"Vehicle was brought into shop with complaint of overheating in mountains and no other service history (no previous repair at our shop). During our test and inspection, we noted that the thermostat was sticking AND that there were 75 PPM (parts per million) hydrocarbons in cooling system which generally is consistent with a blown (or seeping) head gasket. While it is possible that replacing the thermostat would relieve the "sticking thermostat issue" it is out of the "norm" for a radiator to be plugged at 68,000 miles unless stop leak or other additive was introduced into the system. It is our policy to notify the customer of potiential additional cost if there is evidence or concern found during the diagnosis. In fairness, we made no attempt to resolve the oeverheat as the customer elected to pick the vehicle up and we have no idea if the vehicle had additional heating issues further down the road, or if there are problems still to come. It should also be noted that the customer never returned so we could offer a resolve to the issue or explain our findings as they relate to the repairs made at another shop. We have an A+ rating with the BBB and the BAR because we take care of our customers and stand behind our work. We offer warranties on all repairs and stand behind our work and diagnosis, hoever, an estimate is just that.... an estimate until we get into the actual repair there are unknowns."
