Roy was extremely professional throughout this process. When he first came to my house to provide a price quote, I didn't feel like he was trying to overcharge. The price for biobarrier was a standard $25 per linear foot, including materials and labor--no hidden fees or other confusing stuff. He was actually concerned about having the price go too high, and helped me to determine the most appropriate length for the project to prevent wasteful spending. I questioned two other arborists last year about doing this project, and one of them wanted to charge approximately 40 percent more for this job, while the other agreed to do it for $400, but had never pruned roots before, nor had he ever installed a biobarrier. I am SO GLAD that I waited and hired Roy to do this. I would highly recommend him to other people who are dealing with root problems, because he really knows what he's doing and he's honest. His crew was prompt, polite, and tidy with their work. He also offered me discounts, 5 percent for using Angie's List and 5 percent for being a military family. The cherry on top is that he accepted credit card payment, which means that I get points for making this purchase.
Description of Work: Roy and his crew of three other men dug an 18-inch deep trench along my fence for 48 feet to cut off tree roots that pass onto my neighbor's property, as well as install an 18-inch-deep "biobarrier" to prevent root re-growth. He re-arranged my sprinkler system to accommodate this work, and when it was finished he placed the dirt back in the ditch and packed it down flat again.

I got this referral from Angie's List. Called and made an appointment. Roy was very punctual and professional and spent alot of time answering my questions, with an estimate given on the spot. I asked Roy to come out about a week later, to answer some questions and he helped me make a decsion on how to trim back the ficus trees to promote new growth. I accepted the new estimate and set the date for the work to be done, within 2 days. On the day the work was to be done, Roy and his fellow workers arrived a bit early and were ready to go with two large trucks and plenty of equipment. Once again Roy and I walked the job and discussed the work, as he wanted to be sure what we wanted done. We even went to the neighbors on both sides, met them and discussed Roy working in their yards to trim our trees. I came home at noon, most of the work had been completed, again we walked the job, I was very satisfied. I came back home at 5:00 and all the work was done, and all debris removed, sidewalks swept, every shred was cleaned up!!!! Roy arrived promptly at 5:00 to get his payment as we planned. All in all a very pleasant experience. A trust worthy man, who seems to be very interested in customer satisfaction. A big plus is his knowledge, being an Arborist. He seemed to know exactly how to cut and trim the trees to promote growth over the next few years. I plan on asking him to retrim our trees when they need it. A solid A+ Contractor!
Description of Work: Took down one large tree, cleaned out ivy from evergreens and fertilized, trimmed 8 ficus trees back by over 10 feet in height, trimmed palm tree, hedge trimmed and cleaned deadwood from two medium size trees.

Roy is a pleasure to work with. He's easy to get in touch with (leave message, he calls you back), comes on time, does the work as promised, and cleans up beautifully. He loves trees, and was very willing to give me advice and recommendations for the trees on my property. I've used him several times before and would certainly use him again.
Description of Work: Roy removed 4 large cypress trees in my back yard, ground 'em up, ground out the stumps, and hauled everything away. He also replanted one small cypress tree.

We'd been in need of tree trimming for some time to remove branches encroaching on the eaves of our two-storey home. After receiving a 'cold-call' and quote from another company we sought Angies's recommendation. The phone experience with Schwartz tree service was pleasant, courteous and the response prompt. I met with Mr. Schwartz who inspected our property, delivered a lower quote and even scheduled additional branch clearing by our electricity utility (the crown of some trees had infiltrated overhead power lines). On the day of the job we had a major storm, but the crew arrived on time, worked diligently and professionally completing the job in within the time-frame that was quoted. I was VERY impressed. The job was perfectly done and the results very pleasing (our interiors have so much more light now). Expecting our back and side-yards to be littered with leaf and branch debris, I found everything clean and spotless! Mr. Schwartz and crew had even removed leaf litter that had accumulated over months had been removed. I recommend Schwartz's tree service with enthusiasm and without hesitation.
Description of Work: Tree trimming on more than 20 three, over 20 ft high on the perimeter of our residential property, removal of ground vegetation and debris.

He has been very helpful, reliable, and professional. He goes above and beyond what is expected of him. I never have a hard time getting in touch with him. Roy always cleans up after his work and is careful about protecting the existing plantings. He is very responsive, easy to work with, and I would definitely recommend him to others.
Description of Work: He came out to look at a couple of my pine trees because people said they looked bad. Roy came out and diagnosed the problem. One was over watered and the other one was infested with an insect. He pruned 8 of my fruit trees. He did some remedial action on one of my Morello Cherry trees.

