chimney repair, roofing

After consulting with Angies's List, I called Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors of Broomfield to see if they could help repair a couple of water leaks which appeared to be stemming from my roof. On May 23rd, Andy Rock came to my house in Coal Creek Canyon to look at the problem, inspect the roof, and to provide an estimate for the repairs. Andy, who was very knowledagble, determined the probable cause of the leaks which required replacement of flashing around two chimneys and improving water flow along a roof line. He provided a written estimate for the repairs via e-mail. An initial $500.00 payment was required prior to scheduling the work. On June 19th, a three man team was dispatched to complete the work. The workers were courteous, timely, and understood the repairs that needed to be done. Communications were very good. Cody, the team leader, made sure I was comfortable and knew what they were doing. They did an excellent job and I was particularly pleased with how they redirected waterflow behind one of the two chimneys and in an area that appeared to be a problem area. Their work was neatly done. All in all it was a pleasant experience and I would recommend this company to anyone needing quality roof repairs. After the work was completed, I received the bill with my 10% Angie's List discount. We just had a significant rain storm last night and I am happy to report there was NO (repeat NO) water leakage! One other point, I was given the option to have the stonework on the lower portion of the two chimneys removed via Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors or have the work done myself. Stone removal was necessary prior to replacing the flashing. I chose to have Victor's Stucco & Stone do that work (303-642-0894). I have used this company in the past and have been very pleased with their work. They removed the stone from the two chimneys and returned at a later date to mortar the stones back in.
Description of Work: Installed custom fabricated metal flashings around two chimneys. Redirected water flow & replaced roof shingles as needed. Installed flashing & barrier along a roof line. Installed new rubber boot flashings on plumbing pipes.

The office manager Evie was great about keeping us on an open appointment so that Andy could squeeze us in between other larger projects and meet our tight timelines. He was able to get the work done just in time for our closing. I wish I would have found him earlier and not wasted my time with the other 2 companies. Should I ever have a roof issue in the future, I would call Andy first.
Description of Work: We were selling our home and it came up on the inspection report that there were a couple of damaged shingles that needed to be replaced. After 2 other roofing companies failed to show up for estimate appointments, we were running out of time to meet our deadlines. I found Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors and they were able to help with our short timelines. This was a lifesaver. Failing to get this work completed could've resulted in our not closing on the house.

We were very satisfied with the complete service offered by Andy Rock and Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors. We were able to book an appointment for an estimate within a week or so of when we called. Andy arrived on time, made the effort to understand what we needed and answer our questions, outlined our options, made suggestions and gave us and his recommendations (including some guttering repairs), without pushing anything on us. The subsequent quote came back promptly, and the cost seemed reasonable. We could have gone with someone slightly cheaper but chose Andy for a variety of reasons, one being that he employs his own crew full time, rather than using subcontractors. He was very helpful when we went to pick out a shingle color, kept us informed on scheduling and the likely start date, which was close in time to the estimate he gave us early on. Andy continued to answer all our questions very honestly and openly during the lead up to and throughout the installation, and was frequently on site during the work. His employees worked hard, cleaned up after themselves every day, and were very unobtrusive. The work was completed in the timeframe stated (one day was lost through some unexpected freezing rain that made the roof slippery, so Andy sent his people home as he judged it too dangerous for them to work). The final result was exactly what I was expecting in appearance and finish, and I have experienced no problems with the new roof during the last winter. Overall I am very happy with the work done, and Andy and his colleagues were a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Replacement of existing cedar shingle roof, since it was becoming increasingly difficult to get homeowner insurance with a cedar roof, and it was getting old as well. Roof comprises numerous different angles and slopes. We opted for impact resistant tar shingles having considered all the options. Work included complete underlay (including ice and shield underlay for eaves, valleys, pipes and vents), new metal flashing for the eaves, new flashing for all pipes and vents, installation of a ridge vent for the "older" half of the roof, replacement of a small amount of fascia board, regrading some guttering, and replacement of 3 flues with wind-resistant versions.

