Description of Work: I had a grandfather clock over 100 years old that needed the second hand repaired. They had to make a new part to repair the loose second hand. Was repaired and returned and now runs perfectly.

During my initial visit, The Clock Shop impressed upon me that they would be capable of repairing the clock. What happened next is something that is not the norm in this industry. They forced me to pay a $200 deposit before any work was done, which I did. I did it because I wanted to do this based on the strict sentimentality of the item. I was instructed to wait to hear from him and the first time that I heard from him was June 26th. On June 27th I picked up the clock and paid the remaining balance. I was given no itemization of the work that was done. The shop owner who assured me of the repair was not present when I picked it up. I not only did not know what they did to fix the clock, but I was given no instruction of the maintenance of this clock of what I could do as an owner. The only instruction that was given to me was they told me I should see them in three years for maintenance. I connected with them three different time and spoke to the owner. The owner went over a few troubleshooting process of elimination to find out why the clock stopped ticking. I followed what he said and he instructed for me to call back if it happened again, which I did. He further went on and asked me further troubleshooting questions, which I answered. On the third call, I called to tell him that the clock would stop ticking despite his instruction with the troubleshooting protocol. This last call was never returned because I had to leave a message. I received a follow up call after I already filled a complaint with the BBB. I asked for a refund and he refused. He wanted me to return the clock to him for him to have the opportunity to fix it. To me, I have no confidence in this company, so I do not know why I would bring it back. After finding out from another clock repair company, they stated that they did not do any work to fix it. This also makes me feel no confidence in this company. The other company also indicated to me that I was over charged for the repair. I became very upset over the phone when talking to him about a refund and that there was no refund policy that was discussed. This lead to us arguing over the phone.
Description of Work: They were going to assemble and repair a mechanical wall clock.

Response from THE CLOCK SHOP
Dear Mr.[removed member name], 7-20-14 First I’d like to include a copy of my response to your BBB complaint: Dear Mr. [removed member name], Last Saturday, July 12 I received your complaint via the BBB. I immediately gave you a phone call to see if I could resolve your complaint. You will recall that we made little progress toward resolving the issue. I asked you to return the clock to my shop so I could address your concerns. I apologized for not returning your phone call from over the 4th of July weekend. I informed you that the only way I could find out what the problem was with your clock was for you to bring the clock back in to the shop. At that time, you demanded a refund from our shop. I declined your request and again asked you to return your clock to the shop for necessary adjustments. At the conclusion of our conversation, you agreed to bring the clock back to the shop. You made it clear to me that you were very unsatisfied, that you were very angry that I did not return your phone call and that the trip you had to make from Stockton was a burden. I tried to sympathize with your situation which was unfortunately misconstrued as condescension. That was not my intent. Last Tuesday, the 15th I left a message on your answering machine asking you to give us a call before you brought in your clock as you were coming from a distance. I explained that I am often out on grandfather clock house calls and would appreciate a heads up before you came so I could be there personally to address your concerns. I have not heard from you since that call. I am more than willing to address your clock, to get it running the way it should. I can only do so if given the opportunity. My best, Michael Laudi I would like to address your concerns point by point: 1) “ During my initial visit, The Clock Shop impressed upon me that they would be capable of repairing the clock. What happened next is something that is not the norm in this industry. They forced me to pay a $200 deposit before any work was done, which I did.” Yes, we did require a deposit on the repair of your clock. The clock was presented to us totally disassembled. Both Mr. Jennings and I inspected the box of clock parts to conclude that all the critical parts were there so we could complete the work. I informed you that the repair price was very close to the value of the clock. You stated that the clock had extreme sentimental value and that you wished to get the clock repaired. 2) “I was given no itemization of the work that was done.” “ I not only did not know what they did to fix the clock, but I was given no instruction of the maintenance of this clock of what I could do as an owner.” True on the first point. I have no problem supplying that information. We could have addressed the questions at time of pick up had they been asked. (Customers are instructed how to set up their clock at time of pick up.) I can only take your word for it that no instruction was given. Mr. Jennings who helped you at the time of pickup can not specifically remember instructing you. However, he believes he did as that is our protocol. 3) “I connected with them three different time and spoke to the owner. I received a follow up call after I already filled a complaint with the BBB.” True. We did speak on the phone and I attempted to trouble shoot over the phone. It makes sense to attempt what we refer to as an “air traffic control” fix as sometimes that is all it takes and it saves the time and inconvenience of bringing the clock back to the shop. Unfortunately, I need to see the clock to address any problems. Lastly, user error is a possibility. To address the issue we have to work together. I’m assuming the ultimate goal is to get your clock running properly. That is my goal. 4) “I asked for a refund and he refused. He wanted me to return the clock to him for him to have the opportunity to fix it.” True. I sometimes do give refunds if there is a clock we can not repair. Your clock does not qualify until we’ve been given a reasonable opportunity to make it right. I hope you recall that at the time you brought the clock to us that I told you that if we got into the repair and reassembly of your clock and found we could not complete the repair that we would return your clock at no charge (including the $200 good faith down payment). The repair was successfully completed and ran at the shop for testing purposes for over two weeks. 5) “To me, I have no confidence in this company, so I do not know why I would bring it back. After finding out from another clock repair company, they stated that they did not do any work to fix it. This also makes me feel no confidence in this company. The other company also indicated to me that I was over charged for the repair. “ I need a clarification on this statement. Did the other clock repair person say that we did not do any work on the clock or did they say they didn’t they wouldn’t do any work on the clock? If it’s the former, the person you consulted is wrong. If it’s the latter would not be any of my business. Overcharged? Please explain. I gave an estimated based on the amount to time and skill necessary to complete the job. You gave the OK. Lastly, I’ve been repairing clocks for over 40 years. In the repair business, my reputation is my best advertising. I can only offer to readdress the repair of your clock. “Comebacks”, what we refer to as clocks that need attention after the initial repair are an industry fact of life. If you think you’ve been mistreated, please explain. If I haven’t answered any of your questions, please ask. I always sign, “my best” at the end of a correspondence, so… My best, Michael Laudi

