I felt it went very well. See above for more explanation.
Description of Work: My initial call was to clear a plugged toilet which the serviceman did. In addition, he took care of a number of plumbing problems that I had been putting off getting taken care of. Specifically, my kitchen drain was partially plugged so when I ran the disposal stuff usually back up into the other sink. It would clear, of course, but it still wasn't nice. He cleared the drain--problem solved. Also I was having variable (mostly low) water pressure on hot water valves. He cleared the hot water input line on my washer and checked my water heater for sediment. I was very pleased with all of it. I particularly liked that this company charged by time spent (in quarter hours segments) rather than by job which made it easy to get his help on a number of smaller type issues.

Prior to having a new washer and dryer installed in my mother's home, I needed to have one of the washing machine supply line valves replaced. Usually this would be a rather straight forward process but the home is around forty-five years old and I knew that might create a problem. Friends of mine had recommended Angies List in the past, and until now, I did not believe I needed their service. So I called Angie's List and became a member over the phone. I then looked up plumbers in our area and based on very high marks and positive recommendations, I chose Armstrong Plumbing. Fortunately, I made the right decision to have a professional on hand with the right equipment should something go wrong because it did. A gentleman by the name of Frank provided the service. On time, professional, knowledgeable, and very friendly. We could not have been more pleased. Frank introduced himself and went right to work. While working, he answered all questions, and explained what he was doing so we could understand. I decided to have both valves replaced as they were both aged. After installing the valves, Frank checked his work and discovered that a pipe joint had broken due to the torqueing on the valves. This is the reason I decided to hire someone. He shut the water off and made the necessary repairs. The price we payed was rather close to what the original estimate was minus all the additional work! This was very fair considering he was on site for over an hour. Thanks to Angies List and their members for useful comments and Frank at Armstrong Plumbing. I would definetly recommend Armstrong Plumbing to family and friends.

For nearly two years I've been fighting with a temperamental water heater. For days (and sometimes weeks) at a time, the pilot light would go out once the tank was heated, and I would have to relight it. [Of course, it would periodically stop all that foolish behavior entirely and work properly for fairly long stretches, which is why it took me so long to finally give in (after it had been acting up for its longest stretch yet) and seek a real solution!] Naturally, once I realized it really was time to just give in and call in a professional, I consulted Angie's List: Armstrong Plumbing is the company that caught my eye. I called late one afternoon, and a service man was out very early the next morning. [He did call about 20 mins. ahead to say he was stuck in traffic and would be late, but he ended up not being more than about 5 minutes late.] He fixed the problem in very short order (well under an hour). He also vacummed out all the "fuzz" (from places I didn't even realize it was accumulating) and he gave me a good tip about where I could purchase a particular vacuum attachment designed to make that job easier for me going forward. Money well spent! So, even now, after nearly a month, I still find myself sending up a quick blessing to Armstrong Plumbing (and Angie's List!) everytime I turn on a faucet and get the hot water I was expecting! Thanks to you both!

This was a very positive experience for me. I didn't have a clue about who to call and everyone had been telling me about Angie's List. I joined and picked Armstrong Plumbing because of their positive reviews. The appt was scheduled for one day after my call. My plumber was George. He was a pleasure to have here. I could tell he was very experienced and immediately knew what needed to be done. He was friendly, professional and explained what needed to be done and got right to work and fixed the problem. I will tell anyone who asks if I know a good plumber who is fair and has good technicians to go to Armstrong Plumbing. I would also tell them to ask the company to send George. He is the best. It was great. He didn't believe me at first that there was something wrong with the toilet but once he figured it out I think he gave us a break on what he did because it took him longer. A clogged sewer line caused our toilets and shower to back up... on Saturday evening after normal business hours... We had to leave a message for Armstrong plumbing because nobody was available, but we got a call back right away from a woman who said she would have the on-call plumber call us to discuss our situation. He called us right away. His name was Peter. He said he would be at our house in about 45 minutes after he explained that the 1st half-hour would be $135 and each hour thereafter (in 1/4-hour increments) would be an additional $135. I told him I found him on Angie's list as a highly-rated service provider and he said I'd get a 10% discount. (I did!) Peter arrived on time and within a few minutes had his machine hooked up and had cleared our blockage. There was quite a mess around the clean-out which he cleaned up nicely. I was very happy that I only got charged $121 ($135 for 1/2 hours work less 10% discount) for a very fast and professional job.

