The quality of the work looks great, and the gentleman that did the work were professional and understood what I needed done. I had previously called the company to get an estimate. I was told that it would be approximately 4 hours of labor, plus parts and the cost would be around $500-550 by Gary.
I am disappointed and confused how the final pricing worked out though. They came to my house about 8:40 but on the paperwork states they got here at 8:30, and the security guard at my neighborhood stated they got here at 8:34. So they got an extra 15min of billing out of me on that. Then they left at 11:15 and got the job done in 2.5 hours (great!!!) BUT the price was still at the $515 mark even though they were done 1.5 hours faster than the original quote. Then they took off a $25 Angie's List coupon which was to be taken off the original estimate of $500-550 anyway.
So the math on the pricing does not add up, and I will be contacting the company about that aspect of the job. I have had this company do work for me on several other occasions and they priced it out very competitively over the phone and were right on with the final bill. Not so much this time unfortunately.
Response from American Electrical Contracting Inc

"Thank you for being a customer. I am 100% certain your pricing issue will be appropriately addressed. The arrival and departure times are verified via GPS. Estimates are exactly that. Unfortunately every home is not the same so the same job varies from house to house. Typically working in older homes is harder because they are better made. When the difference between the estimate and the time for the actual job varies widely adjustments can be made; as noted in many reviews on this site where others stated the job was done for less than the estimate. However, the electrician cannot make that adjustment, it has to be approved by that job manager in the office."

We did this while we lived in the house.  These guys were great to work with!  They were on time, professional, they cleaned up at the end of the day, the holes they made in my sheetrock were small and they patched them for me, and they made sure I had power at the end of the day before they left.  I will be adding an addition soon and I will definately use them again.

"Thank you for your business. Aluminum wiring was used extensively 1970’s as a cost savings measure. However it was later discovered that it was prone to starting fires. For that reason many insurance companies do not want to insure those homes or charge a premium. It is not easy to change the wiring, especially in two story homes but our crews can do that job. As noted, it is expensive but the peace of mind and lower insurance rates, year after year is worth it."

While attempting a DIY ceiling fan install in my newly purchase 36 year old home, I found a rather nasty looking "nest" of wires and seemingly 'overloaded' wiring nuts crammed into the ceiling junction box.  While removing the old light fixture I somehow clipped a wire, and ended up with NO juice to any outlet or light in the master bedroom, closet and bath.  Uh-oh...
As a DIY novice, I was apprehensive this was going to be an expensive repair, and cringed at the quoted $90+ starting point.  My fears were replaced with relief when the AE technician arrived.  He was courteous, fast and very efficient.  He untangled the mass of wires and assured me that nothing was overloaded (even explaining to me what each one was).  He installed longer lengths of wire within the box to make the fan install easier and even bound my black and blue (fan & light) hots together for me.
This was all accompished in about 10 minutes!  Since I'd already paid for 30 minutes (basic fee), the technician, in an attempt to utilize the time already paid for was going to install the fan motor for me, which I thought was a wonderful gesture.  Unfortunately the mounting bracket managed to get lost in the moving shuffle, so we were unable knock that out.
AE could have easily told me I needed hundreds of dollars worth of work and I likely would have beleived them.  Instead, they completed the job quickly and went above and beyond to ensure I was satisfied.  I will absolutely call them again for ALL of my future electrical needs!

These guys are fast, friendly and do great work. They did exactly what they said they would do and charged what they said it would cost. It was a really hot day and being the attic must not have been run. There were no complaints and they went about their business. They took extra care to cover up my car while working in the garage and did not do any damage to the house or surrounding work areas. The final product looks great (as great as electrical work can!) and I am very pleased.
Response from American Electrical Contracting Inc

"Thank you for being a customer and we are pleased that all went well. We understand that many people read a lot of reviews here and depending on when you log in, there still may not be a response to the review below. That is because what this subscriber wrote about will be thoroughly investigated. He is currently out of town and it is vacation season so the response may take a while. Without knowing the circumstances I can speak to the pricing and specification issue. A specification can be created and many products with a wide range of prices can meet that spec in any trade, not just electrical. The differences in the product meeting the specification can range from minor to major. Professionals know what to look for, which manufactures or technologies to avoid and which are worth the money in the long run. The vast majority of our products are recognizable brand names, industry leaders, supplied by many local industrial suppliers with a name, face and number. Quality is extremely important to us because we want you to call us back with you next requirement. Additionally, we do not make money installing inferior products that we may have to service over and over under our one year warranty. Other points to consider are, if we installed a product and it is defective, we have to now enforce that manufacturer’s warranty and remedy situation. If we correctly install your internet purchased product and it is defective you have to remedy the situation with that supplier and be charged for reinstallation. Price is not the issue here because it was good enough for the bank to select us vs. the other contractors. The response issue will be addressed because with cell phones everyone is reachable."

