He told me he couldn't get the hinges off because the rusted screws were stripped or would strip. He said they would have to be drilled out and would take a long time, and labor would be $150. He did not have the tools to do that. Then the new hinges and special screws would be around $60. He told me it would be cheaper to get another used set and get rid of this set. He didn't charge me to come out and tell me this.
I completely believed him and started looking for a new set, put the old set up for sale with a description of the problem, lost my shirt because it was a really high quality set except for that hinge. This is a super-capacity stackable Frigidaire washer and dryer that worked perfectly except for the bent hinge.
After I bought another used set and had installed, with a new outlet to fit the different type of plug, a. random neighbor Mom wandered by and asked if she could take a look at the busted set sitting under my carport. It took her less than twenty minutes to take the hinges out, straighten the bent one, find new screws in my garage, and fix the entire thing. The door opened and closed just fine. The whole thing was perfect again. Unfortunately she came by AFTER the new set had already been installed I was devastated. The new used set doesn't clean as well, used tons of water and detergent, and the dryer has to go through 2 cycles to dry anything. The stupid advice given by A and S Appliance Repair cost me a lot of money.
If random neighbor Mommy can fix this thing, I should be able to count on a professional appliance repairman to do it. She was just dinking around while our kids played. I have no way of knowing if A and S do this type of thing a lot, but that is what happened here and the sheer laziness of it is astounding. I absolutely do not recommend this company. I will add that I emailed the owner and asked to discuss things before I put up a negative review, but he never got back to me, obviously doesn't care, so here you go. I am of the school that says not to say anything at all if it isn't nice, but the whole point of this site is to help people find good service people and avoid bad ones. I would have appreciated knowing about the low quality of service before I called A and S.
I called A&S Appliance early this week and they came out the same day (we are in Seffner, so it was on their way back to Plant City at the end of the day). Art inspected the unit and told us the bad news: that we'd need to replace a couple of little circuit boards (they send/receive the infrared signal and act as part of the switch) and the main ice maker unit needed to be replaced. The circuit boards were no longer working, and part of the ice maker assembly was corroded.
He showed me a website that has all the parts and was pretty sure he could get the parts a little cheaper than that. My Angie's List $40 deal took care of the initial visit and diagnosis, and they only charged $30 additional labor to come back out with the parts today and get everything working.
He and Gabriel called each time when they were on their way, were super friendly each time, and were great at explaining how the parts work and what was being done and why. They showed us the places where the corrosion was happening, and ensured that everything was working before leaving.
The total came to $313.50 (plus tax), but as stated, the vast majority of that was parts. Art told us when he first diagnosed the problem that unfortunately on our model of fridge, those little circuit boards are spendy! But it's a 9-year old fridge, so we're happy that it's healthy again!
Would not hesitate to use again and recommend.
Initial contact was great, Art seemed very knowledgeable and appeared to have an idea of the problem just by my detailing the issues we were having over the phone. We made an appointment for him to come by and he showed up when he said he would. We had plans to leave the country for an extended period of time and needed the repair completed before we left so he arrived early in the week and left telling us he would be by that Saturday morning at the latest with the part to fix the freezer (we were leaving Saturday afternoon). On Friday or Saturday he informed us the part would not arrive in time to complete the repair as promised so we left the country and briefed a dear friend who agreed to see to it that Art had access to the house when the part came in to repair the freezer.
The following week, Art made contact with our friend and scheduled to come by on a Wednesday morning to fix the freezer. Just prior to our friend leaving her house to come to ours, Art called to inform her that the part still wasn't in and would not be able to repair the freezer until Friday. On Friday he met our friend and was very cordial, even stopping to show her kids neat things about the tools he had, ultimately leaving with the repair complete. Our friend paid him the balance of what was owed.
My parents came into town two weeks later to help watch our children while we were out of the country and immediately noticed that the freezer was not working. My dad called Art and explained the issue. Art came out on Thursday of that week and repaired what Art said was a bad weld and said if that didn't hold he may have to come back. The repair lasted about a day until my parents came home to a puddle in front of the freezer. With no time left in their stay to deal with it, they emptied the contents into our freezer in the garage and passed the problem on to another friend of ours.
Two weeks later, as we prepared to return from our trip, our friend agreed to contact Art so we could return to a fully operational freezer in our kitchen. Art arrived on time to meet our friend on both occasions to diagnose the problem which appeared to be a faulty part (not his fault). After 7 days of waiting for the replacement part to come in and failing to take initiative in updating our friend on the status of the part, Art finally arrived (on time) with the replacement part on Saturday (the day we were flying home). Art completed the repair while our friends were at the house cleaning up for our arrival but not without asking one of our friends to go ask the neighbor to borrow a tool that he needed and didn't have with him. He ended up borrowing a tool of mine and left it out on the counter along with the faulty part and a nice mess on the floor for our friends to clean up.
Art is a nice man; very friendly and knowledgeable but I would not do business with him again. He did fix the freezer and didn't charge anything for the additional visits which was the right thing to do, but I was not impressed with the time it took to get parts, the lack of follow up with our friend and the state of disarray he left his work area once the repair was completed. Luckily we were out of the country for this fiasco. Between the waiting for parts, repairing bad welds and faulty parts, I can't imagine what life would have been like without a fridge for that long.
One big advantage is that A&S is open week nights until 7. This is great for people who wrk 9-5!! I would definitly use this company again. As a matterof fact - they are now entered into my Iphone!