UPDATE 7/15/13: (please read the original review below first) 1) Clearly they couldn't have done the work they were hired to do because following a rain storm and noticing the water running off the sides of the gutter, I had to have someone out to them out - they were completely clogged: I was told it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in YEARS... I just bought the house 14 mos ago. 2) Another big rain storm during the weekend of July 12th... roof is leaking - now have big damage to my kitchen ceiling. I'm officially mad. I gave RMRD the benefit of the doubt and they took advantage of me. Will never use this RMRD again, and will tell EVERYONE I know not to use them either. ORIGINAL REVIEW FOR SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER EXPERIENCE: I called immediately to schedule and although they were nice, they were scheduling into early/mid NOVEMBER. So fine - I made my peace with it. I tried to get them to commit to a date in November but they wouldn't (I was informed they had no way of determining their availability). I don't like doing business that way, but I thought, well maybe I need to just chill out a little and go with the flow. I was told to expect a call closer to that time to schedule it. Well, the call came in on November 8th, when I happened to be out of town and they just showed up on November 9th without having heard back from me, and without my permission. So... I don't know if they did a good job or not, and no one ever followed up with me. I did make it clear that I wanted to be present when they came, because I had just purchased this property, it is an old home, and I wanted to verify their findings against the inspection report from the purchase of the house. I knew they came to my house only because I was left with a nice mess in my bathroom (I have a skylight), and somehow their work entailed scraping or something so there was debris all over the floor, toilet and bathtub - something that both freaked me out and annoyed me, (I didn't realize when I first saw the disaster in the bathroom that it had been the roof people - it took me a minute to put 2 & 2 together). Although their intentions may have been good, and I would hope they completed the work honestly, they did not follow my instructions and frankly, I have misgivings about my experience with them, and about giving them a positive rating... hence the "n/a" response to most of the review questions. Would I use them again? doubtful.
Description of Work: On 9/25/12, I purchased a coupon via the Angie's List website that included an inspection of my roof, any needed minor repairs, and gutter cleaning.

We had looked at other roofers but I was impressed by the Angie rating and reviews of the Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors. Andy Rock, the owner, gave us an estimate. I was impressed by his customer manner. The customer come first and he made every effort to meet our needs. He gave us his full attention, something I find lacking with many contractors these days as they have so many demands on their time. We made arrangements to visit his showroom. Andy met us at the showroom and gave us 1 1/2 hours of his time as we worked through samples and displays. He explained each product's pros and cons. As we left he gave us three houses to visit to see products recently installed. Andy made us feel comfortable and I felt he had our best interests in mind. He even made provisions to avoid heavy equipment on our recent concrete work and strip driveway by placing the dumpster on the street. He sent a crew of 10 people for the initial tear-off. We had great communication with the crew. They protected windows and doors from falling debris. First day: tear-off, second and third day: plywood and shingles, fourth day: finish shingles, garage roof and eavestroughs. During this time the carpenter rebuilt the ceiling of the patio adding structural improvements and finishing by painting. The carpenter work was really exceptional. Since it was December, provision was made to cover the patio with tarp and add space heaters to allow the paint to cure properly. At the end of each day, the area was given a thorough cleaning so no debris was left behind. They left the job site in excellent condition. They also contacted our neighbor about work that would intrude on their driveway and paid attention to their driveway to remove all nails and shingle pieces. I must again stress the ease of communication with everyone associated with this job. They were responsive to our requests, made an effort to communicate what was happening and their schedule, and above all they were friendly and helpful. Not only was this true of Andy Rock but it was true of his entire crew. It was a pleasure to have them work on the house. We have since had a couple of problems with leaking eavestroughs. Andy quickly sent a crew to satisfactorily fix the problems.
Description of Work: Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors removed three layers of roof shingles, placed sheets of plywood over roof slats, laid sub-roof sheeting, and installed Legacy Malarkey Shingles. Shingles are rated Class 4 for impact resistance (hail). Work included flashing around chimneys, a peak roof vent, eavestrough and downspouts. The ceiling of the patio was stripped, replaced with tongue-in-groove lumber and painted.

Because of a unexpected financial exspense we are not going to do the work right now but I would call Andy for future projects.
Description of Work: I called 3 different roofing companies all from Angie"s List. Rocky Mtn called back right away and scheduled an appointment for an estimate. The time of the appointment did need to be changed but I was notified in plenty of time. Andy came out two times because we needed our front porch to be covered and it has several different roof lines which makes the design a little complicated. The second visit Andy spent quite a bit of time to come up with a good design. He was always very professional.

