Hired Bret Jones and island dream home after hurricane Ian flooded my house. Wanted weekly draws of 10k but wouldnâ t give me a real contract just some scribbles on an estimate sheet that was unintelligible. Got 70% of work done had paid all but 3k and told him I would give him the rest when job is complete. Was yelled at and threatened and the hung up on twice. He is a scam artist and this is his mo. Beware and shame on you Angies list for listing this corrupt company
Response from

"This is a great example of why you should not work for friends. This homeowner called us before hurricane Ian was even over to come and fix his damaged house. We jumped right on it even when our own house was flooded. We even repaired a family heirloom to help with his pain from his flooded home. He added additional work on top of the damage to take advantage of the insurance money he thought he was going to get. We gave him a rough cost for the work and continued to work even when his insurance money had not come in yet and he was behind on his draws because he was a friend and we trusted that he would pay us. Formal proposals were given and receipts were also given for his insurance company. When he didn't get as much money as he thought he was going to get from his insurance claim he began to back peddle on the cost and his budget got tight, but we had already demoed and re-framed his bathroom. As we got to the end of the job we tried to come to an agreement and when we showed up to do the work we were told that we would not get paid until the job was complete which was a change to the earlier agreement that we had. We left until a new agreement could be reached. No new agreement could be reached."

Review Island Dream Homes (Bret Jones and Micki Mansfield) July 24th, 2024 We hired Bret Jones of Island Dream Homes for a garage addition project that was estimated to take 2-3 months on May 9th, 2023. We are now on day 442 with no end in sight. The project was supposed to include a Haas 360 Garage Door and a Nova 90 Entry door, both of which have not been paid for or installed despite us paying over 90% of the contracted amount. They want us to pay for these doors, though they are written into the contract. We also were asked to pay the flooring subcontractor, though â polished concrete floorsâ are also written into the contract, and signed by Bret Jones. As of today, besides it being a shell with no doors, we also do not have basic amenities such as AC, power, a toilet, a sink, lights, fans, or finished interior or exterior paint. It has been two weeks since we last saw any workers on site. Bret Jones refuses to come to the house to discuss the project and has resorted to hanging up on us during our last phone call. Will Bret Jones be a â man of his wordâ and honor the contract, or will Island Dream Homes continue to breach their obligations? Only time will tell. We will update this review to reflect whether they ultimately fulfill their promises or not. Stay tuned for further updates, we will update with a new review, if Island Dream Homes upholds their end of the contract.

"All of the items we are being accused of not doing did in fact get done. This homeowner wanted above and beyond what would be considered normal construction and was above what was in his contract and what was allowed in his city. At the start of the job we tried to accommodate his requests and absorb the extra costs, but when he refused to pay a change order for extra electrical work, we felt it was in our best interest to stop his job until an agreement could be met. We sent a certified letter to the homeowner which he refused to accept and an email stating we would finish his job within the budgeted price but he had to pay his change order. The homeowner did not send us a response. The homeowner then closed out our permit and finished the job himself before sending us a reply of termination."

Expensive, and does not like to give anything but oral guesstimate. I just needed simple handrail on 3 mobile homestead and got a huge wooden railing put up instead. The guy who built it was good but railing dwarfs my steps. Cost almost $900 for two rails. Found in FL that the leads from Angie and others are super expensive and are businesses not handymen which is most people need.

Absolutely the worst company to hire to do any work. What was supposed to be a 2 to 3 month job went to 7 months. Once they have most of your money you will wait months before you see them again. Had to threaten to take them to court for them to respond. Owner Bret Jones doesnâ t have a problem contacting you when money is due, but if you call or text when you want them to come back to finish he never replies. Was quoted a price of between $18,000 and $22,000 to do the kitchen remodel depending on what they find behind the wall which had to be removed. There were no issues or load bearing found but still wanted to charge the $22,000. I asked why and he responded angrily and F bombed me on a phone call and how dare I question why he was charging me the most of the quote. In the end in order for us to have a kitchen again I had to do most of his work (plumbing, painting, installation of appliances and tile work) said that I still had to pay the balance of $700 because the job was done. I did not pay because of the work that wasnâ t done by him. What contractor wants most of the money up front before the work is completed. You live and learn. Do yourself a favor and Donâ t hire them!

"We full-filled our contractual obligations to this homeowner, but he felt that we owed him more than what we were contracted for. Therefore; he wrote this review and his accusations are untrue."

Like others here, this scam contractor stole my $4,500 and provided about $150 worth of actual work, ie; sent a guy to paint some red paint on part of my deck to temporarily ?fix? my leak, which did nothing. I have no contract, no plans, sketches, permits, documents; the leak, roof and drywall repairs they agreed to do immediately were never performed, they simply took my money and ran and are now saying they aren?t a ?handyman? company. I have witnesses and have paid others to do the work I paid them to do. They are thieves and liars, and refused to respond for months, then when they do, Bret Jones is a bully and tries to threaten and scare people so he can keep their money. DO NOT HIRE THESE CROOKS!!!!!! Their reputation around the area rings true. I?ll be getting my money back and will do my best to make sure this doesn't happen to someone else. Angi needs to stop recommending this company.
Response from

"We were contracted to design and build an addition. We had numerous meetings with the city and brought in a plansman who started working on this project. In the meantime, the homeowner was having issues with a roof leak and we sent people to try and find the leak and to do a quick patch as they wanted to rent out their house for Air BnB. We spent time and material to attempt to complete this, and after we initially sent workers, the homeowner discovered another leak at another area of the house, but were unsuccessful in the limited amount of time prior to hurricane Ian to locate and fix the leaks. The homeowner then asked to put the remodel on hold, keep any money we used for the repairs and hold the remainder for the future addition when they were ready to start again. We didn't hear from this homeowner for several months until we received a nasty message saying we stole her money. She then filed a dispute on her credit card and toke all the money back including anything owed to us for the work we completed. Her attempt to hurt our company is unwarranted,, unfair, unkind, and false."

Home Owners Beware!!! I hired Island Dream Homes to remove water damaged drywall after my house was flooded by Hurricane Ian. I provided a $7,500 deposit, and I signed an agreement. I decided not to use his services for the repair of my house for various reasons, including my background and reference check. I sent a text notifying the Operation Manager that I will not be using there services, and I requested my deposit be returned minus the services provided. I received a very nasty and unprofessional reply from the owner Bret Jones which I did not expect. His reply confirmed my reference check. Mr. Jones stated they cut checks of Friday and he was going to deduct 5 hours for administrative services, 20% is allocated in the agreement. It has been well over a week and I have not received my deposit. I have filed a complaint with Office of the Attorney General, Office of Professional Licensing, and I have retained an attorney. This why you should complete a background and reference check on all contractors.

"This homeowner used us for his flood insurance. His remaining deposit was returned."

We wanted a double window added to our living area in our new-build CBS house. Other contractors wouldnâ t touch it. Brett and Micki understood what we wanted. Their price fit our budget. Their subs did excellent work. They placed the window so it fit with the existing double window, and it looks like it was built with the house. It took a bit longer than projected but subs are in short supply right now. The end product was worth the wait. We highly recommend Island Dream Homes.

Replaced a large Jacuzzi bathtub that has never been used with a walk-in shower & took out the existing shower. We picked out the tile and pebble shower floor at HD, and had the glass walls custom made. Micki was involved with the project the whole time. We are pleased with the job.
