John was out quickly to assess the damage and repair, made a quote and stuck to it, and quieted an upset condo dweller whose drywall ceiling was damaged by an upper floor toilet wax ring failure. John's experience with insurance claims and testy clients saved the day in keeping everybody calm.
I haven't seen the repair but my downstairs neighbor seems to be satisfied. In Florida, that's high praise indeed. I'll use John as my "go to" with drywall in the future.
Thanks again, John!

Joe said that the work would take all day. They were a bit late arriving so they had to return the next day(Saturday) to finish the job. I was pleased with the results except for a couple of places where the ceiling texture dripped down the wall. It just needs some touch up paint to make it unnoticeable. I plan do do this myself, because although I spoke with John about these spots, I've not heard from him. I had asked John if they could add an extension pole to my ceiling fan when they did the work and he agreed they could. However, the crew chief said the wires were too short so they just reinstalled the fan as is. I had an electrician reinstall the fan with the extension pole that I provided. I paid John a deposit on signing the contract and he gave me the Angies List discount of $100. The crew asked for the balance on finishing the work , which I paid. Maybe I should have told them I'd pay them the balance once the touch up work and the light bulbs had been inserted in the lights had been done. I am pleased with the result. It looks so much better. I hope that I will not have to deal with anymore sagging or cracking in that ceiling for years to come.

The area worked on looked okay at first, but then the popcorn bubbled up and fell off the ceiling.  We called John several times, but he gave us the run around, saying he would come out to fix it, but then he wouldn't come or call.  After several calls, he agreed to come out, but only if he could do the entire ceiling.  We said no, and finally he agreed to come out and fix what his company should have done correctly the first time for a futher $325.  We felt that he should have come out to fix what his company failed to do properly at no charge.  In the end, we went with another contractor.  I feel robbed by this company.  I paid them $175 for nothing.  I want my money back!
Response from Quality Ceiling Refinishing Inc

"This particular customer received an estimate over the phone. The estimate was for $175. I told them there is no guarantee of color match unless we do the entire ceiling. We do not guarantee a patch. He said because he was selling the house he said he didn't want to spend a lot of money so he only wanted a patch. I received a call from the customer and he explained to me what happened. I told him for it not to look like a patch we would need to retexture the entire ceiling. The popcorn that was left on the ceiling was "dead popcorn". To patch it up would be like painting over dirt. If I did a patch again the same thing would have happened."

Roger and Lawn were very hard working and professional. They did a good job and even repaired a crack in the hall ceiling and took a hook out of another room's ceiling.

They said they would be here at 9 AM and they arrived at 9:10 Am  It took them 2 hours to prep the ceiling before starting the repairs. EVERYTHING from the ceiling on down was covered.  It took them about 2 and half hours to repair the cracks in the ceiling.  Next they prime the ceiling and got in ready for painting.  Painting and removable of all the plastic covering, used to protect the wall and the floor was done by 4:30PM. was very impressed how professional the jog was done.

I have recommended them to others who might need any type of ceiling repairs or painting.

We hired them to re plaster our ceilings, the job looked great when it was first finished. but now it is pealing,  we have had them out once to fix one area which is pealing again.  now for the past 2 months we have had nothing from them but a song and dance about when they are going to come out here and fix the ceilings.  Once a week I have been calling them to schedule a time to come out.  I never get a return call and never get a time for them to come out.  I just want the ceilings to be fixed properly.

The owner arrived on time and at night (with no electricity) to do the estimate.  When his crew arrived, they went to work right away and managed to fix every spot that needed fixing, around 15 large holes.  The orange peel and popcorn areas blended VERY well.  The knockdown areas didn't blend perfectly but much better then they were before, and they had already set that expectation with me before starting the job.  Overall it was a great experience and our foreclosure house looked new again when they were done!

Terrific service - all around. The owner and his son were really responsive in getting us a quote--and in scheduling Roger and his helper to perform the work almost immediately. They're neat, punctual, and the finished product looks great. We also appreciated that they didn't insist on re-painting entire ceilings--they did a masterful job of blending the repaired areas with existing ceilings in 3 rooms. They even moved furniture. (I didn't rate the price because we didn't have another quote to compare with. After meeting with Anthony about the estimate, I felt fully confident that his company would do the job right. And they did.) These guys are pros!