RMRD may be great roofers, but I'll never know as they wouldn't even return my call for an estimate. I called on a Wednesday and left a detailed message indicating a full roof replacement was needed and my phone number. I called again on Friday and they picked up (I could briefly hear background talking) and then hung up. I'm betting the hang up was an accident/error. I didn't call back again, as there are hundreds of roofers on Angie's list and clearly RMRD wasn't eager for my job or they are already fully loaded. I know roofers aren't as hungry for small jobs, but my full replacement is single story on a low pitch roof that's going to run $12K...you'd think that would be attractive.

We moved into a home in Boulder and were "greeted" with leaks in two decks/roofs. One deck was over our garage; the other over an outdoor kitchen. Getting people to come out and give opinions on what needed to be done to fix the leaks was difficult. Some companies never returned calls. Another came and looked at the decks but their estimator didn't really install confidence regarding the work that needed to be done to fix the problem. Finally, we found Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors. Andy came and immediately installed confidence that he and his team could fix the problem we were having. Unfortunately, that was in January and applying the fix would have to wait for better weather. Anyway, after months of waiting for appropriate night time temperatures, Andy's guys came out and did the work described above. Unfortunately, they fought some weather as well as some surprises left by the previous owners w.r.t. short-term ill advised fixes to the leak problem. His guys were courteous and left a clean work site. Andy inspected the work himself after everything was done and absorbed the cost of the excess work. RMRD is a company that does good work and has a lot of integrity - two qualities that make it easy to recommend them unconditionally.
Description of Work: Apply elastomeric paint to two second floor decks (roofs) to fix leaks occurring near the interface with the gutter system. The original system was not installed properly and the previous owners of the house did patches to the system to temporarily stop the leaks (maybe) but make a longer term fix more difficult. RMRD had to remove the ill advised patches, install proper mesh patches, primer, etc. as well as many coats of elastomeric paint to create a deck surface that will stay leak free.

Andy was the only vendor ( of three) that not only returned our call but promptly visited the site with an estimate in less than two days. This was in mid January and he estimated possibly February would be the start up date. Due to weather, the date was pushed forward a few weeks. Andy sent out his crew of Johnny, Cody, Larry, Allen and Ahman and it was teamwork and professionalism working side by side. It had been years since we had any roof repair and the super wet storms prior to Christmas and the early February snow really penetrated the very worn roof on the west side of the house. Andy's crew covered shrubs and plants with tarp, stripped the old shingles, replaced plyboard where needed and about four hours later, a great looking roof. They replaced all flashing and went around the entire roof and replaced missing and torn shingles. They cleaned, Andy came by close to finish and gave his seal of approval. Outstanding. We intend to have them finish the rest of the roof and replace the existing chimney cap in the very near future. I have to also add, that Dion, back at his shop called us with updates prior to the installation, letting us know their status and weather delays that they were encountering.

I had Andy come over because we had noticed that in some locations the shingles on our roof did not lay flat but had a wavy look to them. We could see the imprint of the joists. Andy inspected the roof and told me that in these locations, the plywood had de-laminated because of moisture build up under the roofing. We have no attic to vent out water vapor originating from the house. Andy presented several schemes to vent the roof. I sought another opinion and ultimately went with a solution Andy suggested because it allowed us to install additional insulation at the same time. I scheduled the repairs during mid-October with a December start date. Andy called during late December and said they planned to start soon. There was a short delay because some materials were not delivered but the work began during early January, in spite of cold weather and some light snow. The work progressed fairly rapidly and the crew kept the yard relatively neat given the nature of job, snow on the ground and the sometimes cold weather. They were very good about communicating about their progress. The new roof looks great. The venting and insulation added 3" to the roof and they did a great job making it blend into the existing structure. After the roof was completed, the crew spent time cleaning the gutters and the yard and did touch up painting. I'm happy I decided to have Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors do this job.
Description of Work: I had the existing roof removed and decking replaced where plywood had de-laminated from moisture build up under the roofing. Andy's crew installed a insulation and venting system on the deck and then shingles.

