Let?s start with the demo. They were delighted when we told them that we wanted to donate anything that could be used: cabinets, doors, appliances, etc., and they arranged for Restore to pick them up. When I got to the condo, I noticed a fan was missing, another was set aside in a back room, and the donation receipt was made out to Chapman & Co. I asked Daniel about that, and he said that he?d taken home the fan, and when they demo, they feel entitled to all the demoed items. So heads up on that! We did correct the receipt. Barney and Daniel bill themselves as very detailed oriented, present and on top of all aspects of a renovation. We found that that often wasn?t the case. For example, they didn?t give the plumber the specs, and he installed the wrong tub valve. Had we not caught that, there would have been a big mess when it was time to install the trim. Another example: after repeated assurances that the kitchen was wired for the appliance installation, it turned out that the wiring was all wrong, and the electricians had to rewire with the appliance installers standing there. These are not minor oversights! Barney and Daniel scheduled the subs, but they did not supervise them or involve themselves with the details. And in the middle of our project, they took another big job and basically were unavailable. It was very frustrating. Even the scheduling was problematic. The schedule Daniel gave us for the last six weeks made NO sense, so we revised it, and they followed our outline. When at the end of the job, we raised some of these concerns with Barney and Daniel, they got both defensive and aggressive and said they?d done an excellent job, and we were lucky to have them as our contractors. If only their ability, their skill, and their attention to detail matched their confidence and self esteem! Don?t be fooled by all their sweet words and earnest reassurances. Unless you can and want to manage big portions of your construction project, these are not the contractors for you.
