This new dentist advised that my gums had receded, periodontal exam showed gaps in gums at 5 mm. This was odd because prior dentist in my old town had measured at 3 mm. New dentist said it was common for gums to recede like this in a year's time and that I had bone loss... I later called my old dentist who advised it would be extremely unusual for this change to happen in a year, and in my case, he advised that my teeth had very little calculus; he told me this over zealous selling of this expensive procedure has been occuring for several years. This new dentist also advised that two teeth needed crowns, which was a surprise$.
This new dentist was thus selling me the need for a deep cleaning, he stressed the need to clean out bacteria to prevent bone loss and loss of teeth. He had a poster prominently displaced on the wall showing the progression of that can take place if this cleaning is not performed. The service would cost $2000, with my cost after dental plan being $912. I researched this, the fees honoring the same dental plan for me would be $404, this calling three area dentists, no question, this was for the same service.
Needless to say, I went to another Fort Collins dentist for a second opinion. This dentist measured my gum/teeth gaps at 3mm and of course did not recommend this deep cleaning (root planing and scaling). This dentist only found the one tooth needing a crown.
This branch of Modern Dentistry, apparently a franchise, was in my opinion engaging in a form of bait and switch, using a form of scare tactic, attempting to perform close to $2000, deep cleaning and crown, of work that I felt confident was not necessary. Unfortunately there are lots like this out there. Be wary.