The company came in like "gang busters".  they just wanted to get the job done.  On the evening of the first day I was told to have tile picked out for the next day. My head was "spinning"  but I was able to accomplish the task after I got off from work that evening.  The next day the Company went to pick up the tile at the local Home Depot and also went shopping for all the Materials that were needed for the shower remodel (material cost $895.-),  When looking at the itemized Home Depot purchase list,  I noticed that some items such as trash bags and saw blades were also purchased, the cost for these items were taken off from the final bill.  After 5 days of work John Pesce and I went over all the work that had been done.  Up to that point the majority of the work was done.  I pointed out that the ceiling in the living room was "bulging" and he said that he would have one of his workers look at it.  i also told him that the dining room ceiling light had not been moved to the new location, and the half bath walls were not textured yet, as well as the walls and ceiling in the pantry closet were not done either.  I was that this would be taken care of next week.  On Tuesday the following week I came home on my lunch hour to see how things were progressing only to find out the "bulge" in the living room ceiling had opened up due to a pipe leaking water.  The pipe and the ceiling then were repaired the next day (Wednesday).  At that time I also noticed that there was a wire hanging down from the dining room ceiling, but it was not finished so that one could actually connect a light fixture.  That Wednesday John Pesce called me at work and wanted to collect final payment.  We agreed to meet that evening.  When I came to the unit, workers were still busy texturizing the ceiling in the living room, thinking that all the work would be completed that evening.  John then told me that I owed him $700.- more then the original $8955.- quoted.  When I questioned what that was for I was told that a lot of extra things were done and he didn't even charge me for the leaking pipe and to redo the ceiling.  Rather than arguing I paid him the money, which in retrospect I should not have done.  The next morning I went into the unit to inspect how everything looked and I noticed that the ceiling in the kitchen was not painted.   Walls and ceiling in pantry was not textured and painted, dining room fixture still not completed.  Repaired ceiling and paint in living room does not match.  After calling John Pesce numerous times for about 4 weeks he finally sent someone out to finish the work in the closet.  I have been calling him since May 12 to finish the rest of the work.  I am getting the "run around".  He tells me I call you next  Thursday to let you know if we can be there on Friday or Saturday.  He has been telling me this now for about 4 weeks.  It is my fault that I am in this situation.  I did not do my homework.  I trusted this man and thought that he had integrity.  After all his shiny brochure stated that he was a Member of Angie's list and the Better Business Bureau.  I found out that there were 7 complaints posted with the BBB, as well as complaints right here on Angie's list.  But this is a little too late.
Response from Quality Ceiling Refinishing Inc

"We have been in business for 31 years. We strive to make every one of our customers happy but realize that there will be few that we can't. We have an A rating with the BBB despite the 7 complaints she mentions above. This customer was acting as the contractor per her request in effort to save her money. Therefore, I had to go and purchase more material as the job progressed. Member was aware of this and was given receipts to prove every expense. We are currently trying to make Member happy and have gone above and beyond to do so. This was the case prior to this report. Also, the fact that she complains that we went in like "gang busters" is ironic to me considering she wanted to have the work done quickly. As mentioned before we will continue to do what we can to make Member happy."

THE MAJORITY OF THE JOB WAS GREAT. WE WHERE NOT TOLD THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO PUT THE LIGHT FIXTURES BACK UP. OUR CEILING IS SLOPED RATHER HIGH AND IT WAS DIFFICULT. WE HAD TO HIRE SOMEONE TO DO IT. SOME PAINT CAME OFF FROM THE TAPE AND AFTER I MENTIONED THE HEIGHT ISSUE THE OWNER DID OFFER TO HAVE A WORKER COME AND HELP US PAINT IT. I APPRECIATED THAT.

