Terrible! - called in for info - no answer for 1 week; finally Diane called back saying her phone line was broken - John came by to check for work on Thursday; was supposed to get a quote on Friday; did not get - called back Friday and Monday to get quote; left msg for Diane; no call back - Diane calls back Thu and give me quote for $200 labor and they will go and get the material at HD - we are now 2 weeks late but I agree for following Friday in 7 days since John has no availability before - Diane calls on Tuesday wondering about me leaving msgs since we had agreed John would come Friday; I tell her that she is now responding to a message dating from 1 week back! - Friday comes; John is sick can't come; Diane calls and suggest following Tuesday after Labor Day; I agree - Tuesday come; no John; leave msg; Diane calls bk end of he day and tells me I had said Wed; I'm really surprised by this considering my project is now 3 weeks late because of 1st Class Handyman - John comes in Wed... with Chris his son So, how was the work with these 2 great specialists in the house? - get 30' linear and 1 small piece of wood 1/4" thick to screw against a door jamb from Home Depot; patch a few holes in the ceiling and do some paint touchup in the kitchen; move 3 toilets and washer/dryer that were temporarily stored in bedrooms and living room respectively to the garage this is a job that could easily be done by 1 man and that is exactly what happened. John works; Chris looks and submits opinions. So much so that when John is patching the ceiling for 2 little screw holes coming from a pot holder hanger I took out, Chris is down the ladder and directing his father as to how to apply mud on 2 holes the size of dime: "a little bit to the left.. less in the middle; ok.. ok.. yea maybe a bit in the right" Then I almost had to fight Chris when him and his father insisted I did not need to put an extra piece of wood in the door jamb and they just had to "readjust" the door. Fortunately, his father suddenly understood that I would not accept them just "adjusting" the door if they wanted to get paid so Chris piped down. then John painted the door jamb which meant he painted the outside wall with it because he did not put any blue painter tape so it really looks bad and I had to fix it myself once they left. as for the kitchen touch up, he forgot to touch up alongside the cabinet and the high bar which was work I had shown when he had passed by the house, as well as repeated in the morning. I trusted the work had been done when I paid and I did not check. My bad. It was not and the grout is still there: dark grey on the beige wall. then there are the baseboards: it was to replace 30' linear feet on a room that is about 60' so they painted the new baseboard and it looked like c*** because half the room baseboard looked old. I asked them to paint the extra 30' and also to help me move 3 old toilets to the garage as well as a washer/dryer 20 feet. Moving the toilets took Chris 15 minutes - except for 1 toilet his father helped him with; moving washer/dryer 20 feet with the both of them working! took less than 10 minutes; painting the extra baseboard 20 minutes: total 45 minutes. and I was charged $75 extra. When I pointed out John advertised his services at $35/hr he stated that there are 2 men. So why is it that only 1 guy works at any point in time? I don't mind paying $70/hr if the work is really 1 hour with 2 guys working, but if only 1 guy works at a time and it takes 2 hours to do the work of 1 hour that is really quadrupling the charge Oh yes! and what about material from Home Depot. $90 for that. $90 ?! I passed by Home Depot to check and it's $0.87/linear foot and the small wood piece was $1.90. With a bit of nails - because John did not screw the board on the door jamb as requested, he only nailed it - do the math. I bet no one will get to $90 material - with no material bill shown from Home Depot of course! How could he show material bills that would amount to $20-30 max with him charging $90? My recommendation: NEVER HIRE! UPDATE ======= I failed to see how they were refused the opportunity when they came to visit and check the work to be done first before executing, and were also responsible to buy the appropriate material to fix all these issues.
Response from 1ST CLASS HANDYMAN SERVICES INC

"It seems there is quite a bit of confusion regarding the work performed. Setting up the initial appointment took time due to the member's balancing work while preparing to vacate one house and move into another. My messages would be returned around 5 or 6 in the evening, so scheduling was delayed. Both men worked the entire time, with Chris doing odd jobs that the member requested, without any additional charges. The other issues addressed are inaccurate to a degree that I'm not sure where to begin addressing. Any difference between paint colors, while unfortunate, could not be avoided as the client provided the paint. The door was fixed to the customer's specifications - however, the fix is quick and we would have preferred to have done the work for a permanent solution but were refused the opportunity. This miscommunication is very unfortunate but 1st Class Handyman always performs the highest quality of work and guarantee satisfaction."

