I live in Co Springs and rental is in Denver. When tenant called and said the drain was leaking. I had her go look and give me details so I could pinpoint problem. When I asked Applewood to give me a ball park figure to change out the drain assembly they said they charge $29 to go out and bid by job not hourly. They were very responsive and said they could send out a plumber within the time frame my tenant needed. I am a average handy gal. Having bought a popup assembly before I knew they run under $20 and at the Restore cost $2. I thought worst case it would run me maybe $80 in labor as it is literally a 30 minute joband acirc;?and brvbar;tops. I was blown away when the LOWEST BID was $477. I chose to decline their proposaland acirc;?and brvbar;.I bought the part at Restore, took my plumbers putty and tools and made the hour drive. The P trap is fine and the task took far less time than the drive. (Would have paid $80 to avoid the hassle.)Here is my take awayand acirc;?and brvbar;.Applewood must get their business from desperate people that have absolutely no idea what something should cost and the rest from the $29 they charge to come out. After paying someone to come out it is counter intuitive to reject the proposal as you are back to square one and having to pay yet another to come out. This model must work for them.I wonder what they charge to put in a totally new faucetand acirc;?and brvbar;..Oh, that would be the $872 bid!!!!!Scary to think some people would pay this. From now on I am only going to go with plumbers that charge hourly plus parts.
Description of Work: Provider came out to my rental property for $29 to bid on replacing the pop up assembly under bathroom sink. Plumber also said the p-t trap "Showed signs of leaking". Low bid was $477. All parts would be top of the line and would have a 2 year 100% parts/labor warranty…..option #2 $872…….option #3 $662

From the moment he walked in, the technician started listing problems. When all was said and done, he had discovered "several cracks" in my heat exchanger (the death blow to any furnace), a gas line that needed to be replaced because it was the wrong size, insufficient combustible air in my furnace closet, and several other smaller items. He showed me fuzzy pictures on his phone and claimed they were images of cracks in my heat exchanger. He then wrote up a bid to replace my furnace for over $8k. He also mentioned that he recommended we immediately stop using the furnace and made several references to the dangerous carbon monoxide dangers to my wife and young children. When I asked him to show me the cracks in the heat exchanger, he got nervous and started stammering about how they were "hard to see". Upon my insistence, he showed me where to look inside my furnace. I did not see any cracks anywhere. I had a second heating and cooling company inspect my furnace and gas line. They confirmed the gas line was the correct size and properly installed and even showed me the code that determined proper sizes. They determined that the furnace had plenty of combustible air (as it has for the last 32 years). Finally, the carefully inspected the heat exchanger, inviting me to watch and explaining what they were doing as they were doing it. They found no cracks. *None*. Finally, they cleaned the furnace, tested mechanical functions, ran a diagnostic test, and installed a new air filter. The Applewood "free furnace inspection and tuneup" was nothing more than a sales call and a scam at that. Preying on the fears of the average person and giving them false information for the sake of a sale is morally shameful and generally detestable. Plus, the technician never did clean or service my furnace, which is why I invited him into my home.
Description of Work: I purchased an Applewood Membership because, even with the membership fee, it saved me money on a different job. With the membership came a free furnace cleaning and tune-up.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. It was very good. They were very good and thorough. They were prompt as far as when they said they would be out. They cleaned up after themselves and didn't leave a mess. I didn't compare their price.

The technician estimated that the work would take around two hours. Quote: $976.21 which consisted of $285 to replace two shut off valves, $414 to replace 10 feet of galvanized pipe with copper, $246 min for labor. (So the first $285 and $414 did not already include labor so must be the cost of the materials). I questioned the tech to explain what was for parts and whats was for labor, and was told not to look at it like that, but to look at the total price which had to cover the cost of advertising etc and these were fixed prices. He also noticed my water pressure was high, and recommended I have a water pressure regulator installed for an additional $1575.22. I checked materials costs online and ten feet of copper pipe costs about $15 and a water pressure regulator costs around $50. With a couple of hours of labor I would expect the line repair to cost between $250 - $300. I had to pay him $29 for the quote, but this would have been waived if I had them do the work, which I have declined!

I had Applewood Plumbing do sewer line work in my rental. They are quick and reliable, but I feel they are expensive. My daughter had the sewer line from her house to the alley replaced and only paid around $4000.00. I didn't realize she had called the city, or I would have done that also.