Poor quality workmanship; very sloppy work. I asked John Pesce to go back and take a look. He has refused to go back. I own several rental properties. I will not be using his company again
Response from Quality Ceiling Refinishing Inc

"When I first read this report I immediately contacted the tenant and the owner of the condo (who posted this report). They both agreed that neither one of them never tried to contact me. VERY IMPORTANT!!! Then I sent my technician to the condo on Friday February 11th. He said the ceiling was completely refinished. A patch was initially agreed upon. But we did the entire ceiling. We replaced a bad section of drywall due to a leak and retextured the entire ceiling mixed with a flat paint. The tenant said water hit the ceiling before it was completely dry and smudged the spot. My technician repaired the spot. The tenants son was there and said he would paint the ceiling with a semi gloss paint when the ceiling dried. I have called the Member three times and I have received no return call from her. If I had received a call from the Member regarding the smudge that occured after our repair I would have gladly gone back to fix the smudge."

Well if you read my previous post, I was pretty irate about the lack of follow-through. Well, upon getting my post, we got a call, very polite and insistent that the owner was unaware that they dropped the ball the first time around. He profusely apologized, and said that he insisted on doing the job for free(!). We explained that we don't want anything free, just to be respected and well serviced. Bottom line? His crew was out here today doing the work, they did a great job, neat, tidy, cleaned up, not a speck of anything, and were pleasant and professional. I am now a customer for life (I hope I don't need THAT much drywall...), but it attests to the power of Angie's' List AND our ratings count! I am reassured that there are quality providers who care about their reputation. I DO expect a bill......

We needed to have our kitchen ceiling patched and re-coated and also had some minor drywalling to be done before we installed new cabinets. John returned my call within an hour and met me 20 minutes after his return call. He gave us a quote and we discussed several options. We had a recent mess from other contractors and have been disappointed by most contractors in the past. So we were leery of believing that they would leave no mess, would arrive on time, and complete the work on schedule. John's crew arrived within 15 minutes of their promised time, got right to work, and were happy to show us what they did and progress throughout. Overall, a great experience! The only reason I gave a "B" rating on price was I decided not to get other quotes due to time constraints. So, I have no comparison. But, John's experience and reviews from others made us comfortable enough to move forward.

Comments: John came and gave me an estimate for $1685 less the $100 Angie's list coupon. He was very knowledgeable and explained what I could expect from the process, including the limitations on what could be done with the garage ceiling. (Due to the placement of the studs, the ceiling could be made to look better, but couldn't be made to look completely flat.) While his estimate was higher than the other bidder, he was able to complete the work in one day, the next Monday, instead of three days so I went with him. The three person team came around 9 and was done by 4. They were a polite, hard working crew. They taped up plastic on all the walls and on the floor to keep everything clean. This is very messy work, and I was pleased with the condition of the house when they left. (There was some minor damage to the wall paint from the tape holding up the plastic, which I touched up afterward.) While the ceilings were wet, they looked great. After they dried (a three day smelly process) it was apparent that there were a couple of trouble spots on the lanai ceiling. There were brown spots (not there previously) and rings around the two can lights and there was a portion of the ceiling that they had missed while painting. I called John on Thursday and left a message. No response. I called again on Friday and he said someone would come by the next Monday. On Monday, no one showed up and no one called. I called John again on Tuesday. He said someone would come by on Wednesday at 9. No one came or called so at 0930, I called John back. Around 1100 someone came and touched up the spots. He did a good job as well. After it dried, it was fine. The ceilings look so much better, I am really pleased with them, but getting someone back to do the touchup was harder than it should have been.

