Technical Services (TS) has performed all my air conditioning work in my rental condo for 10 years, including the complete replacement of the unit when I purchased the condo. They have been prompt in responding to calls. I have had their maintenance/check-up plan every year during that period. This maintenance plan is a additional item that TS was paid separately for. TS has occasionally tried to refuse to provide the maintenance services that I paid for if a renter was in the condo. At other times, TS has provided such service when the condo had a renter. In any event, my suspicion was that TS wanted the owner there because that was the best way to close a sale for more goods and services. If indeed, TS was selling only maintenance services, it should not matter who lets them in the condo.
This behavior and the non-stop sales efforts that were part of the ?maintenance services? caused me to question their motives. Over time the sales pressure generally has increased. Everything culminated in the last ?maintenance service?. There was a renter in the unit. The TS technician telephoned me and told me that several thousand dollars in work needed to be performed. This occurred in a manner that I viewed as high pressure. Because of my suspicions, I did not have any of the work done by TS.
Instead, I hired a different air conditioning contractor with good reviews from Angie's List for a low cost system check-up. That contractor said there was nothing that needed to be done, and that the air conditioning unit appeared to be in remarkably good condition. He even stated that he did not believe I would not get any payoff from one of one of the TS suggested upgrades.
I called CoreAir and they came out and gave it to me straight. Every unit has mold over time. It was unlikely that it was mold blowing from my ducts but dirt. He said don't put a lot of money into the system but that it looks like a 20 year old system.
The technical services guy called me - which should've been a red flag. Don't ever sign anything without researching.
He said he had a few calls ahead of me so it would be a few hours but he would definitely come out that night. That's understandable, sure. He calls me back at 10:15pm to tell me that he can't make it because he's an hour away and and it was already very late. I was still understanding and said fine and asked when he could come out Saturday. He said we are his FIRST call and he will be out first thing around 9am. Great!
9am came and went (I ended up working from home in the warm house because I wanted to be there when he got there) and he calls me at 10am (an hour late) and says he's just now leaving his house and he will be on his way to my house. I asked him how long and he said it would be an hour because he lives in Cape Coral.
He finally showed up at 12pm (an hour late, again). After about 10 minutes he said our evaporator coil is bad and it would be $3,500 to fix it and he would recommend replacing the whole unit and that it would be $6,800 for that. I never knew that technicians could give estimates for new A/C's and such. I told him we'd have to think about it.
Since then I have gotten a few different quotes all between $4,500 and $5,000 for the new A/C from more reputable companies and have one quote to replace the evaporator coil for $1,500. Why the heck is Technical Services so over priced? With their reliability and pricing we will definitely never be using them again and wouldn't recommend anybody else to do so either.
PS: I noticed another reviewer had stated that the tech told his mother that the duct work was bad. The first time they came out to do our maintenance the technician told us that our duct work was bad and wanted us to pay $4,000 to get it fixed. I'll be having our new company (when we choose which one we're going with) check the duct work. I wouldn't put it past Technical Services to give false information.
Technical Services came out and performed the duct sanitation as agreed and showed me where I had significant mold buildup in my air handler and that this constant mold and standing water was unhealthy and was causing damage to my system. I was shocked to find I had mold as the company that I had used the year before to service my system did not tell me I had mold. In fact I don't even remember them opening up the air handler so am not sure how thorough their service check was. I was concerned because both my husband and I are allergic to mold so this clearly explained why we had been so sick all year.
I asked the Technical Services tech why I had such severe mold build up in only one year and was I doing something wrong like maybe running the system too long and at a too low a temperature? He looked at me in shock and said that the mold buildup was from years of mold build up, not one year. So I knew for sure the first company had not bothered to open the air handler to inspect and clean it as part of the AC cleaning checkup. The technician told me not to take his word but had me climb the ladder and actually look at all the mold, I was dismayed to see how thick it was and how extensive it was in every nook and cranny of my air handler. I shuddered to think that we were breathing this poison every day. He advised me that he would clean the mold and sanitize as part of my coupon service and recommend that I install an UV system to prevent future mold problems. Now when other reviewers claim that the service techs are salespeople that is partly true but not in a negative way. Technical Services trains their employees very well so that while your system is being serviced, you are also advised of any upgrades that might benefit you. I have not had them try to force me into a hard sell on any product. Rather I am presented with the pros and cons of their recommendations and not threatened of horrors that will happen if I don't take their advice.