I was given a 2-hr window the service technician would arrive on the same day I had requested service. The technician, George, called an hour earlier than the 2-hr window given and asked if it was convenient for him to do the work earlier. He gave an estimated time of arrival and arrived promptly. He replaced the hot water valve and showed me the old one being replaced and explained why it was leaking. It took George about 15 minutes to replace the valve. I'm very pleased with the fast, courteous service given.

i had a new (to me) house that came with a leaking shower faucet and luke warm water. Jacob showed me the nuts and bolts of what was wrong, and laid out 3 scenarios ranging in price/complexity, allowing me to try the easiest first, see how well it works, with ideas of what i could do next if not happy. I very much appreciated his description of the tradeoffs of all options, giving me the decision to choose. So far my choice is working out well, but i will definitely call them again if ever i need more plumbing work.

I don't want to be unreasonable or too harsh, but I do want to take the time to log my experience as honestly as I can. Only an evaluation was performed. I can't even say estimate since I never received one. To begin with, I made a call to this company in the afternoon and was advised there was no one available to schedule an estimate and discuss the details of a tankless water heater. The phone agent was professional and courteous. I offered to call back and asked how late I could call. I was told they were open until 6:00. I called back at 5:00 and was advised there was no estimator to schedule an appointment or to talk to about a tankless water heater, but that he (this phone agent) would be willing to share his knowledge, which was considerable. We sheduled an appointment for an estimator to meet me at the house on Friday. I had a schedule change at work, and called to ask to change the appointment to Monday or Tuesday the next week, and that was arranged. I then got a call later in the day asking me to call back, to resolve the schedule change, which I had been lead to believe was finalized. I called back and confirmed appointment. The day of the appointment (think it was Tuesday) I received a call on my cell to ask if the appointment could be moved up in the day. I was able to pull things together at work and met the estimator an hour earlier than planned. No real problem with that. We disussed the removal of a tank water heater from a closet in the house that he stated could have the outer shell cut in order to remove without tearing apart the door jam of the closet, and also the installation of an outside Tankless heater. All seemed to go well, except that he didn't have any materials to give me a price quote, so I agreed to one receive an email that he was to have to me the next day. I wrote down my email and he read it back to me. It is now Sunday, nearly a week later, and I have heard nothing - not even phone call... None of this is that horrilble, but the general experience has put a bad taste in my mouth. It seems they are not interested in the job.I will not be using the services of this company.

Dear Member. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns on Angies List. Feed back of this nature only helps us to fine tune our well oiled machine (or at times semi oiled as in your case.) The scheduling situation doesn't seem to have been the concern as much as the apparent lack of response. We actually accommodated your request but wanted to come a little earlier than later at which you seemed ok with at the time. Unfortunately, we dropped the ball on the follow up. Obviously, you never received your estimate and we would have known that had we checked with you the following day. At times, when we are terribly busy, we are unable to follow up with every single customer we send estimates to and we just assume that perhaps they were not happy with the quote and went elsewhere. This was unfortunately the case with you. Please accept our sincerest apologies and if you'd like to see the quote that never made it to you we'd be happy to send it along. Best of luck to you.

I got them through Angie’s List. They were a good group. All of the plumbing that they did for me was $1800. It was a major job to install the sump pumps. They were great and very professional. They gave me an estimate and that’s what it cost. It didn’t cost anything more than what they had estimated. They went out of their way to do the work like I wanted and even better. They had good ideas for how to hook things up. I was very pleased with their work. They did quality work. Everything they did was up to code and well appreciated. I would definitely use their services in the future too.

The toilet in our rental home clogged up and I was out of town and had to make arrangements long distance with my son being the local contact person. They were courteous and helpful over the phone, and were able to get a person to come over right away. The clog ended up being in the sewer line toward the back fence of the property. Everything was fixed within 45 minutes, and we were very pleased with the whole experience.

