We called 6 roofers for estimates at the height of the rainy season All were listed by GAF as "Master Elite" certified. This was important to us because we would be able to get GAF's Golden Pledge, 25 year labor and materials leak warranty. With the Golden Pledge warranty, whether or not your contractor remains in business, GAF will stand behind his workmanship for 25 years!
I've got to say that the communication from Curry's sales rep, AJ, was the best. He either answered calls to his cell phone immediately or if he was with another customer he would call back shortly after leaving him a voice mail. That was not so with reps from the other roofing companies we contacted.
Curry's quote fell in the middle of the pack. We decided to go with Curry after talking to other homeowners who used them. Curry also gave us address of homes with the shingles we were considering so we could see the finished results on a home.
Curry's sales rep, "AJ" was the most professional. His knowledge and explanation was the best. AJ was honest, easy to talk to.
Curry offers the Golden Pledge as standard in their pricing. Others wanted additional $600-$1200 for the warranty.
We went to the Curry "office" to look at full sheets for shingles rather than the small samples on the sample boards. We met with Mike who was very accommodating. He pulled out anything we wanted, set them outside in the sun for us to compare.
We were given an estimate of installation date of 3 weeks before start of the job.
We were told it would take 5 working days to complete which was right on. The 3 man crew was on time every day arriving shortly after 8AM and working until just after 5PM The lead crewmember was Rubin who would answer any questions I had. They worked like a perfectly synchronized team. Prior to starting work every day they put out tarps to catch debris. Every day AJ would also come by first thing and walk the area with a magnetic pickup to gather any nails that were in the grass. He would also get on the roof and take pictures.
The job came out beautiful.
AJ came by the following day for final payment. Initial Deposit was 10% of contract price. AJ at completion brought us the Final Invoice, Notarized Release of Lien, Warranty paperwork and instructions on how to get a $250 GAF rebate for Veteran's promotion.
Curry has over 75 employees and they have been around for a long time. I highly recommend them.
"This was very enjoyable to read. Thank you putting time into writing this review for [Member Information Removed]. Rubin and AJ work extremely well together and we are happy to hear how well the process went for you. Thank you again for your review."
"We apologize for this mix-up. We are always trying to better our processes and we learn a lot from our reviews. Thank you for your feedback."
"Thank you for your feedback!"
I agree. Everything went well and they were extremely neat in the way they worked and did a fabulous job. We had a problem that the 2nd batch of tiles were not color-matched to the first as the supplier had sent the wrong delivery truck to us. Unfortunately, no-one noticed until the two batches of tiles were sitting right next to each other. This was not Roofing by Curry's fault and they went out of their way to get the tile company on site to fix the issue. I suggested to R-by-C that they check batch numbers when deliveries arrive, and I might just do that myself if we ever re-roof.
They seem a little less responsive to organizing annual maintenance visits, though. I am still trying to get an appointment for our first year's inspection after 3 weeks and 6 phone calls, for example. They may just be overwhelmed by work, but it is a little frustrating to have to call so many times to organize this.
Overall, definitely an "A" - I would use them again.
"We are sorry to hear about the mix-up and the trouble in contacting us. We hope to have fixed any problems that caused that. We are glad to hear that you were happy with our work as well. Thank you so much for your review!"
"Thank you so much for your review! We love hearing how well AJ worked with you."
Curry's bid was roughly the same as one of them, and about $600 lower than the other. The fourth bid (the one that wasn't a GAF Master Elite roofer) was about $1,500 lower, but he was a small company and I wasn't sure if he wasn't going to be around for long, and the longest leak-proof warranty he would give that included labor and materials was five years. Manufacturer warranties for materials are fairly useless because if their shingles are defective, all they do is send you more shingles and you need to pay a company to remove all your old shingles, and put up all the new ones, which is the bulk of the cost.
Curry roofing has been in business for a lot of years, and I could see from their website that it's being passed down to a new generation and will be around for a long time to come. That means my leak-proof warranty will be honored.
When I bought my house in 2008, I had them replace the roof decking and shingles on a small section of the roof that was leaking. Three years later, when I had a small leak that was coming either from that section or a nearby section they had not touched (it's hard to know where a leak is coming from because the point at which the water goes through the shingles isn't usually the spot where it drips through the ceiling - it's often several feet away), they sent someone out within a couple of hours and fixed the leak free of charge.
That's a main reason I went with them: because they're one of the largest roofers in Sarasota, they have plenty of people available to fix leaks on short notice. If you hire a small outfit and it rains for three days in a row in the rainy season, the little company can't keep up with all the leak repairs, and you end up waiting while water enters your house. Ditto if the owner is on vacation or has the flu. Curry was on top of it quickly.
Curry has won many awards for excellence from GAF. GAF is one of the biggest manufacturers of shingles and they don't give the awards out to many places. GAF does a good amount of quality control, and actually came and inspected Curry's work after Curry finished. So their awards are based on checking the work of contractors.
I figured all the above and a 20-year guaranteed full warranty was worth the $1,500 more than the lowest bidder, and would save me far more than that over the next 20 years, so I did not hesitate to go with them. Some roofs have problems in the first 10 years, and most shingle roofs in the Florida sun and heat start to leak after about 15 years and need to be replaced between 15 and 18 years, so I'm bound to save more than $1,500 over 20 years.
They did high quality work and were pleasant and professional to work with, and were very responsive. I will update this review if anything changes, but I currently highly recommend you use them.
"That is wonderful to hear. We thank you for choosing us and leaving us this great review!"
