The closet planners at the Container Store have computer programs to help plan closets, bookshelves, utility areas, etc. The planners were all very helpful, although some were better than others at suggesting useful alternatives. They do not charge for the planning; you pay for the hardware and materials. They also do installations for an additional price. Not cheap, but the prices seem to compare favorably to the companies that do built-in closet installations. The Container Store has an annual sale on shelving (this year it was in the fall) at a 20% discount. They seem to care about customer satisfaction. On weekends, you can wait a long time to meet with a planner they give you one of the buzzer things like restaurants do when you are waiting for a table, so you can keep shopping.
