We have two homes, one in Colorado, currently on the market, and one in Maine, where we now live full-time. The one remaining item at our Colorado home was a very large, valuable, and extremely sentimental wind sculpture, which a former neighbor kindly brought to the UPS store in Durango, CO to be packaged and shipped to Maine for us. The store owner called saying the item was there and that she would get back to us in one day with the total cost for shipping. One week went by, then she called with the total cost for shipping this sculpture, which had been packaged in two large boxes. It was extremely high and we needed to deliberate briefly. She began sending emails almost immediately, saying she needed the package sent out "asap" since it was taking up room in her store. She then began adding storage fees to our invoice. All of this was happening in a mere few days - after the item sat in her store a full week while we waited for a total from her. We contemplated another plan of action, since the shipping amount was so high, but we decided - in only a few days time - to go ahead and have the UPS store ship the two boxes. In the meantime, we spoke with an employee at the store who said the packages had been fully packaged and were ready to go, which further motivated us to just move forward. We paid our invoice in full via paypal, plus those storage fees, then received confirmation of this payment. In about one week we received one of our two boxes, excited to receive the second. That same day, however, we received an email from the store owner saying she had not shipped the second box and would not do so without over $100 more, since she had miscalculated the shipping cost and now needed more money. She said very clearly that it was her error, yet she was still requiring us to either pay this amount or get the item picked up "asap." So, here we were in Maine, with ONE HALF of our scupture, having paid for a job in full, having deliberated carefully about even doing so to begin with, and with no one readily available to just go pick up our reminaing half of a scluture 2000 miles away! We assumed she would realize she needed to simply absorb this cost, since it was her error and we had already paid our invoice in full. This was not our responsibility in any way. We were actually surprised she ever told us about her error, thinking she should simply have absorbed the cost. This is the cost of doing good - and FAIR - business. She now says the amount we paid was only an estimate! She said it was not a firm figure until the item was packaged and ready to go. This is wrong on two fronts. First of all, we paid an invoice. One does not pay an estimate. We paid for packaging, shipping and insurance, all broken down to the cent, and were never given any impression whatsoever that halfway through shipping the cost could change! Secondly, we were told several times that the scuplture was packaged, that the "boxes" were taking up room in her store, and that the sculpture needed to get out of her store "asap", hence the storage fees. We were also told by the store employee, before the updated invoice (updated to include more storage fees) was sent to us to pay, that the packages were "ready to go." We deliberated carefully about spending $400 to send a sculpture. But this piece is very important to us and we decided to go ahead, costly as it was. We would NEVER have gone ahead and paid an invoice if we thought the figure could change halfway thgrough the process! No one would. The kicker is, she is now beginning to charge us storage fees again until we either pay this amount or have the item picked up. This feels like extortion to us. We are pretty stunned by the whole thing, actually. Needless to say, we can no longer 'gift' this to someone, which we contemplated, as half of the sculpture is here in Maine and half is in Colorado. So now we have to put someone out again - 2000 miles away - to pick up this large item and make other shipping arrangements for us. Then we have to begin trying to recoup our costs from this experience - inlcuding, of course, those storage fees! This whole experience has been so disheartening, not only on a business level, but also personally, as the store owner's whole approach to this has been curt and abrasive from day one.
Description of Work: A valuable sculpture was brought to this Durango, CO store to be shipped to us in Maine, where we now live. It was packaged in two boxes. The invoice was paid in full, yet the job was not completed. We never received our second half of the sculpture. See below...
