Let me just give you a little background. I take care of my elderly parents (both on S.S.), who are both handicapped, my nephew who has autism and my sister who has a seizure disorder. We are in a 95 degree home all day long. I am unemployed as well.
Hearth & Home shows up. I flew out the door to speak to Rick as soon as he arrived. Let him listen to videos I recorded so he can hear the problem. He assured me they would not help. So I shrugged that off. Then by brother-in-law arrives and starts talking to Rick. So I run out because Nick, my brother-in-law, does not know all the details. Rick duplicates the problem for sure and says its the fan motor. Nick says to him, "Then you can just oil it right? cause you can clearly see its still spinning" and Rick assures us, "No." The truth, the fan did spin and would shut down but it took a really long time for it to shut down. It kept spinning. So Nick was thinking that it could be salvaged. Rick assured us, no.
So Then he drops the 399.00 price on us to replace the fan motor. So my parents, DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY and both on S.S income but say yes because we are all melting and they feel desperate. Nick says, "I think you should shop around." My mom says no charge it and this guy is listening to this. So my mom gives him the go ahead because again in 95 degree home or hotter.
I ask Nick can you go ask him the part name. Rick gets a little bent out of shape being asked that question and starts complaining about time being money and how he can just pack up his truck and leave. So Nick comes in and tells me what is going on. My elderly parents who are desperate for cool air just want it fixed. So I ask Nick to get him to do the work because my parents felt they had no options. I did not appreciate a threat from Rick packing his truck and leaving because I ask a part name and get told people do this out of there garage and he won't match anyone's price.
Since Rick did not want to give us the part name I went and did research while he was fixing the unit. What I found was nothing short of upsetting. Especially when a consumer feels stuck and the person giving the service makes them feel they can't ask questions.
I found that when a fan stops running its usually the capacitor and they can be changed easily. I found that the cost was astronomically low. If it was the fan motor also that is also low. Rick did not tell us anything about the capacitor until after the work was done. Strange to me that I find that is the fan does not spin try to start spinning-it yourself and if it starts its the capacitor. This is google search I did with very detailed instructions.
Here is a review I found and I am posting it so others do not make the same mistake we did. This review below is not from Hearth and Home, but it gives a glimpse on cost and doing it yourself. It would of been better for us to do this ourselves. We are in no place to even make a charge like this. If you plan on using this company I would ask for a person who lets the consumer ask as many questions as possible and I would do my homework. I feel ripped off and very sad. If you all new our financial situation and to get ripped off like this is just upsetting in itself. Praying to my Heavenly Father for justice and He has the final say.
Review from another AC Company:
(Commenting to an older post about home repair do-it-yourself) Older
post mentioned paying a repairman $548 to replace fan motor in home a/c
unit. I replaced my fan motor last night in my home a/c unit myself.
Took about 30 min. Motor cost $78 at Grainger, part # 4M205. 208VAC/1Ph
1/4 HP 1.8A 1075 RPM with 1/2" shaft. Replaced capacitor too, cost $5. I
did not pay any repairman to come fix it. It makes me sick that these
repairmen get away with charging outrageous prices for simple work and
they are calling you an idiot at the same time. No wonder our country's
economy is bad. People want too much money for too little work.
Americans are lazy in my mind. (Except me, of course ) One final
comment: make sure you disconnect power and discharge your capacitor
(stick screwdriver across leads) before removing old motor. Follow the
wiring diagram on the new motor and make sure you set your fan blade
height the same as the old one.
