THE GOOD: The 8" crown molding is beautiful. We love the look. Most of their employees were good, professional, personable. (It was, however, a revolving door of faces; the crew changed frequently. And they weren't here every day.)
THE BAD: The job was estimated at 1-2 weeks; they were here a month. When it came to finishing seams, the job dragged on and on and on. (Finishing involves caulking and painting corners and seams on long walls where two pieces of molding are pieced together.) Their finisher was sloppy, dripped paint all over, and did very poor work. Even after I asked the finisher (and the supervisor) to use a drop cloth or otherwise protect my home, I saw paint drips every day. Each night I would go around after him to clean up paint and cut drips out of the carpet. Multiple days I needed to move the finisher?s wet, sweating lunch cup off one piece of furniture or another in order not to have water rings. The worst part was that the seams looked really, really bad - bumpy and uneven caulking which had been painted over. The first attempt at seam finishing was laughable, with patching material left so rough, when it was painted over the seams were super obvious. My husband and I needed to complain seam-by-seam to get them to work the seams to our satisfaction. So they would sand them down and try again. And again. For a few days they sent a guy with really good skills to work seams, and things looked up, but he suddenly disappeared, and the really bad finisher just kept on botching and botching... One of the last days ?on the job? the finisher slept half the day in my front yard. We eventually just asked them to leave us be - we were tired of the mess, the drips, and not seeing improvement on seams. We just wanted our house back.

Notable: We have a sort of rotunda at the entrance of our master bedroom, and bendable molding was used. The bendable molding was patched so that there is about a six inch section inserted. Because of the stiffness of the rubbery, bendable material, the six inch patch does not arc similar to the rest of the round. Instead it looks like a straight patch. The result is that there are two obvious seams on either side of the patch. I pointed this out to Danny, and he said that was the best that could be done. I assert that if the molding had been cut properly, it would not have been patched, and the seams not so obvious. The particular placement of the ?double seam? ? directly opposite the entrance ? puts it in the most obvious place. I was not happy with the result here; but can live with it. We have since installed a different light fixture, and the error is not so obvious.

THE UGLY: About six months after they finished the original job, the corners and seams began to pop open. (Danny said this might happen, not to be alarmed, just call the office to have them come back.) So I called in, and asked the office not to send the same nightmare finisher. No problem, they said. Clearly they did not send their A-team to address the cracks. The two guys started complaining almost immediately about how little they were being paid to fix the problems. Not a good sign. They were here one day. The corners look ok (easy to patch), but the seams along the big walls look really bad. It looks like they caulked, and then painted with a dry brush before the caulking was dry and dragged the caulking into the wet paint and across the molding. So now the (1/4 to 1/2 inch) cracks look like cottage cheese was used to fill them. The goopy bumpiness is several inches wide in some places. Did I mention their contractor chewed me out for "involving the office" when I answered honestly how things went? Wow, not cool.
-
BOTTOM LINE: Crown molding is for looks ? it needs to look smooth in appearance with a consistent semi-gloss finish. Not goopy and bumpy at the seams. Unfortunately, SoCal Home Remodeling struck out. Bottom line is that I gave up and will get the seams fixed with another contractor. And leave this review on Angie's List.
They promised to complete the work in two weeks, it took eight and a half weeks to finish it not including the painting which I did myself. They started on time and were there everyday for the first two weeks making progress. Then they stopped showing up on time. Sometimes one worker was here, sometimes no one showed up. The crew spoke only Spanish and the foreman was the translator. The problem was that the foreman was never there. I saw him three times in eight and a half weeks. As a result the crew was constantly doing the work wrong then tearing it out wasting time and materials. One worker put in a very expensive mosaic backwards twice before I finally reached the project manager who offered to pay to tear out all the tile and replace it. That was great but took another two weeks.
The quality of the tile installation is very poor. I can see holes in the thin set behind the glass tile. Tiles and grout lines are uneven. I waited for them to reorder tile twice. They were very sloppy. They cut tile inside of the house. There was plaster dust everywhere. By the time they were finished I didn't care about the quality of the work, I just wanted them out of my house.
This was one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a contractor. The price was great, and they did finally complete the project. Don't forget what your mother told you, "You get what you pay for."

I have contracted SoCal in order to perform a full bathroom and kitchen remodeling on an older (seventies) build.
The bidding phase went perfectly fine and, refreshingly, I wasn't pushed into signing, and the price was perfectly okay. I strongly believe in NOT choosing the cheapest fly by night contractors anyways so I was ready to sign.
After selecting my choices of tiles, wood, paint and cabinets, the project was started. Workers were somewhat punctual and respectful to the property.
Other than few minor corrections (i.e. one of the cabinet doors wasn't shutting properly and one kitchen tile was nicked) I was very pleased with how this project went as well as with the final product. Not having to deal with damaged piping and wiring (happens more than you would think when remodeling a kitchen) was a big plus. Cleanup was fast and somewhat thorough.
All in all, a job well done.
SoCal Remodeling hires unskilled laborers to do all the work from start to finish, including plumbing and electrical work, without any real supervision. The laborers were making decisions about how and where to install jet tub, where to install access panel for jet tub, selecting and purchasing shower door, where to install vanity, etc. etc. They do very shoddy work and unfortunately, in most cases did not use very good judgment.
To the owner's credit, once I brought the problems to his attention, he did attempt to fix what was fixable, but they continually sent the same type of worker, who came in, did more shoddy work, fixed some stuff, while creating other problems, causing more delay and more stress. Because of all the mistakes they continually made by cutting holes in the wrong places, placing the plumbing in wrong places, etc., they completely trashed my walls. I could go on and on with all the damage they have done. I recently asked them to stop the work, as I did not see any happy end in sight. The owner was not happy about that and although they have clearly performed substandard work, he wants me to pay him for work they have not performed. He has said that they have lost money on this job. This is not through any fault of my own and I believe I have lost much more than they have.
I have had to hire new people to come in and finish the work. Needless to say, I would not recommend this company for any job whatsoever.
I contracted SoCal for a interior paint job for my 2br 2ba.
Everything went smoothly. I was presented with a LOT of color swatches so picking the color scheme was fun.
The price was fair and the crew was on time. They left no mess whatsoever which is a huge plus in my book.
Overall, a very stress-free, positive experience.
