My Toyota Avalon had a COP ignitor go bad on cylinder one, causing the engine to miss badly. Thanks to the crappy Toyota design, all kinds of engine parts are removed before you can get to that inward cylinder bank. While the engine is apart, the 2 other cylinders on the same bank were done due to the labor of replacing just one COP. All in all, a big chunk of change, but a lot less $$ than a dealer would charge. Anyway, as I was pulling away after the overnight service, one of the owners noticed a noise in the front of the car. They determined that it was a bad tensioner pulley. It needed fixed also as it was going bad. Because the owner felt that that issue should have been caught while doing the other service, they proceeded to fix the issue just for the cost of the pulley part - no labor! I would have felt it fair that they charge labor for that repair also, but they threw labor in because they almost let me drive away with that bad pulley. It is little wonder that they are rated #1. PS, I also received the other 2 COPs that were replaced, so now I have some spares.

I have used these people for about a year. Previous to this visit I asked them to check the tires as I had had a blow out and it was replaced and it was losing air. They said they were all good. Come to find out, the one that had been replaced was way old, had plugs and a metal plate in it. So I replaced that with a Mastercraft from Kauffman. So that left 3 coopers on the auto. They totally missed it the bad tire with the plate and plugs. On 9/2/16 I went in again, stating same thing I am losing air. The guy told me that with the weather you have to put air in your tires monthly, and all tires were good and air put in etc. When I left the alignment was so bad I had to literally hold the steering wheel to the left, but on Seminole blvd with hurricane weather I thought it was my imagination as the guy that test drove the car would have noticed. It sat for 2 days during the rains, when I took it out again same thing so I took it to Sears for alignment, and told them about the tire losing air, she said take it back to Kauffman it is under warrantee. I just returned from Kaufman, they informed me that I had a tire on that was from 1999 and I should not be driving on it. I said no, I have 3 coopers and the one you put on. He showed me a tire Michelin with numbers indicating it was manufactured in 1999. I immediately called Christine and said I was sure that as they were rotating tires they just grabbed the wrong one. GET THIS, she told me that could not happen as Honda is unique and Honda is the only car that uses that tire size. I realized they did not know much about tires thru experience, but when she told me this, and I know not much about cars, I knew they know nothing about tires. I then told her then it was deliberate, and she informed me there was no way that could or would happen. Too bad, so sad for you, you can't prove it and we are not going to do anything about it.

Went to Hummel because it had what seemed like good ratings. My son’s car was flooded, thus at Hummel for repair. The service person Kim started out aggressive and down right rude. Finding additional damage instead of contacting our insurance, she called my son demanding we pay. I told her, I will speak to the insurance. Done deal insurance said no problem we’ll pay. Today Kim called saying the car was ready. When we arrived to pick the car up and pay our deductible, Kim refused to release the car without Progressive’s check. At no time during the repair process (a week and a half) did Kim say, they would not release the car until Progressive Insurance paid. I’ve never had this experience, my insurance “Progressive” said they would work direct with the repair company. The insurance adjuster, Michael spoke with Kim several times throughout the process. He said she never mentioned not releasing the car until Hummel received Progressive’s check. I too had not experienced this manner of doing business during an insurance claim. We provided Kim with documentation showing the checks were issued to Hummel and written in the correct amount/s. She still refused to release the car. I am disabled, yet by her aggressive and ruthless demands, I was forced to drive to Progressive in Oldsmar Florida, 21 miles away. I had to bring back a check or she would not release the car. We met her demands. My son just drove off the lot a couple miles down the road the engine like came on. He took the car back, Hummel is now saying it’s the O2 sensor, and that’s not included in our claim. Michael with Progressive specifically told Kim yesterday to replace all needed parts, Progressive would take care of it. I don’t understand why Hummel didn’t test drive the car before calling to say it was ready. Not professional and Kim’s aggressive treatment of any person, especially a disabled person is down right deplorable. FYI called Progressive they are paying us direct to speed up the process, my son is there now waiting for his car to be repaired again.