Technician evaluated clock in home. After working on it for an hour or so, he had the clock running, but recommended a complete overhaul. Since the clock had not been cleaned in over 20 years we went with the cleaning and overhaul. He removed the clock movement and took it to his shop and returned it 2 months later in perfect working condition. The overhaul cost nearly as much as the clock did originally, but I think it was well worth it. Will definitely use again for clock maintenenance.

Dear [member name removed] I recently received my first negative review on Angie’s list. It made me go back and look at my previous reviews. That said, as I was going to address my bad review, I thought I’d go back and thank my good reviewers first. So, Thanks for the good review! I hope your clock is still giving you good service. We brought the clock from Los Angeles to Sacramento on the back of a pickup truck. It was a gift from a relative. It had not been used for some time. We are very happy with The Clock Shop. The clock works great!

After two moves in six months our grandfather clock was not working. I called The Clock Shop the morning of June 20 to arrange for a house call. I was informed that Mike was on another house call, and someone would return my call shortly. Mike called within half an hour, and he was at our house within an hour. Mike immediately discovered the broken part, replaced it, and started the clock. As of today, June 25, the clock is keeping perfect time. We were very impressed with everything.

Description of Work: When our 28 year old Grandfather clock began having issues with chiming the incorrect hour, I searched for an in home service provider. Another local company quoted me $200, just to come to my home. The Clock Shop scheduled an in-home appointment at my convenience, arrived in a timely manner and provided very professional service which resolved my issue for $125. He was pleasant, professional and very informative about the future care and maintenance of my clock, without suggesting unneeded services. I feel a level of confidence that this service provider is professional and trustworthy. I will be taking another clock I own to him for repair in the near future. I appreciate his excellent service!

It was a very satisfying experience and made life for me, being a senior citizen living alone, much easier. Finding experienced and trustworthy people to fix what I need to be repaired is not always as easy as was getting my clock fixed.. The repair was done at 2630 Fulton Ave., Sacramento, Ca.
Description of Work: My Black Forest Cuckoo clock quit running & I called the first clock repair shop on your list in the city I live in and they evidently have gone out of business so I called the second place on your list even though it was approx. 14 miles from my home. He told me to bring the clock in and he would see if the clock was worth repairing. He looked at the inside and said he could repair it and it would cost $62.00 to repair and install two small pins at each side of the back on the bottom which served as an anchor when pushed against the wall where it hung thus making in much easier to keep it level when winding. This was a great benefit for me as if the clock does not stay level it will not run continuously. He fixed it and hung it up for approx. one and half weeks in his shop to make sure it kept good time etc. Overall, it was a much better experience getting the clock fixed than I would have expected and I would recommend his repair shop to anyone and will return in a year or so to have him clean and lubricate it in the future. I also feel that the cost was very reasonable for what he did. The clock is 3 years old and I had no idea when I purchased it that it was really a delicate clock to get wound up every four days especially without those two pins he installed to fix the problem of the clock moving when pulling on the two chains to keep it running. I really felt it was a blessing that I ended up taking the clock to The Clock Shop as he seems to know what he is doing. Thank you for putting his repair shot on your list.

Our 28-year old wall clock stopped working. I took it in on a Friday afternoon. The gentleman who attended me recommended a new mechanism for the clock and said that if I could wait ten minutes he would fix it for me. He also told me how much it would cost. In 10 minutes he had returned to me a working clock and my old battery that I had just replaced! The clock is back on the wall and keeping excellent time.
Description of Work: He removed an old non-working mechanism in our wall clock and installed a new mechanism and pendulum.
