Paper Shredding
$261
We made arrangements to have them come to my home before noon on 12/12/12, and I requested that they call me 20 minutes ahead of their arrival time so I could meet them at the house. At noon on the 12th I received a call that they were one hour away. 45 minutes later I got a stern call from the owner Bruce asking where I was--he was earlier than expected and agitated to be sitting in my driveway. I was already in my car on the way there and met them about 5 minutes later.
When I showed Bruce the boxes, he affirmed that I was pretty accurate in my estimate and got to work. The video on the company's website shows Bruce putting binders in a big trash-like cart, so I did not take the time in advance to remove all of the documents from the binders. However when he started the removal process, he told me that he could not take binders and that I had to remove all of the papers. It wasn't such a hassle, but I was dressed for work and certainly would have done the dirt work the night before if I had been advise that binders could not go through the machine.
About 90% through the process Bruce's wife delivered me a bill for "87 boxes at $3.00 per box." I questioned Bruce directly about the estimate as I clearly only had about 40 boxes of paperwork, however he insisted that his container holds "7 boxes each" and he did 12 loads, so I should be charged for 87 boxes. I was thrown off by the logic, but didn't fight it as I was in a hurry to get the process overwith. It left a bad feeling that I had been swindled. Lesson learned--get the written quote BEFORE they start.
I went to pay the bill to Bruce's wife with my credit card and was told that they only take cash and checks, and that I had to go on PayPal from their site to pay them. Again, this would have been nice to have been advised in advance. They left at 1pm and I told them I would try to pay it when I got home that night, and I was told that would be fine or I could mail a check. In my opinion this did not convey a sense of urgency to be paid immediately, as sending a check would take several days at a minimum to be received by Alligator Shredding.
I misplaced the invoice that night and truthfully forgot about paying it right away, and received multiple calls and texts from Bruce. I replied by text and let him know that I would take care of the bill and explained that I had misplaced it. Admittedly I said I would get to it that evening, but I was feeling ill and did not get it completed. (We are still within ONE business day of the services, mind you.) I woke up this morning to two texts from Bruce: "We need to have your account paid in full today." (Okay, no problem.) Next: "If you don't want to pay for my service I will be happy to return your shredded papers to you. All 1900 lbs."
I replied that I thought he was a jerk and enclosed the PayPal transaction ID as proof of payment that had been done this morning and explained that I would be leaving negative reviews for him. He replayed, "Me for your business too. That you don't pay your bills."
I told him that I felt he lied about his pricing. "I said I had 35-40 boxes, and you said they were $3.00 each." "I also paid you with 48 hours of service, which is an acceptable period for vendors that don't accept credit cards at point of sale."
His responses was that he pulled 12 containers out of my garage with 7 boxes in each followed by a "learn to count."
I said he was "a class act." He replied, "If you want your paper back you can have it."
I asked him to leave me alone and told him that there was no reason for further communications.
First:  I feel like I was bait and switched. If this company prices by the container, then they should QUOTE by the container and explain what that means. As the customer, I have no idea how many boxes fit into a container--I just know that I have about 40 of them and want to know how much each will cost. Bruce changed the terms of the quote on the fly.
I counted 41 empty boxes in my garage. Give or take a few small and half-empty ones and a few larger ones that's roughly 40 boxes. I have no dispute that he hauled 1900 lbs away, nor that the container went into his truck 12 times--but that's not what I was quoted. I was quoted to have 40 boxes removed at $3.00 each, and I was billed for 87 based on his container logic argument.
Second: Bruce lacks a professionalism in his collections process. To be threatened to have 1900 lbs. of shredded papers "returned" to me is ridiculous. It had been less than 48 hours and this man resorted to threats. If he is so worried about being paid he should ensure payment upon job completion and accept credit cards like most other merchants, or require a deposit in advance. He created this "collections stress" himself, but somehow feels it is okay to harass his customers when he isn't paid exactly the way he wants to be.
I would not recommend this business.
