the estimator was the brother of owner mark. he was fast with little to no explanation. he's not so personable but he seems to know exactly what he is doing since i ended up with the same type of skylights as the more chatty estimators at other roofing companies. i got three estimates and excelsior came in the lowest about three hundred dollars lower even with coupons at the other companies. when i called to tell them i would like to go with them, they came in the next day and installed the skylights. it was the most painless and fastest work i have done on the house. richard who worked on the skylights even called me when he was done to explain the work he did and the things he could not clean up. i appreciated this folllow-up.

After a long rainy season they got to us quickly and professionally installed the new roof. We had a couple small issues that were quickly addressed to our satisfaction. Good communicators through the process. They understood the scope of the project right out of the gate. Other competitive bids required clarification to their scope letters.

Excelsior did a great job for my roof maintenance project. Their estimate was very well prepared. I sought our several estimates and Mark Powers estimate provided the best assessment in terms of what work was needed to address the problems with my roof. No extraneous or unnecessary scope was included. His estimate was thorough and detailed and he took the time to go over the proposal with me at the time of inspection and on the phone. Marko and his assistant performed the work with professionalism, was thorough, communicated well and Marko instilled confidence in me that he was on top of the tasks that needed to be done. He also is a very nice guy.

They were very, very good. I have recommended them to people. They put up all of the scaffolding, and it was a complete downpour. It was a very complicated roof. They were the high bid by a small percentage. They quickly identified issues with the roof when they inspected. They were prompt and responsive to phone calls.

I've had this wall/roof leak problem for several years. This year it became much worse. A number of contractors and roof people have been to look at it. One suggested better paint on the wall above the leak -- which didn't help. Another bid $20,000 to fix the leak by removing a the roof near the leak and replacing it. (Roofing the entire house cost less than that!). None of these experts actually explained to me exactly what was leaking or why. The $20,000 guy -- a contractor with one lousy Angie's List report -- said he was one of three people in the entire Bay Area who had the expertise to fix the problem. He brought in a roofer -- who has a series of very good Angie's LIst reports -- to look at the problem. Neither was able to explain the exact problem to me. But they were sure willing to take my money! Along comes Excelsior. He clearly explained the likely source of the leak. His explanation fit with all the evidence -- why the leak only occurs at certain times under certain conditions, etc. It appears nothing needs to be done immediately beyond the caulk. Assuming that does the trick, there may be a further bit of work to make that fix permanent. $20,000 vs. $150? Yow! It pays to get a second or third opinion!

Great. Estimate process was detailed and precise. I had to call back to have him change the estimate to make it line up with others (for example, they were going to use a higher grade of shingle than I wanted to use). Mark Powers, the owner, was flexible and communicative. I got much more detail from him than from other companies, which hand-waved over some of the complexities of the job. Excelsior also got back to me when they said they would in all cases, unlike other companies which I'd had to nag repeatedly to even get an estimate. Excelsior was scrupulously honest and detailed and very precise about both the general nature of the job and the specific issues at my house. For example, my Victorian has decorative ledges covered with sheet metal that was rusting, and that made the front look really bad. Mark and I talked about this and he gave me various options for fixing them, some of which his company could do and some of which I'd get someone else to handle. When the scaffolding went up, Mark went up and examined the ledges and told me that they were not as bad as he'd thought, and told me to get a painter to go up and fix them. This was much cheaper than what I'd been prepared for--what a relief. After I accepted the proposal, Mark figured out how to handle certain awkward situations with the neighbors. For example, he had the guys build a little platform to protect the "valley" between my house and the house next door (this is in SF where the houses abut each other and the "seam" between them is vulnerable). I appreciated his communication skills, creativity, and attention to detail, and that he put his mind to solving problems, rather than trying to make everything fit a formula. While looking at the "valley," Mark found a seam of my house that wasn't closed (the siding didn't touch the cap) and offered to caulk it. Of course this isn't roofing, but it definitely had caused leaks, and I would never have been able to get up there, nor could any other worker, so his kindness was appreciated. I'd always wondered why the plaster was cracking at just a certain position--and now I knew. The work was done on time, with lots of communication about schedule, etc. Mark warned me in advance about anything that might cause a negative reaction on my part so I was totally prepared. E.g., he told me how noisy the scaffolding set-up would be and that there would be some smaller debris in the attic afterward even though the guys would clean out the larger pieces, so I shouldn't be shocked if I needed to clean up afterward. This all seemed reasonable and was--roofing his a big, heavy job, and they were super responsible and cleaned a lot every day before leaving--even sweeping my sidewalk every day, better than I seem to be able to do! The workers were great, Mark was available by phone and there was a responsive foreman and what seemed to be a sub-foreman on the site. I felt comfortable with the crew and happy to have well-known union laborers who knew what they were doing. They also did some extras for me without making a big deal of it, some of which they offered without my even thinking of it or asking. Roofing is a big job and so important to the integrity and well-being of your house. I was glad that I hadn't chosen strictly on the bottom line and had hired such a good company. I was repaid many times over after the new roof was finished and a few days later, there was a soaker rain for many hours. My old house didn't leak for the first time in 16 years. I strongly recommend this company and would use them again without hesitation if I ever moved. Oh, and they have a Facebook page--"like" them and see all the work they are doing throughout the Bay Area.