I am very pleased with the quality of craftsmanship and service with Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors. In fact, the experience with Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors was excellent from start to finish. After a recent hailstorm, we were in need of a new roof and tear off of old layers. We took our time with research and came across RMRD through Angie?s list. The reviews were quite good, though the common critique was in the area of pricing. Still the rating was enough to inquire. I spoke with owner Andy Rock at length about their business philosophy and approach to the roofing process. While many roofers do come in at a lower price, RMRD uses their own employees and does not use subcontractors. This was important to me as I wanted my purchase to support a local business and local employees. Fully insured, they pay their staff by the hour and go the extra mile to insert extra quality into the installation. For me this helped to reinforce the decision, and I found it to be true on the job?their employees put a little extra care into what their work. Andy did a pre-install analysis of our property and suggested what would be the best option for our needs, but also offered alternate suggestions to fit a range of pricing options. He was very patient with my questions, personable, and flexible. RMRD were prompt with communications, their team was efficient and effective with installation of the new roof. After the work was completed, Andy took me on a walkthrough and was able to see first-hand the quality. Moreover, the county inspector mentioned that he was impressed with the craftsmanship?to me this was a reassuring testimonial. 1 year later and we are very pleased with the work of RMRD, I highly recommend them as a great company to consider for your home?s roofing needs.

First I would like to thank the customer for working with us and for taking the time to post her opinion on Angie’s list. However, to see this review was a little shocking after and e-mail from her on 11/2/11, where I quote her as saying “Don't worry, I won't tell Angie's List about you. Most people figure out eventually that Angie is in it to serve herself too. That's America today.” We strongly encourage our client’s to voice their opinions, good or bad, with regards to our company. I am still working with the customer to ensure a positive resolution to any concerns she may have and sincerely apologize that she is not happy with how her project has progressed. Our number one goal when working with clients is to make sure they are 100 % satisfied with the work we complete on their projects. We believe in maintaining an exceptional level of quality and craftsmanship in our work, and train all of our staff to do the same. There are some misleading statements facts in the review of our company. First, she states that we put down her new roofing system on a wet roof. We did have some moisture the day prior to starting the project, so I personally, as the owner, met my crew on the job site and personally inspected the roof. The roof was 100% dry before, during and after the installation process. I do know delaying the project can be and was frustrating to the client, but it must be done in order to ensure quality of the project. Had the roof been wet, I certainly would have delayed the project until the roof was dry, for the client’s and my protection and to ensure quality. We provide each client a proposal of scope work to be completed and we line out in detail the scope of work to be completed line by line for every project. We encourage the client to ask any questions before signing the proposal into contract, so there are no misunderstandings. In this case we proposed to do the project for $1,575.00 with a down payment of $500.00, leaving a final balance of $1,075.00 to be paid when project was complete. We invoiced for the balance of $1075.00, so we are not sure where she feels she is being charged and additional $75.00 that we will not disclose. If you are reading this, you can be assured we are very proud of our craftsmanship and though we are not perfect, given the opportunity we will try to make "it" right. Our company’s goal is to make sure all clients are always 100% satisfied as it is our reputation on the line. Please take the time to also look at all the past reviews posted on Angie’s list, as we do value our client’s opinions.