My bathtub had 5 inches of water in it and nothing I did would make it drain. Based on Angie's list I called this company and George came out the next day. In the first three minutes I learned the entire plumbing layout of my concrete slab house. ;) George, an older gentleman, has probably fixed several thousand houses like mine and he didn't mind explaining things as he worked. I learned a lot. He first removed the low flow inhibitor from the kitchen sink and turned that water on full blast to judge some relationship between bathroom and kitchen flow. Then he cleaned the filters on those faucets and then snaked the bathtub drain. It worked wonderfully after that, but he wasn't satisfied. He made some adjustments to the stopper (that up and down lever that allows you to fill up or drain the tub) cause he said it was probably installed incorrectly and didn't rise high enough to let the water flow out as it should. The water then drained even more wonderfully. I was expecting to need jack hammers and new pipes and a million dollar bill, instead because of George's great knowledge and experience he was in and out within a half hour and it only cost me $90. I think George is a happy guy who enjoys his work. I liked him. If the other workers at Armstrong Plumbing are half as good as George this is one great company.

I thought about going to an equipment rental, but wasn't sure where the problem was (4" exterior or 2" interior drains). Minimum rental for a 4" drain snake was $50 - $60 from Abba Dabba. I called Armstrong based on the "A" score on Angie's List. They gave me a phone estimate to clean my drain of $90 to $135. Mark was at my house within the hour, troubleshot the problem and cleaned the drain. He put a little extra effort into it because he said there was a stretch of drain that was "tough". After he was through, he cleaned the area where he was working (my front porch). He was pleasant and professional, and I learned a few things about my house's drain system. When it was done, he gave me a 10% discount for using Angie's List, and the total bill was only $81, and from phone call to Mark pulling out of my driveway was less than 90 minutes. I would definitely use them again. If I'd used the equipment rental, I would have rented the wrong snake, and I'd probably STILL be standing in line. The extra money spent was well worth it. A-plus!
Description of Work: Muck backed up into my bathroom tub and utility basin. Tried to clear the muck using a plumber's helper, but no use. Waste water was not draining at all. Armstrong came to my home and cleared the drain.

Update - 6/26/2011 Armstrong Plumbing submitted a fair response to this review. Not only that, they also refunded a check in the amount of $101, and sent a bonus $10 Starbucks card. To their credit, this is something they did not have to do, which demonstrated terrific customer service to make up for any drawback. Consequently, Armstrong Plumbing honored their original bid. All of this follow-on effort was very much appreciated and is reflected in this upgraded rating. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We received an original estimate of $409. I asked about the Angie's List discount which was advertised, and Milton agreed to honor it at 10%. We then decided on the date and time to do the work. Milton was punctual, but after slightly less than an hour of cutting, which created plenty of dust (nothing was covered), he indicated that he had made a mistake ("brain fart" he later called it): he had provided an estimate for a different kind of pipe/part replacement. Instead of an "orange pex" which was on his estimate, it was a "Kitec pex." (They were both plastic and orange, so I asked about the differences between the two but did not get a clear answer.) Consequently, he said that he'd have to go and get the appropriate pipe and it would "cost a little more," though he would not charge us for the additional drive to go get it. He came back about an hour later with the right pipe, and by then, my wife and I had to deal with a school event for our kids and work. As a result, we had to leave him alone in our home --- not what we had planned, but we had no choice. Great reviews on Angie's List and security features in our home left us slightly less anxious. When we received the final invoice, it was $510 which was $101 more than originally spec'd. He explained that he had to rent a specific "crimper tool" to work with the new pipe, so he had to factor that in. With the 10% discount from Angie's List, the total bill came to $474, significantly more than the $368 (including discount) it would have cost had he kept to his original estimate. In addition, I asked to see the old pipe, which he had taken to his truck and intended to keep. While I was examining it and inquiring about the charge breakdown, he excused himself to take a call. After 10 minutes of fielding that complaint, I requested to keep the old pipe. Following some consideration, he agreed to leave it with me. After he left and I inspected his work closer, I realized there was little subsequent clean-up performed. This ties in with the lack of preparation before the work (no effort to cover for dust). Milton was a pleasant individual. Had he stuck with his initial word/estimate, we would have overlooked any other negative and rated him an A. However, a last-minute 20%-25% cost increase in this economy is not only difficult and unfair, but simply a bad business practice. Because of this, we cannot grade him higher than D.
Description of Work: We had water that was wetting our carpet above the slab, and so we joined Angie's List and contacted a few plumbers. I left voicemails at some contractors, and out of those that responded, the soonest anyone could come out was the following day. Armstrong Plumbing answered the phone and was able to come out later that day, which was very convenient for us. Although Milton (the owner) was 45 minutes late, he at least called ahead of time. After investigating and finding the source of the leak by punching through walls, Milton obtained the materials and fixed the leak within 2 days.