The big difference was that Excelsior did not try to talk me into extremely expensive gutter work, as did the other service. I felt confident that the gutter repair that Bill offered would be just fine and that the expensive alternative was unnecessary. Because this was a family business that had been around for a long time, and because of the detailed examination of my roof and all the information Bill gave me, I felt complete confidence that any work they performed would be very good and that they would stand by their guarantee. Ultimately I chose a smaller outfit that gave me a lower estimate, which fortunately worked out fine. But in five years or so I will definitely go back to Excelsior to see if it is time for the major re-roofing job and, if they are the same business at that time, I intend to contract with them for the job.

We saw evidence of water penetration in a back stairwell. Excelsior Roofing came out within a day to take a look. Not only they looked at the small section of the flat roof but they looked at the whole roof for an other problems. He reported he didn't see anything else but that a couple of areas around some pipes needed caulking. This was a good experience. I will use them again.

They were outstanding. They used quality materials, they did a terrific job, and the roof looked great after they finished. They were very efficient. The owner came out to look at the job. Their price was a little bit higher but they do a superior job so it is justified.

Mark was very professional and responsive. He provided us a prompt estimate via email. His prices were comparable to the other estimates for this job. The crew arrived on time, announced themselves and proceeded to work. And, they cleaned everything up.

This was a tricky problem, and they solved it. The leak was somewhere around a skylight on a small flat roof area. Mark Powers, the company president inspected the area, and figured out what needed to be done to end the leakage, and get the roof to drain properly. He sent us a written description of the work, together with an estimate of the cost. He warned us about the possibility of debris falling through the skylight area during the job and urged us to cover the area. Because this was a relatively small job, he contractor did not require a down payment. The crew arrived on time and completed the work on the same day. The roofing compound had a strong smell for several days after the job was completed. I called them and Mr. Powers explained the cause, assured me it should go away after a while, and told me to call him if it persisted. These people could write the book on professionalism and expertise!

They did a fabulous job, quick clean and professional.

They were fine and their prices were very reasonable. I checked out their references on Yelps and they had received great recommendations. I called them and they came the next week to do the job, and it was fine working with them. They were prompt and on time, unlike most contractors who would give you a time and wouldn?t turn up. I would rate them highly and would use them in the future.

I ended up not using them as I received a lower bid from someone else. They were excellent though and I do plan on using them when I need a full roof done.

It went very well overall. Everything seemed on time and coordinated. The workers were efficient and professional. i had to leave before they finished and when I came home everything was finished and clean .

I called about the leak on a Monday morning and left a message. Mark called me back later that day and scheduled an appointment for Tuesday morning for his brother to look at the roof in person. He said that it was a minor repair (quoted $720) and said that they would schedule something when the rain stopped. The rain stopped the next day and I got a call at 7am asking if he could come by at 10am. They completed the work that day and then I received the bill soon after in the mail. All in all, fairly painless. They don't do inside work like drywall repair, however.

Exceptional; very smooth, predictable and he and his team did outstanding work, above and beyond the call of duty. I actually went by his office and saw his outfit, very professional. You won't go wrong, I can assure you. Mark is top-notch!

It went generally well. Both the estimator and the workers were on-time. The work seemed to be performed well. The work crew was a bit less than professional - I overheard one yelling at the other for showing up drunk to the job. Not comforting when people are crawling around on your roof. In the end though they did a decent job for a good price.

The job was completed efficiently and clean. Very friendly people and seem to know what they're doing.

It was fine. They brought a super crew out of ten men and did all the work in one day, like they said they would. They were professional and they cleaned up well. The contract was for the amount.

I phoned Excelsior Roofing. Mark Powers phoned me back the same day. He sent someone out to measure the skylight. I talked to Mark and ordered a domed skylight. He said it would arrive in 3 weeks. It was installed in 2 weeks. Looks great and the house is much warmer now.

Great. It was the rainy season, but they came out and examined it right away and they fit me in as soon as the skylight order came in. Was done in a few hours, they cleaned the stained glass underneath the new skylight bubble, and rebuilt the skylight frame, which they said was too close to the roofline on one side. They've also replaced a roof on my back porch and done some roofing for my neighbors (which is how I found them). In each case the work was great and prompt.
