I am a business owner and because I believe in the idea behind KARMA, I decided to book them.
I am so sad to report that just about everything went wrong from there.
1. The first thing I was told when they arrived was that I needed to pay cash because their credit card machine was broken. I found out later that this was a lie told by the driver. They just wanted cash even though paying by credit card was always an option.
2. They charge a 5% fee if you want to use credit cards. It says 5% on the front of their contract and it says 4% on the back of the contract. They should read their own contracts. Seeing as how most credit card companies charge an average of 2.5%, this is a money maker for them.
3. They destroyed one of our new desks completely. The mover tried lifting the desks by the legs only and of course, it gave. Any professionally trained mover would not have done this. They immediately blamed it on us and was belligerent about it. In fact the mover refused to notify their manager when I asked him to do so over 5 times. Basically, the movers said that our desk was cheap and made of particle board (it states in their contract). They took ZERO responsibility. The desk was not cheap. It was not an "IKEA" like the way they kept describing it. Be careful... unless ALL your furnishing are made of solid wood, they will take ZERO responsibility. Seeing as how 99% of furniture manufactured these days is made with some particle board or compressed wood, the consumer is basically screwed with this loop hole they have created for themselves. Look around your homes of offices, are ALL of your furnishings solid wood???
Nevertheless, this desk did not break because it was poorly made, it broke because of the way it was handled.
4. When I expressed my dissatisfaction, they finally called their boss. Their manager called me and said that they would give me $45 for my $200 desk and that he would waive the 5% fee for credit cards. The machine was miraculously working now and the manager admitted to me the driver lied to me to get paid ASAP. I guess they get paid same day if we pay cash. The catch of the $45 and 5% fee waiver offer was that -- I HAD TO SIGN A WAIVER SAYING THAT I WOULD NOT LEAVE A REVIEW ON ANGIE'S LIST. Of course I said NO. The amount became $90 later. I still said NO. My integrity, ethics and honesty was not for sale at $90. Although I appreciated their offer to do something, their approach was not ethical and in good faith. Take care of the customer! Do that first and the rest will take care of itself. It this case, they wanted to force me to tell a lie. I refused their unprofessional offer that came with ethical handcuffs. I paid full price instead. By the way, this contractual approach to handling dissatisfied customers made me concerned about the accuracy of their ratings.
5. Quality of the move was bad in general. Walls scratched up. Fragile items not properly wrapped during the move including two large screen TVs that was left with scratches at the base. And leather couches left with scratches and chips at wood trim finishes... again because they weren't even wrapped.
6. The move of this small office took over 8 hours. I have moved entire houses in less time. Pace was not slow but not terribly fast either. Their pace was so so. I have had experiences with other companies that were much more energetic and motivated about getting things done faster. Perhaps, it's because they work by the hour.
7. After the move, we discovered that they had damaged a second desk. We will have to repair it to use it safely.
KARMA implies "what comes around goes around" or in simpler terms, "do the right thing". Essentially, that's all we were asking for. The owner and the manager saw fit to do far less than that. So... Karma is just marketing talk for them. Too bad.
I understand others might have had a good experience with them.
We did not and as a result, we would not recommend this mover to anyone.
"Hello [Member], Thank you for your feedback. It is important for us to know how our guys did their job. Looks like you were not satisfied with the service and I am having a hard time trying to find your address in our system. Can you please let us know who were the movers? Or what's your contact number so our manager can call you to see how we can fix this? Thank you Alan Jay"
Before they started moving things we walked them through the house to go over what we needed to move. The movers were very clear about how they timed the move (because they charge by the hour) and their need for breaks which was completely understandable because of the strenuous nature of the job.
The movers worked very efficiently and at a steady pace. We finished our move in less than 5 hours. We really appreciated all their hard work. They were careful with our belongings and were aware of fragile items.
Packing day; No major problems, arrived on time, and spent 4 hours packing up the house. Some small items to watch, opened boxes of baking powder and the like should be checked to be closed and sealed in a ziploc bag or equivelent, two of these items in our packing list were not done like this and we had baking powder and corn starch all over the contents of two of the boxs. Otherwise the packing was pretty much uneventful and completed well in order. Nothing broken or lost.
Moving day; This was a day of mayhem. I will start by going through the day and at the end write the info I found out after the days events....
Scheduled to start at 9am, they arrived at 11am. This single event completely screwed up the timing of the move and the planned days activities, as a result we were not able to fit 2 trips into the day as originally planned, and had to leave 1 whole truck load at the old house. Thankfully most of the stuff was in boxes and moving the items into the truck went pretty much to plan. To help get the move back on time, the Company sent along an additional mover for 2 hours no charge, and while there was some drama in getting the stuff into the truck, the load process took about 3 hours.
Arrival at the new house: The guys arrived no problem and were able to get the truck unloaded in about 2 hours. Everything for the most part ended up were is needed to be, so there were no issues with the unload.
Overall: I still have to move a truck load of stuff from the old house, but will probably just rent a truck and get some day laborers to do it. In talking with the Dispatcher on the phone it appears that their "team leader" was on vacation for this month and this may have lead to the confusion between the workers when loading the truck and the dispather himself was in Oregan unable to affect any real change. The Company did offer me a 75$ discount that we appreciated, but still overall moving day not a good day, and I would have MUCH prefered to have it go well than to be offered a discount.
Overall they crew needs some leadership on the job and some support from the home office to make all of this work. Starting late by two hours definitely killed the planned days events, the workers are all personable and are willing to work hard, so there is no problem with any of them, the problem I saw overall was just a lack of leadership with logistics and execution.
"Thank you for your feedback, and we are very sorry that we could not meet your expectations. No excuses, but there were indeed specific circumstances on that day. We have learned from that and improved our service for our future customers."
