From start to finish the job was a complete fiasco.....The first quote was aprox $1,400 00. I asked them to please take out the permit, and they quoted me another $650 00 additional for this. !!!! I contacted the City of Pompano Beach Permit Dept, and was informed that the permit cost for my job would be around $44. 00, but as they had a minimum, it would be $60. 00. !!!!. I got back to Home Depot with this info, and they told me that was what they charged...........I refused to pay this, and offered them $300 00 for this service and they agreed. They had a couple of foreign 'Bruisers' tear out the old tiles.....these men also tore out most of the baseboards, and tore off some of the wallpaper around the base of the doorframes, which I photographed.... In the middle of removing the old tiles, they suddenly produces a long level, place it on my kitchen floor from which they had not cleaned the debris, and informed me that the floor was uneven, and that I should contact the store. I did this, and was informed that to level off the floor. would be another $750. 00. additional to the original quote and obtaining the permit. I refused, as the previous tile job looked fine. I did chip off a couple of small concrete hi spots with a concrete hammer, checked the floor for level, and all appeared O.K.
Subsequently, I called Home Depot, and told them I was ready for the installation. The tile man arrived, and I asked him if he was to re-hang my louvered doors etc, which the previous wreckers had removed when they tore out the tiles, prior to his commencement ? .....His comment to me was "Did'nt I have a handyman that could do that ? I told him to come back the following day, and rehung the doors, and repaired the door frames, baseboards, and torn wallpaper myself.
The very next day the installer started, bringing the supplies etc. He did a good job with the tiles, but when he had finished, he dropped a tool and cracked a tile in the center of the kitchen floor, and had to return the following day to replace same with new. Having finally finished, I saw that he had a couple of boxes of tile, and two bags of setting cement over, so I said to him, that I hoped he was going to take this overage with him when he left.......He retorted, that he did not do this, and that I would have to return these things to the store myself for a refund !!!!........I subsequently did slep these articals back to the store........I was mad at having to do this, and had several words with the Service Desk relative to their manner of completing and closing out an installation contract.......This whole scenario was very distressful to me, as I had expected a much more professional job from a large company. Finally for my aggravation, they gave me a Gift Certificate of $100. 00.
I had much correspondence with a Mr. Frank Blake. Chairman and CEO of the company, at his Atlanta, GA office, and also with sundry other individuals of the company, which I would be most happy to furnish upon your request. In closing, I can only say that I would never, ever use these people again, particularly with regard to the price gouging that is apparent, and I would caution any other prospective customers to keep their eyes open.
I Remain, Sincerely Yours, Captain: A. J. Gibbons. Thanking You.
From that point, I thought the roof was sealed and a rain storm came. My living room now had small ponds on the floor. The local store manager was great and gave me buckets and a tarp. A few phone calls later, I was told the roofer would be back out to take a look and the project manager would stop by. They all came and got the drips to stop. Hopefully the rest of this project goes smoothly.....lets we what Home Depot does to rectify the issue. I mean, my couch did get wet, I had to move the furniture and I had to clean up they mess. I got an apology, but that doesn't not make me so sure about using them for future projects. Maybe I should try Lowes!
UPDATE: It is now a few months since the project was done. I have had Home Depot come back out twice for leaks and was promised that I would not have anymore issues. Well, a rain storm came through yesterday and another one today. It was no surprise that I see water coming down my wall and dripping from the roof. I called the customer service line ad was told someone would be out by Thursday. I apologized to the call taker and told her that this is unacceptable service and that I should not be having these problems. She responded by saying the last issue was closed out and was not deemed a roof issue. I asked how could water coming in from the roof not be a roof issue. She claimed that a plumbing line could be leaking. I didn't want to make her feel stupid but I would first have to have plumbing lines in that section of the house, in which there are none, and it would be odd that a plumbing line would only leak in the rain.
Well, she took all my information and then asked me another stupid question. She wanted to know if I still lived at the same location. I wanted to tell her I moved to a new house and wanted them to fix the new roof, but she might take me seriously. I doubt anyone from Home Depot will read this nor will they care, but at least someone else might be able to sae stress and pick another vendor.
