SHORT VERSION; I ordered new canvass for my boat from Cape Coral Custom Upholstery. It took FIVE MONTHS to get a bad installation. The owners, Leslie and Mike Tarasyuk do not care about you. They just want to take your money and provide the least amount they can get away with. They have zero regard for keeping their own word. They do not care about your things and their installers trashed my boat, treating it like a piece of junk. They make no apologies for their failure to deliver when promised or for their inferior work. Instead they deny responsibility and make childish excuses. IF YOU LIKE WASTING YOUR MONEY AND DEALING WITH AGGRAVATION, YOU’LL BE HAPPY WITH THEM. Otherwise go elsewhere. ANYWHERE, BUT HERE! LONG VERSION: I ordered canvass for my boat on Jan 8, 2016. They told me the work would be done in a week or two. I did not know they farmed their work out to sub-contractors. FIVE MONTHS LATER on or about May 31st they finally did the installation. The very next day I had a puddle in the middle of the top from the rain. They sent the contractor back and they removed the top and re-sewed it, resulting in a poor fit and throwing the side curtains out of alinement. The contractor left scraps of material and footprints all over the boat. There was sticky tape residue everywhere (from when they made their patterns). My instrument panel cover and seat covers were removed and left in a pile on the deck. Straps were left just hanging from the stainless rails that support the top. Stitching was crooked in places. After the contractor re-sewed the top there were holes from where the original stitching was. Parts of the top were puckered. I of course complained about these issues. They wanted to re-sew it again and put sealer over the holes! I visited their shop just about every other day to demand they make things right. On one occasion, as I was getting to my wits end, I got loud (totally out of character for me). This resulted in the co-owner Mike thrething me physically and demanding that I leave. Finally, after I threatened to sue them they agreed to replace the top (and only the top). I have owned many, many boats in almost 50 years of boating. I have had my share of canvass work done. Every canvass person I ever spoke to told me you can match new side curtains to a top but you cannot successfully match a new top to existing side curtains. They insisted they could do this. They told me they would remove the top and make a new pattern and then return with a new top. What they did was remove the top and take it back to their shop – leaving my boat, my electronics, and my varnished teak open to the rain and Florida sun for over a week! When they removed the top they said they’d be back in a couple of days. I could not be present when they installed the new top. When I got on the boat I found more scraps laying around and a nice pile of animal feces (probably Iguana feces). When they removed the top I told them we have a lot of Iguanas on the property, up to 4 feet long, and I was concerned about them getting on the boat. However, as I’ve already stated, these folks do not care about their customers or their customers’ belongings. The new top is better than the first one but still is puckered on the edges, has gaps around the windshield and the SIDE WINDOWS DO NOT FIT. These WERE LEFT BY THEM UNSNAPPED AND UNZIPPERED because of the misfit. Weeks, and many more excuses, after they installed the top, the shop manager came out to look at the windows on July 16. He managed to get the starboard side snapped partially into place. He did this by standing on the gunwale and pushing down with all the weight and strength of his 20-something year old physical being, along with help from the hot mid-day sun. I’m 64 and cannot envision myself doing this out on the water when hit with a thunderstorm. He went back to Leslie and Mike and told them I needed new side windows. So here we are on July 26, 2016, almost eight months later and today I was informed that if I want new side windows I would have to pay for them! Are you serious? You want me to pay you to fix that which you did not do correctly in the first place????? I’m contemplating whether to go to court or keep my blood pressure from skyrocketing by letting it go and just hiring someone else to fix this mess. I own a business myself in Cape Coral and would NEVER, in a million years, treat customers like these folks do. If you would like some pictures of their horrible work email me at
[email protected] Somewhere in this process they also took my old canvass. At the time of the original install, when they removed the old canvass, I rolled it up neatly and placed in on my dock. At some point, well after the original install, they took this back to their shop without my knowledge or permission. I guess they wanted to see what I originally had – I don’t know. It was old and faded but serviceable. They said they would return it. When I asked for it back Leslie told me they threw it away! It was old and faded but serviceable and I had planned to put it on eBay. I spoke to Cape Coral police and they advised me to file a criminal theft complaint. I should have, but I have a business to run and never got to follow through.
