I had to call to find out that Sunday was just a mistake and down payment could be done later. Again in September before my vacation I had to call and ask again regarding the down payment. They sent the invoice and used the date 7/10/2015 of the previous incorrect invoice. On the day of my departure to Europe the lender called and advised that financing could not be done as Kelly had incorrectly recorded the Notice of Commencement with the County which is similar to a lien and the lender would not accept to be in second place. This notice should have been recorded on 10/05/2015. Kelly had to terminate this notice
and confirm this to the lender. When I called the lender from overseas he had not received such confirmation although Kelly had said that it was sent. From the UPS racking we could see that it was actually sent days later.
During the work on the roof a minor damage occurred to the ceiling on the lanai. One day we noticed that the air conditioner suddenly blew hot air and when I checked I found that the workers had covered the a/c with a wooden board and the hot air could not escape. I informed the workers that they cannot cover the a/c in such way and it needs some 2x4?s so that the air can escape under the cover. I also informed the supervisor who came by a few times. Two days later the a/c malfunctioned again and I found that they had used 2x4?s but then they had covered everything (incl. the board) with a huge plastic tarpon down to the floor which looked like a big bubble and again the hot air from the compressor could not escape. I reported this again to the workers and the supervisor. When the workers were finished they just left and nobody came for a final inspection and walk-around. I would have expected to see the Project Manager in between and on the last day but I saw him only once when he came for the estimate. I sent emails which remained unanswered and finally wrote to the President that there were still open items. This took another few days and in the meantime the workers for the new solar on the roof had stepped into big nails in the grass. Finally the supervisor came again and I showed him the open items and he also promised to bring a magnetic sweeper. When the remaining work was finally done they had forgotten to bring the sweeper but I received an email from somebody
stating that everything had been done in a timely and professional manner. I replied that the sweeper was missing, the sales receipts for the last two payments were missing and the release of lien for the purchase of the shingle from their subcontractor. And the worst just had happened as the compressor of the a/c had blown and there was oil and freon all over in the a/c. Repair was estimated at $4000 (unit was 8 years old and new price was $9500). I cannot prove a 100% that this was caused by the two overheating but the a/c people stated that this very well could have been the reason for it, especially as the a/c was not that old. I therefore added in my email that their performance was nowhere near being professional and timely. As expected I did not receive a reply nor the sweeper or sales receipts. And a second email to the President with the same content also remains unanswered. It is interesting to see how he answers all comments in Angie?s List but not his customers. This is the worst form of communication I have ever seen and that they don't know how to cover an a/c properly makes me wonder..

Kelly had committed to a start date of Thursday July 16th, but waited until the evening before (5:30 pm) to notify me that they would not begin until the following Monday. This was only the beginning of my frustration with Kelly Roofing as I was traveling back to town for this event. What followed was an endless series of missed appointments and unreturned phone calls. Among some other unfortunate incidences that happened were as follows:
- Broken well water faucet because they failed to properly protect it.
- Failing to properly protect my air conditioning air handler during the tear-down process.
- Red stains in my driveway
- Ripped screen in pool cage.
- Not able to fix leaks from my pool cage. After 3 attempts to fix it they made the problem worse and gave up.
- A roof leak after they already finished installing the peel and stick material causing a stain in my kitchen ceiling,
- Upon replacement of rotted facia they used a different type of wood that did not match the original wood. Also in this process facia was installed misaligned to the house so it shows up as crooked.
- They miscounted and overcharged for the amount of facia and plywood used.
- The tile above the garage is crooked, they attempted to fix it but actually made it worse in the process. They came out a third time to address this issue, but now there are cracks in the cement near the ridge caps
- Kelly Roofing did damage to my driveway when they failed to protect it during the teardown process of my old roof. My front lawn also incurred damage during the delivery of the tile.
- To this day they never installed the gutters as promised and agreed to in the contract so i have been without gutters since mid July when they ripped out my original gutters
- I have been sent invoice upon invoice stating incorrect amounts requesting payment for a job that they are aware is still not complete.
It must be noted that most everyone I encountered with Kelly Roofing during this ordeal have been friendly, kind and sympathetic. I have notified Kelly of these issues and have always been told to not worry because they will take care of everything at the end of the job. Many months later and after many attempts to talk to someone in charge to resolve these and other issues I have been met with silence. In fact I have not heard from anyone in months although 3 men showed up unannounced on October 29th to finally power wash the driveway.
As I have never spoken to Ken Kelly I find it rather curious that in light of all the problems and frustrations I have encountered Ken Kelly has failed to respond to my phone calls or messages, although he is quick to publicly respond to reviews here in Angie's List.
