The report stated clearly that I had no exterior insulation and calculated that insulating the walls was the one project that would save the most money on my energy bills. To blow in insulation in exterior walls, however, requires drilling holes from the outside, and this couldn't be done without removing the aluminum siding on my house. It's very difficult, almost impossible, to reinstall old aluminum siding, so I had to factor in the fact that I'd need to replace all of my siding in order to properly insulate the exterior walls. (Given the jump in home heating oil prices, I decided that taking a loan out for new siding was worth it if I could significantly decrease my heating bill.) The siding company removed the siding, and the insulation company came to blow in insulation. Unfortunately, they found that the house was in fact already well insulated. They drilled test holes on all walls and on both the upstairs and downstairs, and every location had adequate insulation. The end result was that I trusted an energy audit that was just plain wrong, and in the process tore down siding that, although old, was still quite functional and didn't need to be replaced. This has turned into a very expensive mistake. In his defense, the home inspector will refund my $325.

We are first time home buyers looking at a house house that needs work. Jim was very professional and helpful on the phone and spent plenty of time explaining and pointing things out to us during the inspection. He gave us his report in a binder before he left and I would feel comfortable calling him with more questions if they come up.