It hasn't gone well, especially for this easy/simple job.  It was fairly easy to get a bid (May 8th).  However, since then my experience with these guys has been less than exceptional.  After receiving a price quote, and getting it accepted by the bank. I called to give verbal conformation of contract award.  No answer.  I then sent an email, no answer.  Called again, no response.  Sent second email, asking if they were still interested in the job...I finally got a response " Yes I want the job I've been out of the office."
Feeling kind of dismayed at this point, and just wanting the job to get done (May 30th), I sent out the contract documents.  Then two days ago, I sent out another email, trying to set up project kick-off meeting.   Still, no response.
Other issues: searching google for the light that was spec'ed, average price per light $120-140.  At the same time, bid stated each light at $286. Even with wire, a switch, overhead and profit, that seems pretty steep. (Labor was quoted at $818)
I thought these guys would be quick, easy and fair to deal with, given the positive responses on here.  I guess not; plus now I have to find another contractor, and the job starts in less than a week. There is simply no way I can go back to these guys...even if this is the neglect of just one employee.

"If I had an explanation for this I would offer one. I will say that we have and at this time, are doing very large multiple month projects for major banks and financial institutions in Jacksonville. That only happens if you are competent, competitive, trust worthy and skilled."

Started with scheduling an appointment via American Electrical Contracting website's request for service.  We received no reply within 24 hours, so I called the number which was answered promptly.  We were scheduled for Thursday, May 23 after 2:00 p.m.  The technician dispatcher called me that morning to say that the technicians had to finish a job from the day before first, but promised that the technicians would be out before 5:00 p.m.  By 6:00 p.m., technicians had still not arrived.  I tried calling the office to find out what happened, but I got the office answering machine as the office closed at 5:00 p.m.  I left a message to call me the following morning.  Did not receive a call back by 9:45 a.m.; so, I called the office again.  Phone was answered promptly.  When I told my story of the no-show technicians and how I had taken the afternoon off to be there, I received profuse apologies.  The lady was very nice and said that she had gotten my voice message.  She explained how the earlier job had run much later than anticipated (after 7:00 p.m.) and apologized that no one had called to let me know.  She  assured me that a technician would be at my house after 3:00 p.m. that day.  I left work at 3:00 p.m. (running late) and received a cell phone call from the technician that he was on the way to my house and would arrive in approximately 5 minutes!  I explained that it would take me a good 35 minutes to get there and he said no problem, he would wait!  He didn't have to since someone else was home.  When I got there, he was already hard at work fixing the ceiling fan.  Ceiling fan is very old; we determined that fixing it was not going to be the way to go.  I had a new fan in the box on hand, so he installed that one.  Works like a champ!  He then moved on to the kitchen light.  Within 5 minutes, he determined that both ballasts were bad and needed to be replaced.  Also, the hot wire was damaged and also needed replacing.  In 30 minutes, there was beautiful, strong light back in the kitchen!  Hurray!  Brian, the technician, is a very courteous, knowledgeable electrician.  He took the time to explain  what needed to be done to perform the repairs and the safety issues involved.  I would definately call this company again to perform electrical work and told Brian that I would call again as I have more work that needs addressing.
So, all in all, while we got off to a bit of a rocky start, the experience ended very satisfactorily.  Sometimes, this type of work takes longer than the technicians expect or they run into unexpected difficulties.  The important thing is they want the job done well and safely, which I appreciate.
Job well done, Brian!  Thank you!

Michael and Scott showed up exactly on time.  They were kind and courteous, and very good at their job.  I am quite sure Michael could install a ceiling fan in his sleep!  It took less then three hours to install three ceiling fans (with lights), and also three additional ceiling lights.  They made sure to show me how all the features worked, and triple-checked said features.  They also checked my smoke detectors and cleaned up after themselves.  Should I need additional work, I will gladly call AEC and specifically request Michael.  Thanks so much!

Response from American Electrical Contracting Inc

"When reading negative reviews, as many often do, you quickly notice that the majority of the negative reviews are not for work but for the apparent lack of response. Let me be the first to say responding to customers is something we all do. The number of non responses are about ½ that noted. Unfortunately if an error was made by the customer the review is not removed or corrected. In all cases we follow up to find out what happened and why did we failed to respond, if that was the real issue. This was a big opportunity and I honestly cannot say why this customer did not get a response. We will investigate and correct what went wrong because we cannot continue to grow without fixing issues."

"Thank you for being a customer. Aluminum wiring was used in the 1970’s as a cost saver to copper. Unfortunately after millions of homes were wired, years later, it was discovered that the aluminum wired homes were more prone catching fire. It was also determined that with the expansion and contraction of the aluminum, terminations on switches, outlets and all other kinds of devices could become lose. Lose electrical connections is a problem which can lead to arching, sparking and sometimes fires. As a result aluminum wired homes cost more to insure. We have solutions to this problem but they can be very costly as the size of the home increases. Additionally, we need to know what your insurance company will accept as a solution. Once your aluminum wiring has been changed or remedied you can get a better insurance rate but this is entirely up to your insurance company. The bottom line is you will have a much safer home. Call us and find out how we can help you."