"Normally we wouldn't engage in a rebuttal, but this is one where others need to hear the truth. This customer stated, "I love my roof and the work you did, but it took longer than I thought. If you don't give me a discount I'm going to destroy you online." Naturally, the racist and cursing comments to our workers from the customer were left out of the review. To be fair, the summer rains did delay the job. However, we would not give a discount because it simply would not be fair to do so. None of the items listed are true. There were no damages, the roof was installed to a code + design and looks absolutely beautiful. We hope that reasonable people understand what was attempted here and don't hold this review against us. Ken Kelly President Kelly Roofing"
Let me start by saying that this was a very pleasant experience, and I am so glad I chose Kelly Roofing for the roof repair we needed done. I would use them again in the future for sure! Here are the details - and I apologize for the length of my review.
I used Angie's List to identify (4) prospective companies for the repair ... and called them to schedule visits and get the estimates. All four (4) of them came and did their thing ... including Kelly Roofing,
(*) One of them sent a very personal guy who looked like he knew his craft and knew what he was talking about. Went up the roof, looked around, threw me a ballpark estimated of $5.5K, and said he would send estimate via email. I'm still waiting on that one.
(*) Another went up and looked around too. He just went on and on bad-mouthing the original builder and how dumb they were for doing things the way they did. Listen...I call you to estimate the repair and not to listen what other companies don't do, what they should have done, how great you are, etc. I want to know what you are going to do and how much it is going to cost. That one sent a $5K estimate via email but any "surprises" were not included in the estimate. So, if they found that the plywood was rotten under the tile and underlayment, that would be additional cost. Nice! :(
(*) For the 3rd company I had to call them once more to see if they would come and were interested in the job. Although they came...they were already dismissed in my head just for the fact I had to call them 2 times.
BTW ... None of these (3) companies went into the attic - even after I asked them if they needed to go up.
(*) Then came Kelly Roofing - they sent two guys led by Zack Mastro, one of their project managers. I knew the name of the guy that was showing up for the estimate ahead of time because Kelly Roofing sent me a detail email - 48 hours earlier, to let me know that Zack was coming, what date and what time he was going to show up, and what I should expect during his visit. Both of the guys were very thorough and even without me asking, went into the attic to check the roof from the inside. They did not care if it was 95 degrees outside and the attic was hot. They were very professional and limited themselves to discover facts. After they were done, I asked them when I would expect the estimate via email. They said ... "no sir, you'll have it in 10 minutes". They went into their truck and then knocked on my door 15 minutes later. I was expecting a very simple estimate. To my surprise, I got a 4-page printed estimate - and 3 of the pages contained color photos of the proposed repair areas - outside and inside photos ... even with superimposed arrows pointing to where the damage was found, where the water marks were, where water may be leaking into ceiling, etc. The 4th page was the written estimate containing (15) detailed line items showing the specs and description of exactly what they propose to do the repair that was needed. The proposal was so well organized and detailed - it just blew me away. That same night Zack sent me a link to see a video he made of my roof - so I could see better what he was talking about. That was outstanding. BTW, their proposal included repairing 6-7 cracked tiles I had throughout the rook using some special tile adhesive - for free. That was a bonus I was not expecting.
Two days later I sent an email to Zack letting him know I was going with Kelly Roofing. That was on a Saturday @ 8:00 PM. The following day, on a Sunday @ 9:00 PM, I received confirmation that the job at my house was scheduled with a tentative date of 3 weeks later (understandable given the rainy season). I responded that the date chosen was OK - and the rest is history. They kept me informed of every little change in their schedule, called me two (2) nights before they showed up to let me know at what time they would be at my home to start the work and how long it would last, sent me information as to what to expect and how I could prepare (if any preparation was needed). They sent a crew of (3) people that worked two (2) full days (8:30 AM to about 6:30 PM) to complete the job. After the first day of work, they did an excellent job cleaning up and keeping the work site organized. You would NOT have guessed they were working on the roof. During the second day their repair supervisor (Ivan Elias) dropped by and checked progress, quality of work, etc. He spoke with me, explained what they were doing, the status, and asked me if I had questions. That evening they finished the job - and Ivan emailed me detailed pictures of the work done...from start to finish. They were like 40+ pictures. That was impressive.
The three (3) guys from the crew were a pleasure to have around, very professional and courteous. Every once in a while I would come out and ask how they were doing, and they did not hesitate to answer me and tell me what they found or how they were doing. At the end, they cleaned everything ... to the nth degree. The even painted the areas around the repair areas ... and they looked like new.
In closing - I couldn't be happier with Kelly Roofing. Obviously I'm no expert in roof repairs, but given the information they provided, the professionalism displayed, the detailed project plan, the photos (before, during, after), the easy-to-understand explanation of what they were planning to do, etc., gave me peace of mind and I felt 100% confident they were the right choice for the job.
Thank you Kelly Roofing. We appreciate very much your help.
"Thank you so much for taking the time to detail out your experience so others can benefit. We really appreciate the opportunity and thank you for the work! Ken Kelly President Kelly Roofing"