Response from Armstrong Plumbing
Dear Customer, We'd like to first apologize for your less than satisfactory experience with us. I am also an owner and spoke with Milton in detail about your service project. We attempt to give our customers a 1-2 hour window for arrival and on your particular call Milton gave you a 1 hour window. Unfortunately he did have a complication with the call ahead of yours causing his delay. We try our best to always be on time but with such small windows of time which our customers appreciate, it does have its draw backs from time to time. After assessing your problem which was a leak requiring not only plumbing but additional clean up to your carpets and walls, MIlton determined you would need a repair of "pex" piping. He admitted to his error regarding the different pipes and embarrassingly stated that he "know's better." After returning with the correct pipe and a tool which we had to rent (this is not a common brand of pex requiring their own specialized tool) he was able to fix your leak. The reason MIlton had not prepped and cleaned to our normal specifications was that your carpet was pulled back due to the water damage and he was working over concrete. There was talk of your insurance company being involved. Milton assumed that you would be having a clean up/restoration company out to clean the pulled back carpet area and visible mold in the walls which he pointed out to you. When Milton finished your repair he took the old pipe with him as a teaching aid for our other technicians. Your housing development has apparently all been built with this type of "pex" and he wanted to show and demonstrate to our other technicians the proper way to repair it should they happen to encounter it in the future. This is why he was reluctant to leave it behind. In conclusion, Milton's embarrassing senior moment( or whatever one will call it) and assumption of someone coming behind him to clean was a moment of bad judgement that was completely out of the norm for us. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused. After further consideration, Milton has realized that had he properly identified the pipe his quote would have been adjusted to include the rental and price for the correct pipe. Having miss-diagnosed your pipe should be our problem not yours. Thank you for bringing it to our attention and you can expect a refund for the difference between what he charged and the discounted original bid. We wish you a speedy clean-up with your extensive leak challenge and hope you will give us the opportunity to be of service in the future.

Mark was professional and efficient and although friendly did not prolong the time I was paying for with idle conversation. My first experience with Armstrong Plumbing has been a good one. I would use them again and will certainly recommend them.
Description of Work: Mark was here on time and did a very thorough job. He fixed a dripping shower head using the parts I had already bought. He also worked to find out what was causing the smell under my kitchen sink. It took awhile to discover the problem but he continued until solved. He looked at drains and pipes under the sink and even checked the outside clean out. Turned out it was due to the fact that I had not been using my dishwasher and some food from the garbage disposal had settled in the drain/pipe. He ran the dishwasher and hurried it through the cycles in order to be sure it was fixed. In the process he noticed another small drip and fixed it as well.

Tuesday night, after 6PM, I discovered water under my kitchen sink cabinet. (The house is 60 years old and has the original kitchen sink and strainers.) The sink strainer on one side of the double sink was disintegrating.) Basically some water drained to the pipes and some drained to the cabinet floor. I called and reached their service about 8PM. Peter called me back within 15 minutes. ( I wanted to schedule it for after noon the following day. I received a wake up call from Frank the next morning, and later scheduled with Matt ("who does the scheduling") for between noon and 2PM. I emailed photos of what I saw to Matt. Peter arrived within the time frame. He looked it over, showed me what he had to replace it with. He gave me an estimate for one and another for both sink strainers when I asked. I decided that I wanted both to look and work. (I had to use dish tubs to keep water in the sinks.) Peter had only one strainer with him, so he had to get another. I asked him where he was going and suggested another place closer. (Many male contractors do not take kindly to a question or suggestion from a woman.) Peter was receptive. (This is very important to me.) He remembered something closer on his way, but he listened to me. He got two new beautiful stainless steel working sink strainers for me. And I AM A HAPPY CAMPER.
Description of Work: I first used Armstrong a year ago and was very satisfied with them and wrote a review then. Peter examined the sink strainer and gave me an estimate to replace the one. I asked him about replacing the strainer on the other side as well so they looked the same, and worked. He had to get a second strainer and went locally. He replaced both, tested them, cleaned up afterwards. He asked if I wanted him to put the things back in the cabinet. I declined.