Since my husband and I have bad allergies I went ahead and had the UV system installed because being sick constantly wasn't any fun and it was only in this new house that we were getting sick all the time. While the service tech was there, he also advised me that my attic insulation was not up to code, which I knew from when I purchased the home. He offered me a good discount if I had the insulation updated with the installation of the UV system. Not only did I have them do that but also had them quote me a price on upgrading the insulation in my garage as well as it would get unbearably hot.
Although the price for both services was steep, I was assured that I would have a dramatic improvement in my health and also that I would start to see my system run more efficiently cooling my house faster and also reducing my electric bill. I am delighted to say that all those things happened. Before the insulation was improved I was not able to get my house to run below 75 degrees and when we went away and came back it would take over 10 hours for the house to cool. Now it was only taking about half that time. And we saw our electric bill go down about $50/month in the hottest months. Finally my husband and I were able to sleep and have a house that was cool enough for us and we were spending less money and having more comfort. Technical Services believes in loyalty programs for their customers so we received a free 3 year maintenance agreement for an annual service check. Each year without fail, Technical Services calls me to schedule that free check rather than me having to call them.
My UV light blew out but was under warranty and Technical Services came right out no questions asked and installed a new light. In 2009 my Central AC compressor unit just died, completely died. Typical of a low cost contractor installed unit that was not upgraded by the original home owner and that we expected would happen based on the inspection we had prior to purchasing the house. It was predicted to die in the seventh year and it happened exactly as we were advised it would.
Technical Services came out the day I called and gave me various quotes for multiple systems. I went with the higher priced unit because it had a very long warranty on it and a higher SEER rating. The technician knew his stuff and did not push me but advised me of the various rebates the "Cadillac" version had. On the spot I received a Florida Light & Power rebate as well as a preferred customer rebate that Technical Services offered. That was an immediate $2700 discount. I was then advised I was eligible for a $1700 Manufacturer rebate that would be mailed to me (Technical Services completed and submitted all the paperwork, my only job was to cash the check) and that I was eligible for the $1500 Federal rebate when I filed my taxes. After all the rebates were applied ($5900) my unit now was just a few dollars more than the cheaper less efficient unit that didn't qualify for all the energy rebates. The technician also advised that I should expect to see my electric bill reduce in half with this new energy efficient system. My new unit was so huge that change in the air handler system required an additional UV light, Technical Services gave me a great deal because I already had a UV light installed. In addition they extended my service contract by an additional 2 years. I also received a free electronic multiple cycle thermostat unit.
The unit was installed and operating within 48 hours and let me tell you we were delighted because it was the middle of summer and it was so hot, we almost checked into a hotel. When the technician advised the job was complete and showed me how to work the system, I was amazed at the power the unit was putting out and how fast my house was cooling. Within about 3.5 hours the temperature in my house went from reading 93 to 76, we slept well that night. When my electric bill came in the next month, I was shocked to see that yes my bill had literally been cut in half. I was now really enjoying my home and the great system I had.
My electric bill continues to be low and yet my home is very comfortable and no mold has ever come back and I can breath and my husband and I have no sinus problems. Life has been good thanks to Technical Services. My most recent job was in March of this year when they came out for my annual system check. I was advised that there was some water backing up into my air handler and the tech told me he was going into the attic to find the source. I was advised there were a number of leaks in the seals in my ductwork although my ductwork was fine and would last for many more years. Because I was a good customer with Technical Services, the tech quoted me the normal price but called back to the owner to ask if they could offer me a better deal given the fact that my system was installed
