience.

"We at GCS take pride in providing the best products for a customer that meets and exceeds their needs and requirements and to also educate the customer so they can make an educated decision. We appreciate the feedback and understand that this customer was upset due to an email that our new salesperson had sent out and mistakenly copied the customer. We apologize and do not condone this action but do provide an open door policy for our employees to discuss issues that bother them and to help them work through it and grow as an individual and improve the business. In this case, our new salesman intended only to express his concern and frustration of the competitive pricing after spending an ample amount of time preparing 9 different quotes for this customer. There was nothing negative about the prospective customer in the email and the salesperson attempted to contact the customer by phone to apologize without any luck or return calls. Since we do not see the other quotes, we have to make some assumptions based on what we know. We do know that some of our products are exclusive and no other dealer in this area can purchase or sell them. We also know the cost of the products, cost of doing business, and cost of having well trained members on our staff. We believe our installers (not subcontractors) are the best in the area because HP is all they do and focus on, and they have many years of experience in doing it. GCS carries exclusive products and there are several cases where the products we carry are superior to other product offerings due to the Florida Product Approval Testing. As well, when we pull a proposal together, we consider not only current but also future changes in the building code; we also understand some of the variances between insurance companies and building inspectors and what they expect to see. There are many factors that can influence price and variables to consider and we try to be as thorough as possible and also do it in a manner that maintains the safest environment for our installers and protects the homeowner. This has been explained to our new salesperson and is now part of our training to help educate anyone new that joins our team. We may not always be the least expensive up front but what we do provide is going to be correct and will help the customer make an educated decision that’s best for them to include selecting a competitor‘s products and services. To stay at the forefront of the industry, GCS is a member of the International Hurricane Protection Association and also very active in the local American Institute of Architects and Community Association Institute. We know that we are the only hurricane protection company in the Florida Panhandle that is a member of the three organizations and active in them. We do this because we believe it helps us to be the best we can be and provide the products and services an individual or business may need. The downside to not using subcontractors, being safe (e.g. using lifts in place of ladders at times), fully insured, and being members of the IHPA and other organizations is that it’s not free and comes at a cost; a cost we believe worthy. We have specialized in hurricane protection since the opening of our doors back in 2001. We work to be the local experts in relation to products, building code, understanding potential changes within the insurance industry and building code, and installation experts. We don’t win every job but do make it a point to try and educate prospective customers to make the choice that is right for them and their situation. We wish this customer and his family the best and based on his investigation we are sure he’s made the best choice that fits their needs. Because of his feedback and other input we did modify our training and oversight for new salespeople to help improve our processes, their education and mitigate potential for problems."

I researched this project extensively. This company was by far the most professional, had a fair price, and they used the best equipment. They did an excellent job. We had one tiny snafu, one of the windows was broken, but they immediately sent a window company and installed a new window for their mistake. Everything was done exactly as they said. The correspondence was very professional.
