The proposal was given to us on the spot in a very timely fashion. The owner was professional and appeared extremely experienced. We were off to a great start. Then it went downhill from there and quickly. While we were held up due to termite problems and needed to tent the house, that had nothing to do with our dissatisfaction with this company. We had the property tented immediately and proceeded with the roof.
The initial stages of the process went as expected. No real problems there. But, when the tile we chose was delivered in batches, we were told it was coming to the house and it never did. I had to follow up with the owner to ask if the tile was still on track for delivery. When the tile finally arrived, the truck was unpacked in a hap-hazard manner with plastic left behind all over our driveway, The tiles were set but the tile setters failed to realize that our solid colored tiles were anything but that. Apparently, since they were from different batches, and we needed to reorder so many due to breakage, some had gone through the effervescent process and others had not. In layman's terms, our roof had obvious areas that were light and dark. We told the owner immediately, but he didn't come out to stop the tile setters. After repeatedly saying he would come, he finally did and then agreed there was a problem that he had not experienced before. He had to call in the tile representative for assistance. The rep came out and suggested a tint be put on, at the expense of the rep, to even out the tone of the roof. We never thought we would need to tint our brand new roof. We were told numerous times that this tint was beneficial to the tile and would improve the color as well as help prevent the build up of mold and mildew. The roofer told us we were so fortunate the tile manufacturer agreed to help us with this problem, even though it was their responsibility in the first place. If were weren't happy, then we would figure out another solution. So the tint was put on, finally. Although we had to once again keep calling to have the sides of the roof done since they missed them the initial time.
Then, with the tint in place, our chimney started leaking water inside. This is the reason that prompted us to do the entire roof to begin with. Frustrated beyond belief, the company was quick to respond to our call and came out to our home. They suggested it was a problem with our original bricks and that maybe they should be stuccoed to seal in all of the holes. Not wanting to have to take away the look of our brick chimney, a brick sealer be used. Of course, the roofer failed to come up with this idea -- we did. Not sure why we had to come up with that suggestion since the roofer does this type of work a lot - I'd imagine.
Now fast forward 3 months - yes 3 - and we were never even told the roofer was putting in for the final inspection. We passed and were contacted to provide final payment. We would liked to have been told when the inspection was happening and to be asked how the chimney was holding up. We were totally inconvenienced, annoyed with the tiles not being even in color and then still putting coverings over our mantel when it rained in case the chimney leaked. Forgot to mention we had already gone ahead and replaced the entire drywall around the ceiling near the chimney before the chimney leak was found. Since the repair was already done and then the chimney leaked, it would have to be re-done. We expressed that the company should compensate us for that expense - as they initially agreed they would when they came out to see the situation. Now, they don't feel they should have to pay for this too. They also initially agreed to pay for our ac handler to be cleaned after we had to call a technical to come out due to roofing materials that had gotten down into the blades and caused the unit to shake and make a terrible noise. All of this headache and we are being asked to man up and pay the final payment and disregard the ac handler cleaning and drywall expense. I would have thought instead the company would understand our frustrations and agree to do whatever in reason they needed to in order to make us satisfied.
Now, four months later, our chimney area is leaking once again. The roofer claims this is not a roof issue and not their responsibility. We have sent them final payment, after we received a certified letter asking us to provide payment, and now have to contact a general contractor or chimney repair company to fix our chimney. Overall, we are extremely dissatisfied with Caston Roofing and would never recommend them to anyone. Two words - consumer beware!