This project took much longer than I think that Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors thought it would, or that I thought it would. As it turned out it was not so much a delay of whether because we only two days of afternoon rain, however the roof took approximately 7 days to complete even though it's not a very large house. What happened is that the workers encountered a lot of what they call"eyebrows and elevations that were on the house in various places around the house. This job they did in these elevations was very very well done and very neat and complete. I do not think that when the estimate was made that they thought about this particular issue and how much more will be involved parheticularly with the high quality of roofing material that was going to be used. Nonetheless I highly recommend Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors, because they stand behind their words and the estimate that they gave me despite the fact that it took much longer than they thought. The job is of very high quality and I believe that anyone who sees it will see that this is a outstanding organization. The roofing material is very highest quality, 50 year/lifetime warranty and will provide a selling point for the house when we put it on the market, and it looks spectacular invoking the "Scottish Slate" appearence for which it is named.
Description of Work: The Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors provided a complete replacement of an existing wood thatch shingle roof. This roof had been seriously damaged by hail as well as screens and to some extent gutters as well. Initially my first experience with Rocky Mountain Roof Drs. was in the estimation process for repair. .They came out on a timely basis and proposed a approach to repairing the shingle shake roof. It became clear however as Andy had advised, that the roof will really needed to be replaced because the wide disbursement of shingle damage that which would've made it difficult to repair without damaging other singles. When after six months of dickering, and three inspectors of our insurance companies choice had come out, two of which had rendered a decision that the roof was a total loss and he was also invited to give a quotation on his proposal. RMRD recommended a lifetime warranty roofing product that is absolutely stunning on our house and that has complete water and ice shielding and gutters that match window trim, from which I painted in the previous summer season What is also very important to mention about Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors, is that the supervisor inspector for our insurance company expressed great respect for the quality of the work of the company and their reputation and thoroughness and their quotations. I believe that one of the reasons we did not have as much trouble in the final analysis with the complete roof replacement by the insurance company is because we did work with this recommended company/person from Angie's list.

Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors Inc They were terrific ! I can't speak highly enough about them. They had the lowest bid. Gave us a fair price, with an Angie's List 5% discount. The crew was extremely nice and, very polite. There was a half a dozen of them, they had to cut and form the gutters. Then some left, and others stayed behind and, installed the gutters, and vents to the roof. Cleaned up after themselves. They got the job done in one afternoon. The owner even called me a couple days later, to see if we were satisfied with everything. I thought that was just dandy ! They are wonderful ! I would recommend them.
Description of Work: Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors Inc They put on new gutters and vents. They were here just last week. It cost $1830.

Andy and his crew were very professional and easy to deal with. It took a couple of weeks to get on the schedule. They called a few days before to tell me they would start on 7/6. The crew scraped off the old roof, put down the underlayment and ice barrier and installed the Solar-Tube the first day. The shingles were delivered the following morning and the roofing was finished by 3 that afternoon. They cleaned up the area well. On Friday I was talking to the office when I realized we had all forgotten the shed. Andy sent two of the crew out Saturday to complete that. It was. overall. a very good experience and I would definately recommend this company. I love the look of the dimensional shingles and knowing, with the lifetime warrenty, I won't have to worry about my roof for as long as I'll be in this house.
Description of Work: Original builder used a sub-standard organic asphalt shingle which needed to be replaced after just 16 years. I had 3 bids and RMRD was the middle bid. I picked them because I thought the quality of their products was better than the other two and Andy bought samples and answered all my questions. They use a fiber reinforced synthetic roof underlayment which seemed a lot more durable than felt paper. The other bids used felt paper. I was able to pick an Energy-Star rated shingle which should help with air-conditioning costs. I also had them install a Solar-Tube light in my upstairs hall bathroom, as well as put matching shingles on my 6X6 shed in the backyard. The Solar-Tube looks great and I'm very happy I had it done.

The project was delayed many times by inclement weather. Andy's office staff kept me informed on the latest schedule. The project took 3 days to complete. New vent boots were installed and all projections thru the roof were painted to match the color of the shingles. I asked the crew for some minor changes to the drip edge, and they were happy to make the change. The crew that worked on the project are permanent employees of Roof Doctors and were courteous and professional during the construction stage of the project. All waste material was collected and parts of the wall were touched up with paint. The city inspector passed the roof with no comments. I would recommend Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors for any roofing project.
Description of Work: The roof on my house was 20 years old and ready for replacement. I contacted four contractors for bids to do a total roof replacement on the house. Andy (Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors) inspected the roof and offered a bid. The bid was comparable to the bids from the other contractors. The roofing project also included the gutters and the city permit. I also wanted the chimney flashing re-caulked and weather collar installed. This was added to the project scope. The roofing material was manufactured by Certainteed, specifically the Landmark style. Andy is certified by the Certainteed company for installing their product. The underlayment and roof venting were specified by the Certainteed company-- Andy followed the specs and added venting to the house roof. The underlayment was an engineered material with sealing on the first 3 feet of the material from the edge of the roof.

