When I bought the house, I had planned on remodeling at least the so-called "kitchen" as it had only a vertical row of 4 inch drawers and very little else - however, I did not realize that I would be opening a veritable can of worms. I ended up putting more money into the house than I paid for it. I have put $100,000 on the amount that this contractor cost me only because that is the amount that I can document directly to this despicable company. I spent triple that amount repairing and reworking around this company's terrible workmanship - the dominoe effect. I would have been far better off knocking it down and starting anew. But, the full extent of all the issues was never apparent at one time. Just when one problem was solved something else would pop up and there would go another $20,000. What should have been a month or two of work, turned into 9 months of a living nightmare, with me living in the middle of it. I should have known from the beginning when we called the company and asked if there was a way to obtain access to the house plans and we were rudely hung up on. From then on the "nightmare" included hidden mold and mushrooms, electrical lines that led to nowhere, AC ducts that were attached to themselves, balconies that had to be replaced (which in the end was a good thing or we might not have caught the railings that were "nailed" on with rusting nails ) as well as the railings. The staircase inside had to be replaced because the treads weren't the correct depth, the ceilings had to be either replaced or re-screwed as the drywall used was the very minimum width allowed and the raftors were set at the maximum distance apart. All of the sub-floors had to be repaired and re-screwed. In fact, throughout the house, rarely, if ever, was the correct type of nail or screw used, or, used correctly. Such as in the ceiling, incorrect nails were used and only one out 5 actually hit a raftor. The list goes on and on. Numerous things had to be brought up to code. The entire situation was far beyond aggravating, it was extremely expensive and became terribly depressing to live with. I contacted an attorney but was told that I had no legal recourse because the company had not built the house for ME - only the previous owner could go after the contractor. I had the house inspected before I purchased it and have no problems with the inspection or the inspector as most of these conditions were hidden and could not have been found during a normal inspection.