I AM STILL IN SHOCK over the way I was treated by Roy Schwartz. I called two weeks ago to get a quote on removing two tall Palms from one of my rental properties. A week later I received a message on my voice mail from Roy Schwartz. He wanted to give me an estimate and needed an address. I called back and received his answering service. I left a message with the address of my property and stated that I would like an estimate. I requested that Roy Schwartz phone me back and left my number once again. I received a call three days later from Roy Schwartz from my property. I explained that since it had taken so long, I had already gotten a couple of other estimates and went with another company. He got irate on the phone and began telling me that I shouldn't have asked him to come out to the property. I tried to explain that I never expected him to got to the property before first talking with him in person and told of the message I left. He kept interrupting me, stating that he was at the property now! He yelled "never call me again!!" and hung up. Now I am a local business owner(24 years in business)and would never treat a customer with so little respect. I warn others to beware of the business. If the owner is capable of such wreckless behavior on the telephone, I wouldn't trust him working on my property. I have been a loyal Angie's List users for a couple of years now. I've found painters, plumbers, carpet cleaning, landscaping, etc. They have all been excellent! This is the first bad experience for me and I will continue to use Angie's List. This bad apple isn't going to spoil all of the wonderful services I've found on this great site!

Our neighbor complained that the roots from our large Torrey pine were causing damage to her driveway. Although Torrey pines are a protected species, we thought we would have to cut the tree down. We got estimates from 3 other tree people. Roy was the only one who suggested that we could save both the tree and the neighbor's driveway. This procedure involved using an air knife (of the 4 people we consulted, he was the only one who had the equipment) and cutting a 4-inch wide trench along the edge of the driveway in order to get at the roots, thereby causing minimal damage to her landscaping. It took a while before we could fix on a mutually agreeable time, but when we did finally fix on a date and time, he and his son showed up promptly. They showed me every step of the way exactly what they were doing and when they finished the job and put all the dirt back, the neighbor couldn't even tell where they had done the work. We will most likely have him trim some trees that the fire department said need to be cut back. This was a most pleasant experience.
Description of Work: Air-knifed along neighbor's driveway, cut tree roots that were causing her driveway to buckle, and installed a bio-barrier to prevent further root growth on the surface.

Mr. Schwartz came about a week after I had called the office, exactly at the appointed time. He clearly understood what I wanted and provided an estimate that was about 30% lower than a previous estimate from a "drive-by" landscaper. Then he reduced his price further for the Angie's list discount! We agreed to do the work the following week, but then he called back in an hour saying he had an unplanned opening and could do the work the next day. He and his son showed up the next morning, exactly as agreed, and did the job. The job was done perfectly, just like I wanted. Clean-up was superb. I had asked him to leave the limb parts for me to chop up into firewood, and he left them all in a nice pile on the edge of the yard, rather than strewn all over like a lot of people would have done. After he had left, I couldn't find anything left for me to do, other than cut up some firewood which I consider to be fun exercise !
Description of Work: Removed a large limb from a eucalyptus that was hanging over my neighbors roof, and a few other limbs to maintain balance. The site is pretty constrained but he cut the limb into pieces and lowered them without damaging anything. He also trimmed a couple of unruly podocarpus trees.

Roy was very knowledgeable when talking about the various trees that needed work. The tricky part of this job is that my neighbors in back wanted the large Tipawanas brought down in height to get their views back, but it's usually not a good idea to do that to the trees. Roy worked with me to make the best of a bad situation. The work he did looked great, very artistic, even though neither of us wanted to bring down the height. Everything was cleaned up perfectly. Except for the beautiful trees, you would never have known he was there.

Mr. Schwartz came out one day to give us the estimate and returned a few days later to do the work. He arrived each time at the appointed time, went right to work with a helper, and put in about 12 hours of very hard work. They knew what they were doing and did an excellent job. Mr. Schwartz has his own large equipment (cherry picker attached to a large truck) and cleaned up all the debris and hauled it away. He is truly an expert with trees and the job of straitening was accomplished by drilling a hole in the trunk, inserting an aluminum screw, then attaching the screw to a line. This job required finesse and knowledge as it must be done in an exacting method so as not to harm the trees. Well worth the price to get a job done just right!! Thank You.

Roy and his two man crew (one being his son) arrived Monday morning as agreed and we briefly confirmed the work to be done. Roy positioned his equipment (a bucket lift affixed to his truck) and got straight to it. It quickly became clear he would need to reposition his equipment as he encountered difficulties maneuvering near power lines. Once he repositioned, it was amazing how fast the job went. Roy s experienced showed as he orchestrated the falling of that big-old cottonwood tree with safety and precision. As all was going so well, something had to happen right? Yes. One of my neighbors seemed to be overly annoyed with the noise created by this all and found it prudent to complain to the police. Two police units arrived and stopped Roy from working having him descend from high-up in that tree. The one officer asked him if there was some municipal code prohibiting such work on Labor Day. This was the cop asking him if you can believe that! Well, the cops left without much more to-do. Roy and I discussed the situation and agreed this was all rather ridicules as the work began well after 8:00 AM and it was then 10:00 AM I said lets crank up again. From that point on there was no further issues in fact, all the neighbors (except one) were out watching the whole process and enjoying it as it was an amazing site to see. In the end, Roy and his crew cleaned-up everything nicely and we had a nice chat. Roy indicated the police situation had been very stressful at a critical point in the falling of the tree something I did not notice as he seemed to handle it very well. He indicated that in 31 years of doing this type of work, never once has the cops showed-up on a complaint just goes to show, you never know what will happen if you stick with something long enough. I command Roy and his crew for doing a stellar job even in the face of the man. Way to go Roy and Son.
Description of Work: Roy came out to my place on a Friday and evaluated a very large cottonwood tree in my front yard that had been neglected for years by the previous owner of my house. The tree had the appearance that it might not have ever been trimmed as it grossly overhung my house, the neighbors and the street. The roots were also a big concern as they were encroaching on my foundation and already breaking-up the side walk. Roy advised my on what to expect if I kept the tree and tried to maintain it and do some root mitigation. I decided to go ahead and have it removed the following Monday.

