I would first like to say that this was a simply wonderful experience. I feel that the veterinary care and the kindness of the staff is excellent. The charges are the most reasonable I have ever encountered in 50 years as a pet owner in south Georgia/North Florida. This makes everything worth it.
The following comments are not criticisms. They are only WARNINGS for future clients so that you don't get your blood pressure up. Just BE PREPARED to keep calm and be patient. Meditate, pray, or whatever it takes. It is worth it for your pet's sake and your pocketbook's sake!
The three things to be aware of: 1) The wait will be incredibly long. At least an hour. 2) The miscommunication is dumbfounding. Three people on staff will tell you three different things until you've come full circle back to the first person. But then if you keep your cool, they will be reasonable and you'll work it out, more or less. 3) There is basically a lack of any discernible organization of any kind. (Also, all of this pandemonium is accompanied by the expected pulling, barking and talking and commanding and pushing and shoving.)
I had been warned about the wait, and so I was prepared for a very long wait the first time I went in as a "walk-in." I allowed three hours and brought my kindle.
I am warning others, because I was not warned about the three ring circus atmosphere. I immediately noted that things do seem to be poorly organized. Also the staff and I seem to have a bit of a communication problem. Not as in not agreeing with each other. Rather, as in I can't understand a word you are saying. (I was born and raised in Georgia. Have a college degree, speak up clearly and have no speech impediments.) But I quickly realized I was not the only one who seemed confused by just about everything.
I found that I was confused by not knowing exactly what I was supposed to do and when. On my first visit, I was ushered into a back exam room. About 30 minutes later, a technician spotted me there, and asked who I was and why I was there, and then apologized and said I had obviously "been forgotten" (her words.) After the initial exam (and shots, which I requested), I was pleased when the vet tech suggested the teeth be done at the same time the polyp surgery was done to save time and money. However, I was confused when she (the vet tech) told me I should tell the ladies in the office that I wanted to have teeth done at the same time as the polyp surgery. I went to the ladies in the office and explained this, but they said that they did not do that scheduling and that I would need to arrange the double surgery with the veterinarian. When I waylaid the veterinarian in the hall, she of course was busy and said I would have to arrange all that with the surgical tech. When I stopped the surgical tech, she said the ladies in the office would call me about it. When I told her that the veterinarian had just said that I should arrange it with her (the surgical tech), she said that she would call me that evening. At least this is the way I remember it. Is it always that disorganized?
But what a wonderful surprise! There evidently was no "office visit" charge for the exam at all! And the shots and heartworm meds were much lower even than the mobile vet that goes around Jax on the weekends! Wow! Sorry, I can't remember the exact amount.
As promised, the surgical tech did call me and arrange the surgery and was very pleasant and answered all the questions I had. She was able to double book the surgery so that teeth and polyp could be done at the same time.
HOWEVER, more confusion awaited. I was surprised that, although I was told to bring my dog in for surgery at 8 AM, when I arrived, I was told to sign the sign-in sheet and have a seat along with walk-ins, people renewing prescriptions, and others bringing in surgery patients. I had hoped to drop off my dog at 8:00 and get to work by 8:30. I called in to work and said I'd be late, but didn't know how late.
As it was, about 8:25, a third receptionist called my name to the office desk. She made a statement, "Pain med if needed." I had no idea what she wanted. I finally said , "yes?" She said, " Does that mean you want it?" I said "Okay." Then she said, "Blood drawn to do lab studies." (or something similar). Again, I didn't know what she was asking but quickly said okay to that, too, since I certainly didn't object. I never knew what that was all about. I would think if they are asking my permission to prescribe meds and/or do blood tests, they would simply explain this and ask me to sign a form. More confusion.
I had to sit down again and wait a few more minutes and then was called in to the exam room about 8:30. Nobody took my dog or took her leash, so I stood by the exam table. I thought maybe the veterinarian had questions for me, but all they did was draw blood and give my dog a pre-op injection. Then I asked if I could go. It was now about 8:40. Everybody looked at me as if they didn't understand why I was even in there. I was told she'd be ready in the afternoon and that the office would call me.
I was called about 9:45 and was told she was fine and that I could pick her up any time. I went to the bank and drew out $250.00, just in case. Needless to say, when I got there, there was another sign-in sheet. I quietly waited about 25 minutes in the waiting room and didn't even read my kindle, but enjoyed all the pets and all the pet stories people were sharing. When I was called up to the desk, again I was delighted to be told it was only $126.00. The receptionist even gave me back $2.00. I apologized and said, " I thought you said $126.00." She said, "No, I said $124.00." The lady standing next to me said, "No, you definitely told this lady $126.00." Who cares? At this point I was ready to invite everybody in the building over for a barbeque!
I strongly recommend this veterinary practice. When it comes to the important stuff, my pets' health and wellbeing, they know what they are doing. I'll let the little stuff just roll on by.