It went well. The only recommendations I have are that you have to be proactive and check in with them about scheduling, and check to make sure they didn't forget to do anything. They forgot two small things on my house, but they were very understanding and fixed both issues within 10 days. Here's the whole story: I emailed them through their website in early April. They called the next day and set up an appointment for the following week. The owner came out and looked at the roof. He gave me a lot of details on the PVC roof and invited me to an open house at his new show room. I went and was able to see the products they would use. That was helpful, and he answered all my questions and I felt he was being honest. I chose them because the owner had a lot of experience with flat roofs, and because the PVC roof seemed the best choice for a flat roof. The other main contender was also a good company with a similar price, but they were recommending EPDM, which isn't expected to last as long as the PVC roof. I didn't have any other PVC roof offers to compare prices, but the PVC has a good warranty, so that seemed worth the price. After I signed the contract and sent it to them, I got a response saying they'd received it and would be in touch about scheduling, but I didn't hear back for a couple of weeks. I had to email them a few times to find out when they would schedule the work. I was out of town for 10 days, so that was part of the delay. They finally did the work on June 7. The crew was friendly and professional. They didn't goof off or play loud music. They seemed to do a good job, and they cleaned up fairly well. The roof passed the inspection the first time. After they left, I went to have a look around. There were two small items they forgot to fix: They had left part of one of my original gutters and downspout, but they had disconnected them so the gutter was draining through the hole straight to the ground instead of into the downspout. They also broke off a small piece of trim in order to fit the gutter in a corner. I immediately emailed the company to ask about these issues, and they responded right away. The owner made an appointment to come out and look the following week. He acknowledged that the issues needed to be fixed and he sent the guys back out the following week to fix the issues. Now everything is done and I'm happy to have a roof that's not leaking.
Description of Work: They replaced my old, leaky, flat garage roof with a PVC roof. They added a taper system to slope the roof toward the back so water would be less likely to pond, and they added a gutter all along the back and a new downspout. It's a small, 1-car garage with a small breezeway.

After a roof leak appeared in the kitchen, I called Rocky Mountain Roof Doctor. Andy Rock was very responsive, showed up when promised and was very professional. He went onto the roof and identified where he thought where the leak might be. He pulled up some tiles and took pictures. He said he wouldn't be able to repair the leak until mid September because of his work load (it was a busy time of the year). Andy said if that wasn't the spot of the leak, they would have to take up most of the roof in that area and apply a new underlayment. On the scheduled date in September, two Roof Doctor workers showed up and performed a "repair" where Andy had identified. Months later when it started to rain again, I went into the attic to check a bucket I had placed under the area where water had been infiltrating. It was full. Obviously the leak was not fixed. Not wanting to tear up the whole roof, I called Stellar Roofing in April 2011. We identified where the leak was by running water over the roof in areas where leaks are possible. After the repair, we confirmed that the leak had been fixed by repeating the water test. I believe I paid too much for a job that was not done correctly. However, I hesitated to call Roof Doctors back because of his estimate that they would have to remove a major portion of the roof to find and repair the leak.
Description of Work: Repair a leak in a concrete tile roof.

Response from Rocky Mountain Roof Doctors Inc
It’s unfortunate that the member did not make any attempt to contact us and give us an opportunity to resolve the problem. We certainly would have made every attempt to rectify the problem. When diagnosing leaks it can be a bit difficult and we certainly would have worked with him to ensure his 100% satisfaction. In our initial visit it was mentioned that we “may” have to tear off the roofing system and do additional underlayment. The word “may” is an operative word letting our client know that should the repair we do, not resolve the issue, that we will come out and work with them to analyze the problem and that we might have to go to some lengths to fix the leak. In the first part of this review he indicates he was very pleased with our professionalism and craftsmanship. We feel he certainly would not have had a negative out come, had he allowed the opportunity for us to come back and go over the project, after he noticed the leak. In addition the price for the scope of work that was completed was very reasonable. If you are reading this, you can be assured we are very proud of our craftsmanship and though we are not perfect, given the opportunity we will try to make "it" right. Our company’s goal is to make sure all clients are always 100% satisfied as it is our reputation on the line.