Thought they'd be great based on Angie's List reviews and their initial professionalism, but was very disappointed. As it was I had to start calling handymen and getting quotes all over again.

1st Class Handyman performed work for our business previously and the jobs went well. We asked them out again provide a quote on a mobile home renovation. Having recently been sued we told them that we would need them to furnish both liability and workman comp certificates. They indicated this was fine and when we provided them our indemnity agreement they also said that it would be no problem. After waiting many days for a quote and getting no response to our phone calls, we got a call telling us, in an unprofessional manner, that our requirements were too much for them. We lost time getting this job started and wasted energy following up with them. Very disappointing.

The only thing I didn't like was the amount that he charged me for labor. He charged $70 an hour for two of them. The other person was just a helper. He was ready, early in the morning every day.

He performed all of this work, while I was out of town. He painted the trellis before he installed it. His work was excellent and he cleaned up after he was finished. We were very satisfied with his work.

I found him on Angie's List and I think that he is a very fine carpenter. I needed the job done in record time, and he was up to the task. He treated me very well.

They were fantastic. They came when they said they would, went right to work and I had no problems with them. They were extremely clean while performing the work, they even vacuumed the closet for me before they left. They were very nice and pleasant people. Their price was quite reasonable. I am going to have them back to do some work for me.

I love this company! I've used John a couple of times now and have been extremely pleased. Whenever the "little projects" build up around the house and my husband just can't get to them in a reasonable amount of time, I call 1st Class Handyman Services. They always answer or return calls promptly, set up estimate visits to accomodate my schedule, schedule the work quickly and complete the work in a timely manner. John is very good about cleanup and his work is outstanding. I will use, and re-use this company. John is my "go to" guy.

It was satisfactory work that was done. In most of the cases, I was not here when he was working, so he was very professional and kept to himself most of the time. His work was definitely satisfactory, but I had an immense amount of problems from the woman who answered the phone.

I called John on Monday and he came over two days later to put up my Christmas lights. He also fixed my outside faucet for me because it was leaking. I'd never put up lights before so he was kind enough to explain and show me how to do it in the future. He also told me how to store the lights so they would be easier to put up next year. The price was fair, and I really appreciated the promptness and help he gave me. I've used him before, and I will definitely use him in the future. The lights look great!

I waited until 9:30 this morning and no one showed up. I called and complained to 1st Class Handyman this morning and she wanted to make excuses. I'm not pleased at all. There's water on the floor. I'm calling another handyman company to come out. I'd never use this company again.

The work was well done and I was pleased. He gave me a price and told me that if he ran in to any problems he would have to charge me more, I didn't notice any issues nor did he mention any but for some reason he did charge me more. Other than that working with him was fine.

Upside was that work performed was affordable, efficiently done, pleasantly executed. Downside involved challenges in scheduling, however, 1st Class promptly kept in good touch until we could agree on appropriate scheduling.

I was very pleased with 1st Class Handyman Services. It was a couple, a husband and wife team. She did the scheduling and all communication as far as when they would arrive and when they would be finished. She also made sure I was aware of any delays that might come up. They did an excellent job of cleaning up and doing what they promised when they promised.

The original quote was $75 for the first layer of paneling with the understanding that it would be more if I didn't like the 2nd layer. I didn't like it so he only charged $50 more to remove the 2nd layer and patch up holes. He came on time and had his wife call me ahead to let me know he was on his way. The whole job only took a couple of hours and he cleaned up.
