I broke a tooth and called the office for a visit. The receptionist told me that for this I could come in anytime between 8a-6p during business days. I made it to the office at the end of the day, around 4:45. I waited in the reception area for just over an hour. I did not mind, initially, the wait because I was being "fit in". I should have left. The people in and out were upset, one was on her cell phones about costs disclosed after work completed and asking the person on the other end to bring a credit card so she could pay and leave because they do not offer any payment plan, another mother and father were complaining while their daughter was texting them from the chair that they kept asking her why she was there and talking about setting up another appointment. People were being called to the desk one by one and told that the staff was behind and it would take another hour or so to be seen. Some chose to leave, rescheduling for the following day, while others chose to wait. I was called back by the hygenist. She was pleasant. She took my x-rays, asked me what was going on, what I had done for treatment so far, what I expected, and so on. We spent over an hour discussing my dental history, my fear of hte dentist, my financial influences on choices, despite insurance, and so on. We even spoke of school and families. Twice she excused herself to get the dentist. The dentist came in after being asked the second time, in her gown, face mask, and magnifying glasses from the cubicle next to me. She walked to the X-rays, spoke to the hygienist, and with her back to me, never introducing herself. She advised me to take 3 Motrin, and that I would need a root canal and crown. I had already known what the recommendation would be. I already have a crown. I told her that financially I couldn't afford the crown right now. Her response was that I would need to have the oral surgeon extract my tooth and then have dental implants. At this point she has not even looked at my tooth, but has reviewed the X-ray. I told her that I had been taking Motrin 800 mg three times a day, Tylenol 1000 mg four times a day, using Anbesol and topical Benzocaine, all without relief. Her response was that the last two only worked on the tissue, not the pain. No? Really? She asked if I had experienced any swelling, I said the day before I though I had some but was not sure. She said she'd give me an antibiotic for the tooth and a narcotic, very strong, can cause dizziness. She said that part twice. It was at that point she looked at the tooth. She said, "Oh, I see the crown on the other side. You have a lot of fillings in the back, we need to get oyu back on track with cleanings". I was aware of the fillings, I was present when they were done. She excused herself and told me "Go home and get some rest". At that point the hygenist, bless her heart, said "Rest? She has to go into work". The dentist responded with "Work? What could you possibly be doing at this time of day for work?" I didn't say. The hygenist said "She's a nurse, she works in the ER". At that moment I saw exactly the type of "Professional" she was. Her demeanor changed and she started to walk back into the room to talk to me, her whole facial expression had changed. I was disgusted, so I ignored her and spoke to the Hygenist. Not my best moment but I think that what you do for living wouldn't influence how you are treated.
When I went to check out at the reception area the three people standing there argued over who was going to check me out because their shift was over (1 minute prior) and they wach wanted to leave, all giving reasons why they should go first (child care, ride outside). I was told I had a referral to the Oral Surgeon, who is only there on Fridays, but could see me the following Friday. This was Thursday. I asked for the latest appointment, I work night shift and was working the night I was there and the following, as well as the night prior to this appointment we were scheduling. The latest appontment time was 2pm. I set the appointment.
Today I went in for that appointment. I was 15 min early. The hygienist came out and called a name similar to mine, but not mine. She went to the receptionist and they pointed at me. I went to them and asked her what name she called. She stated one similar, but not mine. I told her my name and asked if it was me she wanted, she nodded. We went back to the room and she pulled up the X-rays and printed out a cost of service for an extraction, asking me if I wanted "shots to numb the area of to be put to sleep". I choose the first. She then asked me to sign a paper agreeing to the terms, while stating that most people choose to go to sleep because, and she held up a print out of my X-ray, the Oral Surgeon "would have to remove some of the gum area and bone and that with all that drilling people just prefer to go to sleep". I advised her that I did not have a ride and that I didn't realize it was so extensive. She said "Oh, you want to do this today? This is his last appointment before he leaves." I told her I came in 8 days before, was still in pain, and still had not seen the Surgeon. That I needed to make other arrangements if this could not be done. She said she would go ask him if he would be able to do it today, implying with her sucking of her teeth and frown that the answer would be no, and then said "We're only here on Fridays" before leaving hte room. I never saw the surgeon. I choose to leave. I find it peculiar that the dentist who saw me first in the same office mentioned implants (for one tooth, a molar) without looking at me at all, just the xray, and that I never had a consultation with the actual surgeon and here this person was asking me to sign consent and a financial agreement on a treatment for a condition and subsequent procedure I was not being informed of by a qualified health care professional. I will not return to them. I would rather suffer. I will find another dentist, private, not a chain, and I will deal with what I need to, appropriately. It is sad, my children have had dental cleanings there, once. I should have known when they referred my 10 year old to a pediatric endodontist for sedation to fill his baby teeth that had cavities that they were running a scam. I did not, by the way, have that appointment either. My son's baby teeth fell out, he practices better dental hygiene, and has zero cavities. It's a scam. On everyone. The elderly, children, everyone. Most of the people I've talked to since have told me that this is the only dentist they can go to because of their HMO. I have a PPO. Thank God. They can see so many patients because they overbook and reschedule so much that they don't really ever see anyone. As a health care professional I am stunned by this whole experience.