"Thank you for being a customer. So there is no confusion, this customer had an electrical problem that was found in the ceiling fan. We DO NOT repair ceiling fans. The simple explanation is, most of the time you can buy a new one for the cost of a repair job. Additionally, with a seemingly limitless amount of models, it is really costly and time consuming to find parts. In less time a new fan can be purchased and installed."

The four visits happened over a one month period. Calls were answered promptly, courteously, and professionally. Service was scheduled within one work day.  Electricians showed up when scheduled (within an hour or two), were well trained (I have some electrical training), had the right tools and worked quickly.  Most important for me, they described what they found, what they were doing, what it would cost and what other things might be issues (another contractor had done some poor electrical work).  The first visit focused entirely in the garage.  The next three were in the yard.  I was not charged for the last two visits which were done on warranty.
A very tricky problem was corrected and I was well-handled as a customer.  While their prices aren't low, the quality of the work and the way they back up their warranty make them a very good value.  I have recommended this company to my friends.

Response from American Electrical Contracting Inc

"Intermittent problems, trouble shoot and repair, can be very tricky. We first have to get the intermittent issue to fail while we are present. You know what I mean, things don’t work right when we are not there but as soon as we show up, everything is fine. It’s OK we will not think you are crazy because we understand. Once we find the problem, we can fix it. Sometimes, as in this situation, we have to return. We cannot quote a price for troubleshoot and repair calls because we do not know how long it will take to find the problem. As I stated before, when we find the problem we can fix it and the fixes typically do not take a long time. In a few cases finding the problem is easy but the repair may be difficult. In either case we will take good care of you."

We purchased a microwave that needed a different kind of outlet than the one that our old microwave used. After reading the many favorable reviews on Angie's, we decided to give American Electrical a call. When we called, one of their employees informed us that he has that same microwave, and that he was very familiar with what we needed to have done. He quoted us over the phone and we scheduled the work. A few days later, the outlet was installed at our convenience, and because it was put in without any problems and at a great price, we then decided to let them redo our kitchen lighting. This was done over the course of two days, and it turned out very well. We are very pleased!

I requested quote online and received quick response and phone call from Robert.  The quote was a lot higher than I received from another contractor ($250 for 2 ceiling fans and 5 light fixtures) so decided to go with them instead.  I also liked that the contractor could provide all the services I needed (plumbing, installation of door lock, peephole) so did not need to deal with more than one person.
Response from American Electrical Contracting Inc

"Thank you for contacting us and we understand that we cannot win every job that we quote. American Electrical Contracting, Inc. is a commercial and residential, licensed and insured electrical contractor. We do quality electrical work in all markets that we service. We do not dabble in other trades and do not perform tasks that we are not licensed for. Your home is your most expensive investment and it is extremely important that you take the time to make sure that the people, from all trades, entering your home have the proper credentials. While we may not be the lowest price, you will always receive a fair price, professional courteous treatment, and quality work that we stand behind and a one year warranty."

I called AEC and had no trouble getting an appointment scheduled. Fred and his assistant  arrived, surveyed both the kitchen and the circuit breaker panel and then fully explained what they were going to do. (As an aside, Fred also agreed with GE's installers about the builder's wiring job.) Once they made certain about the circuitry, they cut a hole in the back of the cabinet (and the drywall behind it) above the microwave's mounting location. They then took the original outlet, installed it a safety switch box, then mounted the outlet assembly in the cabinet. After that, they went back to the circuit box and split the circuit (the microwave oven was on the same circuit as the lawn sprinkler system timer/controller).  After that, they corrected the secondary problem, an intermittently working GFI switch. Fred replaced the GFI outlet with a new one, but it comes with a one-year warranty. As with the microwave outlet, he explained and physically pointed out why the circuit worked when it wanted to. Both jobs were finished to my satisfaction in approximately 30 minutes. Both Fred and his assistant were very polite, professional, and really cared about the job that they were doing. I had a $25 off coupon from Angie's List. I didn't grade the "COST" block since I didn't do any comparison price shopping, but the entire job was likely very competitive. In any case, I consider it money well-spent.
Response from American Electrical Contracting Inc

"All the circuits in your kitchen should be on a 20 amp circuit, breaker by itself. In many homes that is not the case. If certain circuits in your home trip, when certain items come on at the same time, that circuit is not wired properly and needs to be rewired. The circuit breaker is a safety device, designed to trip at the first sign of a problem. It is not wise to constantly override that safety device by turning it back on if it has tripped multiple times. The smart action to take is to have professionals, like American Electrical Contracting, Inc. fix the problem, before something regrettable occurs."

"From time to time an appliance may fail. American Electrical Contracting does not repair appliances. However, we may be able to refer you to an appliance repair person or you could find one here on Angie’s List. The issue is when your appliance or air conditioner does not work, you do not know what the problem is. It might not be the appliance or it could be a bad circuit breaker or some other electrical problem. If you call American Electrical we will determine if the right voltage is getting to your appliance or hot water heater. If the voltage is correct you now know that you need an appliance repair person or a plumber or air conditioner repairman."
