Animal Rescues/Shelters
I contracted to purchase a chocolate-colored British Shorthair kitten for $1500, and sent a nonrefundable deposit. The kitten was advertised as "show quality". I agreed to drive to Colorado Springs from my home in Montana to get the kitten, and shortly before making those arrangements, I reiterated my desire to show the kitten. Natalia told me the price of $1500 was for a restricted registration [pet only], and to show the cat I would need to pay another $400. She wanted all this money in $100 bills, delivered to her when I picked up the kitten. I agreed to pay the extra amount, because if I had cancelled I would have lost my deposit--but I wasn't pleased to be jerked around. The kitten was in some panic when I got to the pet store to make the purchase, as she had never been in a carrier or been taken outside her cattery before. Trip home was a nightmare for the kitten--she was marginally socialized, difficult to comfort, and cried for hours. She was my only animal from June 5, when she arrived home, until the arrival of an American Exotic kitten at the end of July. She was not exposed to other cats.
Beginning in June when I got her home, Rejinald's Chocolate Mousse suffered from gas and diarrhea on her raw meat diet, and the digestive issues were bad enough that I contacted the seller. Natalia reiterated her holistic healer, raw meat, no veterinarian advice, but otherwise had little insight. I finally took her to a veterinarian, who administered antibiotics to kill the flora in the gut, then probiotics to reestablish a healthy colony. The digestive issues abated within a few days; I replaced the raw meat with a good holistic canned and dry food regimen, but the kitten still failed to thrive. She gained weight slowly, regardless of diet, was very long and lean--definitely not a breed standard and while she was sweet and gentle, she was not very playful. Around six months her lethargy and appearance could not be explained away, and I took her to the vet for a checkup. On October 11, Mousse was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis. Given the kitten's history, the veterinarians concluded that she probably brought the virus with her from the cattery--one of the 10% of kittens born to exposed cats that then develops the full-blown disease. Of course, the Am. Exotic kitten is now compromised as well--he'll either develop the full virus or remain a carrier for the rest of his life. I cannot show him, or introduce another cat into my home, for as long as he lives.
In my communications since, Natalia Foster remains steadfast in her refusal to take responsibility for the health of her cats. She doesn't "believe in" American veterinarians, so of course her cats have had no immunizations, no blood titers to check for FIP exposure. She makes a big, big part of her advice to owners about building up and maintaining the cats' immune systems, and now I know why--cats under stress or cats with compromised immune systems are more likely to develop the deadly phase of the virus. She insists if I had been more open to holistic healers instead of taking my cat to the vet, she could have been saved, but even the holistic healers agree that full blown FIPV is very nearly 100% fatal. Regardless of treatment.
Since June, I've invested more than $3000 in a kitten that was doomed from the outset. That includes vet care. It doesn't include the cost of kitten #2, who is now sentenced to a solitary life. Natalia Foster and Reginald Cattery will get away with selling sick kittens about 90% of the time--9 out of 10 FIP exposed kittens can shed virus and make other cats sick, but don't develop symptoms themselves. Then there's that 10% of the time, when the cattery sells a kitten that blooms with full FIPV and dies, having infected any other cat around it. That's what happened to me. For anyone who claims to be bettering a breed through selective breeding, who claims to be a cat lover, this is outrageous and irresponsible behavior. I'm also contacting the Better Business Bureau for the state of Colorado.