I called to have a technician come out to check my furnace. They said they might be able get somebody out that day if they had someone cancel or a job was completed ahead of schedule. I wasn't in a hurry, so scheduled an appointment for two days later. The technician showed up within the appointment window and diagnosed the problem quickly. Appleood has a catalog of set prices for variuos procedures, which includes parts and labor. The tchnician showed me the page for the rpair I needed. He had to call to have a part delivered, but that was out in about an hour. The technician pointed out another part that he said would probably fail within a couple of years. He had that part on his truck and could replace it at the same time, for an additional set fee. It looked like a simple job, so I opted to order the part and replace it myself, instead of paying the fee (comparable o other companies, but still not inexpensive).

They came to look at what I thought was a foundation problem, but they said it was not. Provided no other input. As it turned out, it was a leak from the outside that was causing water to drip down the inside wall of my basement. I guess that would constitute a foundation problem. The good news is they were prompt, professional in demeanor and did not charge for coming out when they did not do anything.

The company was very responsive in all communications including the actual service performed. When the technician arrived I indicated what I understood would occur which included a visual inspection of air conditioning equipment accessible via a ladder on the top of the building. The technician inspected the furnace and hot water heater and provided a report of his findings although had he asked me to review the items as he was reviewing them, I would've felt the money would've been better spent. As well, he initially was hesitant to perform any inspection of the AC equipment and there was no evidence that he accessed the equipment since a ladder never entered the unit. Despite this he provided his results about the AC equipment (perhaps in general) and quoted replacement cost for both the furnace and AC unit. While his work was overall professional, I would've appreciated more interaction with him during his inspection so that I could better understand the condition of the equipment he reviewed.

They came out to replace a simple bathroom faucet. They showed up at 8pm. This was at the very end of their appointment time frame. They gave me an estimate of 459$ for the faucet to be replaced. This did not include the new faucet, that I provided . I laughed at the guy and told him no way. I then had another plumber come out to replace it,a and it was recommended by Angies list, and was an Angies Deal. Mr C's Plumbing. They came out and replaced the faucet for 104$ These guys rocked. About 2 years ago Aplewood had done a very good job replacing our old furnace: - excellent product, excellent workmanship and proper price. We have been highly recommending them. BUT... Our niece's 6 yr old furnace had broken down last week. We were paying for the repair. Justin from Applewood arrived at her condo, told us that her furnace was mis-sized , and that it should not & could not be properly repaired. Justin pushed very hard: - She had to instal a new furnace at a "special price" of $5,200, plus more charges on top for electrical work (to be quoted.) We said, "Hold On , not yet". We got quotes for a new furnace from 2 other HAC companies - both were for about $3,600, all electricals included. And both companies said her present furnace was properly sized. In the meanwhile, the Condo Association Manager (who oversees over 108 condo's) had his HAC repairman in , who put in a new circuit board for about $360 total, and the "old" furnace is again working perfectly. We are still distraught that Justin at Applewood HAC had tried to trick an elder lady into buying at inflated prices a new furnace, when the older furnace was easily repaired at a modest price.!

Scheduled an appt. for a furnace check up at our rental apartment across town, over two weeks ago, and mentioned I would be using a coupon they had sent in the mail. I gave my cell phone for them to call. When I did not hear from them by the appt. time (12pm) I checked my home phone voice mail. Earlier in the day they had left a message on that phone (which we rarely use) saying to call them back. So I did, was told that they had called earlier to re-schedule, because two technicians "had the flu" and offered to put me on a waiting list. I declined, as last week they did the same thing for an appt. I had scheduled at my house. (although, the week before it was because the technicians, "got caught up in a big job." Am very disappointed. Since I work from home, not a huge inconvenience, but what a nightmare if I was taking time off work to meet them for an appt. Unacceptable business practices, in my opinion. The only reason I used them without checking here first, was because they replaced a water heater for me about a year ago. That service went O.K., except a rather sky high price. So now I will find someone from here for future work.

Showed on time. Very professional. Took 2 and a half hours to assess and quote job. We were only in town briefly and had many obligations, so, while I thought the price was high I agreed and he started in. Worked that day (went out for lunch)and half the next. he did a good job. My problem is that I paid way too much money. If you estimate about 8 switches and outlets and 4 under cabinet fixtures at around $600.00 i paid about $4000.00 for 9 hours work. I complained to Applewood and they knocked off $660.00. Keep in mind that I joined their club and provided some discount coupons. The price before that was $5400.00. Applewood quotes a specific job (ie replacing a switch, I was told , is $ 194.00) as opposed to an hourly rate. A normal hourly rate is between $75.00 and $125.00. If you do the math you will see I was charged more than that, a lot more. JH
