Hi Angieslist community, I'd like to tell you about my experience with K&J Tree removal. My father hired K&J tree to remove and or trim several trees on his property. My father and I own adjacent properties in Cheshire. K&J asked my father if it was alright if they could drive on my property in order to get their bucket/chipper trucks closer to the trees to be trimmed. K&J promised that they would use the protective steel mats on my lawn to prevent any damage. I said this was fine. Bear in mind that K&J advertise use of the mats on lawns to prevent damage on their ads. On Friday 7/17/15, K&J came out to do the work. I was at work at the time. I reminded my father to request that the steel mats be used. When my father made the request, the K&J employee said not to worry. He said they only use the mats when they use the bigger trucks and they wouldn't cause any damage. They had the protective mats sitting on the trucks and they completely refused to use them. K&J went about their business driving all over my lawn. I live on a property that is .25 acre. The ruts caused by K&J were about 3 inches deep of firmly compacted soil. The ruts were all throughout my property. In addition the company drove over a part of my driveway where they caused part on the edge to sink in. When i came home from work that day I was dismayed. K&J showed absolutely no respect for my property. I was livid. My small but beautiful lawn was, in my eyes, destroyed. To make matters worse, they also drove on my other neighbor's lawn, creating more serious ruts. They had absolutely no permission to be on this 3rd party's lawn. I immediately called K&J to report the issue. The man who answered the phone seemed annoyed and without saying much (no apology offered) transferred me to the office girl. The office girl asked me to email pictures of the damage, which I did. Once i did she responded and told me someone would be sent out to look at the damage. About a week later, a man came out to remove the remaining tree trunks with a bobcat. He told me he would be repairing the rut damage. He told me the best he could do was lay topsoil and reseed. This guy was pretty nice and actually apologized. He said that the crews that K&J use are "cowboys" and tend to act recklessly to get the jobs job as quickly as possible. This certainly seemed the case in this instance. He admitted that he does these "repair jobs" very often because the workers refuse to use their mats. About a week after this, he came out with a helper and raked several yards of new soil on the area with the worst of the damage. Fresh seed was also thrown on top of the new dirt(not very carefully). I think he did a pretty decent job but there were several areas with ruts that he missed. I didn't want to make a fuss and frankly didn't want anything else to do with this company so I let it go. I watered the seeds and began to notice that the topsoil laid down was quite full of rocks and stones, not very good quality. I now have a patchy, rocky, rutted lawn (covering about 2/3 of my entire lawn) where I once had pretty a decent lawn. It may seem trivial but I was also not compensated for all the additional water used to start these seeds during a heat wave. The actual tree trimming/removal on my parents' property was done adequately and efficiently (at the expense of my lawn). Because of this experience, I would never consider hiring this company. I now get upset every time I go in my back yard, thinking about how little regard this company had for my property. I'm upset about the time spent dealing with this issue thus far, and the time and money I'll have to spend in the future to bring my lawn back to how it was. Again, they made an attempt to remedy the situation. It was a half hearted attempt. To rectify the problem correctly would have taken a much more thorough landscaping job. I'm 29 years old, this is me and my wife's first home. We have a 1 year old son. We both work full time jobs and spend what little time we have on nights and weekends working on our home and yard. Our 1932 home was in need of TLC when we purchased it in 2012. We have put a lot of our own labor into this house and it has come a long way in the few years we've lived here. I felt completely disrespected by K&J.
