Dave Hill never got back with me either via phone or email, I saw no reason to recontact him as I had given him my information. If he wasn't interested in doing the job then he should have told me right then and there, or even call to say he wasn't interested, but to totally just ignore a prospective client is not doing good business. If you live in the Leesburg ,Lady Lake, or Villages area I highly recommend NOT to hire him. All he needed to do was to make a call or email and say get someone else
Description of Work: I choose Dave Hill as I have seen him in the local area and needed the services of a handyman. We met with Dave Hill Handyman for some tile issues in the tube area of a rental. I gave him some ideas of what we were looking for since it was a rental, as well as replacing the soft wall and the tile. He took those ideas down and said he would check them out to get pricing and compare costs. I gave him my phone number and email address to call or send the estimates to me. This was back in late June of his year

.He came in on time and I gave him the thermostat that needed to be installed and programmed. It was one of those that has several events. He attached the thermostat to the wall but said he was having trouble programming it. I gave him the instruction book and he politely said he needed to go to his truck. I never saw him again. He just drove off. He never charged me for the visit but than all he did was take the old thermostat off the wall and screw in the new one. Would I use his services again? Not in this lifetime. In the end my husband was the one who finished the work.
Description of Work: Called to put in a multi-date thermostat

Found his name on a truck when we got our car serviced, Came to the house and showed him a closet that needed repair and a door that needed weatherstripping repaired/replaced. Spoke to him about several remodeling projects that we wanted done in the house(2 bathrooms/kitchen/painting etc) He assured us he could accomodate our needs. We waited a few weeks to have the closet done(3wks) did an ok job. We paid him on the spot and didnt question the price. I talked to him in detail about what I wanted done..purchased ceiling fans, paint, picked out vanities, tile etc and he kept telling me he was doing a remodeling project. He apologized and promised he would be finished the next week.........this went on for more than two months...then he just stopped answering my phone calls......... the job certainly would have been profitable for him so he was either very unprofessional or in over his head..........very disappointed...........wouldnt recommend him, Why cant people do what they say they are going to do? There are so many other people out of work.........people who need the work..............where are those people? Those are the people I want to give MY money to

It turned out very well and I trusted them to be in my house without me there so they were trustworthy. I thought they were a little expensive but I will use them again in the future.

This was a lot more money than we had anticipated. When you add in the A/C company and the electrician, this project was very much over budget. The painting in the bedroom was substandard. The rest of the bedroom was painted with a napped roller; the part Dave did was done with a smooth roller. That was very unprofessional when it came to matching up a paint job. The floor in the living room where it was replaced now squeaks. I guess our options were weak floor or squeaking floor. The fact of the matter is, that if I went into a home and caused a problem I would at least want to make it right. Dave did not feel like he had a part in this. If the $1705, was mostly material I could understand there would be no "wiggle" room. We did not expect Dave to work for free, but to discount the bill a couple of hundred dollars would have been fair. We had inquired at our first meeting about some additional work. He never mentioned it when we paid him. To me, that would indicate that he knew he had not done right by us. On his truck it says that he is licensed and insured. I called Lake County and he is not licensed as a contractor in Lake County. Other businessmen have said that with the electrical problem, they would have turned it in for their insurance to handle. Dave just took his $1705 and left.
Description of Work: My husband and I purchased an older mobile home several years ago. We have been having work done on it as we can afford it. We found some old termite damage in one bedroom while repairing windows. We took off the old paneling & insulation to the outside wall and replaced the damaged 2X4s around two windows in a corner so a part of two walls were involved and a small portion of the ceiling. We also had particle board in some of the living room floor that had absorbed moisture through the years and was deteriorating to a point that those sections needed to be replaced with plywood. Some of that floor had been replaced before we bought this home. When Dave came in to give us an estimate, the bedroom being already demoed, was easy to see what needed to be done. The living room floor was carpeted so it was a question to how much would have to be accomplished. The living room had to have heavy furnishings moved, carpet removed, and then the portions of the floor replaced. The bedroom work was estimated to be $350 plus $90 in materials (we supplied the paint). That took two half days. On the second day, they started the living room. All the furniture was moved, the carpet and padding removed and then we could see exactly what needed to be done. Dave and his helper cleaned up after themselves and cut up carpeting and padding putting it out for the garbage. We were very pleased with that. BUT, what we failed to understand that this was costing us $50 an hour. We understood that we would be paying $25 an hour for labor, but didn't know that we were paying for every person here $25 an hour per person. Not having a written estimate with the terms spelled out was something we will never repeat. When part of the floor was removed, they told us that our air conditioning duct work was incorrect. We had had a new A/C put in 3 years prior. They told us that they would call the company that put it in because they knew them and the A/C company would fix the problem. My husband asked specifically if the A/C company would charge us. Dave and his helper said NO. The A/C company charged us $82 for service call; Dave and his helper said Sorry we didn't think they would charge you. Sort of a "Sorry about your luck" kind of thing. On the 4th day of being here, in the afternoon, while they were running a compressor inside and a saw outside, they blew the circuit breaker. Dave and his helper said our breaker was old and just burned out. They quit for the day while we were left with four rooms without power. They told us to go get a new breaker and install that night. We did, but knew there was something more wrong when we replaced the circuit breaker and fire flew from it. We did not panic at that moment, thinking all would be solved when Dave and his helper returned the next morning. Dave and his helper said that they needed to finish up and the would use the outlets in the other rooms. And by the way, we probably needed to have an electrician come. We did call an electric company and not one Dave recommended. Dave did finish the floor that day and billed us $1705. That was mostly labor, since we supplied the new flooring, plywood, quarter- round, etc. Dave and his helper came into our home that had electricity that they had used for 4 days with no problems; and walked away with us not having power in 4 rooms. My husband asked him when he paid him the $1705, did Dave feel like he needed to chip in (by way of discounting our bill) for our electrical problem. He said he had nothing to do with our problem. After two days of looking. the electrician said we had a dead short in the living room where they were working. The electrician that has been in business for over 30 years said a dead short does not just happen: that the electrical problem was connected to the living room work. On the bill for the electric work, it plainly states that it is the electrician's belief that the work in the living room caused the problem. So, we also had to pay the electrical company over $400 to run new wiring to the living room so our home would be as good as it was BEFORE Dave.