Original work lasted only briefly. Tape along straight seems peeled back and revealed long straight ceiling splits on tape lines across the house. Business owner stated that the guarantee was only for one year despite the obvious poor results. Ceilings now require all work repaired and repainted about 600 square feet. Business owner asked us to confirm we were not on a sink hole, insinuating the splits were caused by the house settling. After more expensive consultations, it was determined the house is not on a sink hole. Three other estimates from other Ceiling Repair companies confirmed independently that the original ceiling work reflected poor workmanship. We were assured that proper workmanship should last 20 years - not less than 18 months. The business owner told us that its a c*** shoot with ceiling work - sometimes it takes and sometimes it doesn't - and Quality Ceiling Refinishing doesn't take responsibility for long term customer satisfaction. We do not recommend this service provider to anyone who intends on staying in their home more than 12 months to avoid not having to repair the work of Quality Ceiling Refinishing after their guarantee period expires.
Response from Quality Ceiling Refinishing Inc

"I went to this customers home to look at the situation. I noticed that the seams were splitting. In Florida many houses are built on sand. A lot of structural movement and sometimes sinkholes. In this particular case the drywall was installed when the house was built. It was taped and mudded when the house was built. When we scraped the popcorn off and repair any bad seams we make sure the drywall and the tape joints are secured. We replace any bad tape joints with nylon mesh tape. Then we seal and prime the drywall then texture with a knockdown finish and spray paint the sealing. This is a cosmetic fix. The rest of the areas in the entire house where we repaired are all ok except for this stress area. I told the customer we can fix it but cannot guarantee that it will not happen again."

We decided to replace the popcorn ceiling in one of the small bedrooms, so we checked the list and found Johns company. He came over gave a good estimate, and then he also talked us into doing the other 2 bedrooms for a discount, and we jumped at it. At the time we were in the process of putting in wood floors from another company. and everything was in the front living room. We went to the other 2 rooms, and asked him questions about covering the furniture, and he stated "everything will be covered, because there close to the wall, just take these items down(high items off the desk), and you'll be fine. He also told us that they will clean up after everything. Great we said. We really didn't have anymore room to move anything else. 2 days later the contractors arrived on time, and got right to work. Mark was the supervisor, I had to ask questions to at least get some insight into exactly know what I would be expecting during the day. As the day went on It seemed to be going well, until it was time to finish up and start cleaning. Because it was raining, I guess my overhead cover that runs down the entire side of my garage wasn't enough, they decide to clean their tools(which has all the old white drywall gunk on it) in my pet memorial garden, which lines the front of my house and porch. I was told that they would vacuume and cleanup everything, nothing would be left behind. There was popcorn remains all over my house, left on the desk, on the master bedrooms, lined up along the hallway floors, the front door throw rug was wet from them walking in and out from the rain, and tracking the white stuff, in and out of the front room. To make things worse. When the took down the AC vents, they plastered them, and I was told by John to just punch holes in it, it's not hard to do. I also found my thermostat on the floor. It had fallen before, but this time, they walked over it several times, and now, it is completely broken. I called John the next day, and told him what happened, and he said he never had a complaint about the quality of his work. The did an awesome job on the ceilings, it was great. It was the cleanup, and his response to it that I don't agree with. He then said he would come out first thing the next day, around 9am, I said great. 10am. and I finally called. John answered, and said are you home, like He called, and apparently I wasn't here. Very funny. He came over. We discussed the issues. He of course didn't agree with the things that I stated to him. His responses were consistently about what I can do to fix the problem, not what he or his workers should have done to not get to this point in the first place. Unfortunately, I have decided not to use this company again. Theres always a first time for everythng.

Update:  The workmanship and quality of material is bad.  It just doesn't hold up over time.  There is nothing like the ceiling always falling down.

Did the job in one day. The texture started falling down within several weeks of the job. I called the owner and he said he would have someone out to fix this. I took off from work for them to come out and they never came out. So, we had to reschedule the appt. and I had to take off work again. This time they came out and by this time the ceiling was literally falling on my head in the master bedroom and bathroom. Instead of fixing the problem they said they would need to redo the ceiling completely. They came out on another day and redid the ceiling. They took down their texture and redid it with different material and texture. They didn t completely cover the ceiling and it did not match the rest of the house. They were sloppy in their workmanship; they used staples in the wall. This job again started cracking and falling. The owner came out to look at it and he said he would have someone out this morning (2/19) to fix it. He said he would patch it; but I didn t want it patched, I wanted it redone. He told me it would be Mon. or Tue. of next week before they could get the crew out to do the work and started screaming and yelling at me over the phone. I either want this job fixed or I would like my money back for the poor workmanship.