Roy and his helper arrived on time and went right to work. They worked quickly and efficiently and hauled away all of the debris. Roy does all of the cutting himself and is well equipped. For example, he arrived with a large supply of cutting tools in a 55 foot aerial truck with a wood chipper in tow.
Description of Work: Roy is a trained arborist and had lots of good advice for various problems we had been having with trees and shrubs on our property. For example, we have a tangerine and a lemon tree but neither has yielded fruit in the last several years despite fertilizing and watering. He said a couple nearby bushes were too close for the fruit trees to yield fruit and recommended removal. We asked him to trim a large carrot wood tree but he recommended against it as he felt doing so would permanently damage the tree as it was cut too aggressively by someone else last year.

Roy arrived punctually a little before 8:00 AM and started to work trimming the Jacarandas, shortly his co-worker arrived and he completed the Jacarandas doing a very good job. His employee carried the discarded limbs away and cleaned the entire area. Roy proceeded to remove the designated tree and roots and was very careful to avoid chipping the concrete porch. He finished cutting back the Japanese Maple and they cleaned up all branches and debris from the trees and roots. He did his work expertly and was very easy to communicate with.
Description of Work: Roy Schwartz, arborist, gave me a written estimate and laced three mature Jacarandas, one Japanese Maple and removed a 14 foot Schflera type tree whose roots were beginning to crack the cement porch, he also removed the roots of this tree. He also checked the front porch for root fractures and dug along the cement to check for any roots from the Maple. He also made sure the Maple and Jacarandas were cut back away from the roof. He did excellent work. He did the cutting himself and had assistance with the grinding and cleaning up under the trees.

After initial contact, a date/time for estimate was set. Receptionist left message to reset time. Mr. Schwartz arrived an hour before the set time, and I was not at home to speak with him. He left estimate. I called to set appt. to have the work done. He was not there. He called back once and left message on my answering machine. After repeated attempts to reach Mr. Schwartz, I left my cell number. He never again returned any of my calls. I called a month later to try one more time, and warned that I would file a negative report to Angie's List. Again was assured Mr. Schwartz would return my call. No call. I give up.

Roy did a beautiful job of trimming the pepper trees. He retained their natural shape and, by removing all the dead wood and excess growth, revealed their attractive trunk and branch structure. He really knows his work and performs it with artistry. Plus he was willing to handle additional work as it came up (like the brush pile). Besides all that, he was easy to work with.

Terrific. It was a lot of work completed within one morning. Roy was early and started early. The debris totally filled his truck and there wasn't one scrap on the site when he left. Trimming the pine tree to the f.d.'s specifications was extra work and not included in the quoted price, but he gave us that work for free as part of the Angie's List discount--which I hadn't anticipated. Thanks, Roy! He also gave us advice about our trees and is coming back in January to reshape a pine tree.

Excellent, excellent job. We couldn't be more pleased. Roy and his crew were punctual, polite, thorough and communicative. Roy's crew arrived early on the first day. Roy was right on time with a large aerial lift to begin work on the pine. They worked diligently removing the branches and junipers. At the end of day 1, they cleaned up the yard. Day 2 consisted of grinding the stumps. We are starting over in the yard and intended on ripping everything out - much of it ourselves. We discussed this with Roy. During the job, they also graciously took out some smaller plants (rose bushes, small juniper, lily) for which he did not charge. After the stump of the pine was ground, Roy discussed with us grinding the roots which were all over the front yard. (He knew we wanted to install grass.) Roy advised grinding out the remaining roots since the grass would have problems in the long run if we tried to sod over them. We took his advice on that as well. They left yard clean! GREAT!!
Description of Work: Roy came out and gave an estimate to remove a variety of trees & shrubs including a 35-40 ft. Monterey pine. He gave an itemized estimate for all plants we wanted removed even though we would only be going forward with a portion. After we decided to hire him, he was available to perform the work within the week. Roy and his crew removed the Monterey pine, 3 banks of junipers, 3 twisted juniper trees including grinding the stumps. In addition, they cut down a dead acacia tree.