Response from Dave Hill Handyman and Painting Services
I appreciate the invitation to come to the rescue of your members and resolve this issue. In my business Customer Service is the top priority, everything else will follow. I was & am truly sorry for any hardship experienced by the member & her husband, however I would like to clarify certain points with regard to their complaint letter. *BEDROOM: Quoted cost $350 + $90 materials. Actual time first ½ day= 17 Man Hours (10:26-7:07pm x 2 workers) Actual time second ½ day =9 Man Hours (10:55am-3:13pm x 2 workers) If I had charged by the Hr the 17 Man Hours would have been $650, but I stuck to my original quote (verbal agreement) of $350. This is my company policy. I stress good customer service & satisfaction. This is how I do business. I also discuss the scope of each repair fully to assure the specifics of our agreement. This is necessary to help identify an intricate, custom renovation job for one customer & budget remodel for the next. In question here was the customers’ expectation as to quality of workmanship. I was told they did not expect perfection – paint texture was never discussed at any time before, during or after the work was completed. *LIVINGROOM: Price was agreed to be $25 per Man Hour, plus materials. Member supplied plywood, some 2x4’s & some ¼ round. I supplied Labor, 8 sheets of under-layment, fasteners, some 2x4’s, some ¼ round, transition metal, caulking, etc. To help control the labor expense, members expressed they did not expect perfect work as the mobile home is 35 years old. Per Man Hours @ 25 LR floor was agreed upon by all parties before work commenced. At one point in the day, because I went off the clock to wait for member supplied materials I needed to proceed, I reminded the members they were only paying for one worker at that time (so they knew it was per Man Hour.) The work was completed expeditiously, in a workmanlike manner & looked good when completed. I was paid in full. No other future work was brought up for discussion by member. On the subject of the faulty electric I responded as outlined in the next paragraph: Electric wiring problems. As I was paid in full, I concluded member was satisfied with the job results. *ELECTRICAL WIRING PROBLEMS: Original 1976 wiring, Old breakers, one 20 AMP circuit running 4 rooms + a freezer. I did not drill through or cut or damage any wiring. The SMALL air compressor I used has been employed by me for years in hundreds of jobs & is just big enough to run a small ¼ crown stapler. It is make to run on 110V house current & has never caused any problems. The saw being was BATTERY POWERED. We quit for the day after working 17 Man Hours, 5:58 pm after asking members if they would be okay without electric in that part of the home for the evening. They said yes. *A/C: I feel it is my duty to inform my clients of any problems I observe whether in the scope of my repairs or not. When the members explained when & by whom the A/C was installed, I put in a call to the company for them as a courtesy since I knew the service tech. However, they sent a different tech who charged a service call fee, I found out later. Member should have questioned the service charge due to incorrect installation by that company. *FLOOR SQUEAK: Old repair by others. I tested it; it was sold and did not squeak. Member already stated some of that floor had been replaced before. My work was sold & did not squeak with thorough testing. *LICENSED:YES ~ LAKE COUNTY #77408 *INSURED: YES ~ CYPRESS PROPERTY + CASUALTY # GFL 1018252000081 *PAYMENT OF $1750: Included the $350 + $90 for the bedroom & labor + materials in the Living Room. I also repaired holes in the A/C duct & untangled one duct that we observed to be completely folded over. IN CONCLUSION: Courtesy works both ways. I did my best to complete the job to my customer’s wishes as I understood them. As I was working by the hour, I clocked out whenever I could & made every effort to save them money. Again, I wish events had unfolded better for my clients, but when remodeling & repairing it is not unusual to find out things about your home that were hidden from view. At the end of the day, I made every effort on their behalf. I feel the accusations made by the member(s) are totally unfounded. As a counter-offer to member request they might consider my loss on the Bedroom job due to underbidding by $300. In this case my policy of honoring the original price quote left me with a loss. I would not consider backing out of our agreement. There’s no right way to do the wrong thing.

Customewrs need to understand that if you tell him to do the job slowly, as fill-in work, then it will be slow.
Description of Work: 34 years ago I built a 7.5' high, 10' wide wall unit from 3/4 inch Red Oak plywood. This unit was in my home's family room for 34+ years. This unit has two large drawers, six Plexiglass doors covering three storage areas, and a drop down typewriter shelf. I used Red Oak plywood and applied a medium colored stain that darkened over the years. When my iwfe and I were packing to move to Florida we started looking for someone to refinish the unit. We found David through Angie's list. He offered us two prices - do it good and quickly at price A or do it good and slowly at price B, using the work as fill in between other jobs. We chose price B and Dave delivered the first of the three segments yesterday. We are totally satisfied with the quality and very happy with the price. Dave has two more sections of the unit to deliver and he will then pick up our china cabinet for the same treatment. During the time period I built these pieces of furniture I couldn't take work home with me as I worked for a three letter security agency, respected security restrictions., and wanted to keep my job.