I?ve been using Hummel Auto for years. Christine, Jessica, Jeff, and rest of the staff are the ultimate pros. They are very friendly, extremely competent, and the best repair shop in Pinellas county. My latest visit resulted from a windshield washer low quantity light. When I attempted to refill the reservoir, the fluid was coming out the bottom as fast as I was pouring it in the top. Even though I didn?t have an appointment, they checked the reservoir immediately in case they had to order a new one. In order to get to the reservoir, they had to remove a front wheel and remove the wheel well liner. The fluid hose had come loose from the bottom of the reservoir. They reconnected and secured the hose and replaced the wheel liner and the wheel, all without any charge! The staff at Hummel are as honest and trustworthy as can be! Their customers can have complete faith that they will be treated fairly and honestly. It?s no wonder they have received so many awards over the years! I can, and have, recommended them to several friends, and every one of them have become steady and repeat customers. The old fashioned friendliness and outstanding expertise make Hummel the best!

That's a terrible outfit. They do a terrible job. Then we went back, it's still leaking. So they said you need a new gasket on your transmission. The things weren't cheap, a couple hundred dollars each time. I took it to another mechanic and he told me that they didn't tighten my oil filter.

Response from Hummel Tire And Auto
Well Mr. [Member name], you brought your vehicle to our facility 4 times. The 1st time was 06/16/14. this was your request: * Customer is going on a trip and would like the following done: 1. perform oil change 2. replace engine air filter 3. replace spark plugs, please check cylinder compression 4. inspect drive belts 5. lubricate the upper knuckle ball stud at steering and suspension ball joints 6. transmission overheat light comes on and then automatically takes it out of overdrive 7. rotate tires. all of the above repairs and maintenance were performed this day total $653.00 ** "8 months later" ............ 02/04/2015 You returned for a routine oil service. Your concern was: 1) Customer is noticing a puddle of oil when vehicle is parks on a flat surface, does not notice the leak when at a 30 degree incline. **tech notes for this day --performed oil change and check up ( now this is the 2nd oil filter we've installed) --radiator is leaking , recommend replacement --trans cooler hose is leaking , needs to be re-clamped and refilled --power steering pressure hose is seeping , --"possible" rear main seal leak (oil leak), we are degreasing the motor and will have to recheck it. --transmission pan gasket is leaking, replacement under warranty - it was installed here during the transmission repair 1st visit. Completed Total for this day $74.00 *** You returned a month later 03/02/2015 (this is usually too long after a degrease to effectively pinpoint fluid leaks) 1) customer has approved the previous recommendations and also is requesting replacement of hood shocks**(hood was falling on him while adding power steering fluid) . FYI : he did spill some so you will probably see p/s fluid residue by the reservoir 2) recheck rear main seal to see if it is leaking This day we performed the recommended repairs and degreased again when done. * Total repairs $932.00 **** 4 Months later you again returned 06/26/15 for regular service. 1) customer request to perform oil and filter service ( this is the 3rd oil filter we will install) 2) customer says the a/c blows warm -request to recharge it 3) customer request to re-inspect for any fluid leaks Tech inspection notes for this day --performed oil change and check up --battery fails testing - return to selling vendor for warranty --- Refrigerant is low * recharged the a/c now it is BLOWING COLD - no obvious leaks at this time - added dye * find that the a/c air flow volume through the vents is very low - "suspect" blend door issue blocking it - this is located in the dash. This requires diagnosis if the customer is interested. --Coolant leaking at thermostat housing ( located on the motor) --Minor coolant "seeping" out of the water pump ( located on the motor) Customer declined these recommended repairs * total for this day $80.00 Conclusion: Your vehicle was obviously in a "state of disrepair" when you brought it to us the first time. We started to seal up multiple fluid leaks then degrease each time when we were done. ** FYI - The oil filter is full of oil at ALL times when installed. Vehicle level doesn't make a difference. So for you to simply state that "it was just a loose oil filter" doesn't fit your history of repairs along with the filter getting replaced each time.

I took the vehicle to them because the dealer wanted 400 and they gave me a quote for 200. when i got there and they heard the dealer said i needed it done they checked to be sure it actually needed doing. half of it didn't, and they saved me at least a hundred dollars. they were honest, even when it cost them money, and they do good work. my breaks feel brand new! The following letter was sent to Florida Dept. of Agriculture & Consumer Services: W. Alan Parkinson Regulatory Consultant Florida Dept. of Agriculture & Consumer Services parkinw@doacs.state.fl.us Ref: 0901-01373/WAP Dear Mr. Parkinson: Please accept this reponse to my complaint. Hummel Tire/Auto claims that my car 's oil level was within factory specifications. as well as having sludge in the oil pan. They also suggested I take it for a second opinion inspection. The above does not correspond to the actual facts in this case. 1. The oil level at the time of the engine failure was virtualy non-existant. I personally inspected this first hand immediately. A passerby also was present and verified that there was no oil in the engine. 2. My 1997 Lexus was recalled in May 2002 and repaired by the Lexus deale in Orlando. This was done at 94678 miles. Since that time the car has never had a problem and all maintenance was performed as recommended by the factory. 3. I did take it to a certified mechanic, GW Automotive. Although the oil pan had already been removed, GW concluded that the oil filter was clean. They also found pickup was free of obstructions. There was no sign of a 'sludge' problem. 4. The Service Manager at Carmax,Clearwater, has never seen a catastrophic failure like that on a Lexus. Several questions are still not answered by Hummel: 1. How did the rod bearings get into the oil pan. 2. Why did the car lose oil pressure all of a sudden. In addition, although Hummel states that car was inspected by Shop Foreman, Lead Technician and both owners, these are the same people that 4 daays earlier punctured the right side axle seal. Hummel allowed the car to leave the shop with this defect. The point is, mistakes happen and I understand they can not be perfect. All I want is to be made good for that mistake, allowing my car to leave only t suffer a catastrophic failure within the next 60 driven miles. I have attached all the paperwork to backup this complaint. Sincerely, Bob Lima 10218 Thurston Groves Blvd. Largo, FL 33778 727-319-8594 limadb@yahoo.com
Description of Work: Took my Lexus for an oil change. The worker did not put the drain cap properly and the engine burned out on I -275 on New Years Eve. They would only refund my $45 back for the cost of an oil change. The car was totaled as it would cost more to put an engine than the car was worth. Response from Hummel Tire And Auto
We can all appreciate your wanting to protect the public. The Department of Agriculture is there to look into unfair practices. I believe that this is unfair to NOT post The Dept. of Agricultures findings upon looking into the cars repair history as well as our findings when we removed the oil pan for inspection. Our report to the Dept. of Agriculture included pictures of the condition of the engine interior showing the history of the " lack of lubrication" that this engine has endured. The result of not replacing the engine oil often enough is oil coagulation, called "sludge". The engine block interior walls a well as the piston connecting rods were red in color. A repair order from the Dealer on your car, because of this sludge condition, did not list the oil pump as one of the replacement parts. I also sent a letter from a TOYOTA Master Tech. (this engine is also used in Toyotas) stating the shortened life of any engine part after the "sludge" condition. Your clean oil would be very hard to see at night on the dip stick (on the side of the road). The oil was full upon arrival. You couldn't have left our repair facility without a sufficient amount of oil, the oil light would have indicated that right at start up. The Dept. of Agriculture concluded that the engine oil pump failed due to 100K plus miles and reviewing the repair history. Hummel Tire and Auto was released from liability. Viewers are encouraged to post both sides of a dispute to allow their viewers to come to their own conclusion. Everyone's reviews are appreciated.
